Miscellaneous Thoughts and Advice for Ride Managers

Base camp – these days rigs are getting bigger and bigger.  If your camp location may be difficult for a big rig to get in or out of (tight corners, elevation changes, not level, soft ground), make a note of this in your ride information.

Meals – If you are not up to doing meals yourself, check with local scouting groups or church groups.  Scouts may be interested in activities, and church groups may be interested in using the event as fund raising.

Measuring distances on your trails – there are several different techniques for doing this.  Unfortunately, using modern GPS units is not one of them.  I have ridden out on a trail using one of these units, then turned around and ridden the exact same trail and distance back.  The difference between the two measurements was 10%.  On a 25 mile ride, that’s 2.5 miles extra or short.  These units will routinely have at least a 10% margin of error, depending on terrain and environment.
