Committee on Academic Freedom and Rights Annual Report 1999-2000 The Committee on Academic Freedom and Rights met twenty-five times during the 1999-2000 academic year. Four faculty and one staff person sought the assistance of the committee. In three of these cases, a satisfactory resolution was reached without any inquiry. An informal inquiry was conducted in one of the other cases; that inquiry was concluded late in the spring, and the case may or may not proceed to the formal stage, at the discretion of the complainant. The other faculty complaint occurred too late in the year for the committee to commence an informal inquiry; an amicable resolution was attempted, and the case may or may not come back to the committee at some future time. In addition, the Committee met once with the Dean of Faculty to discuss implementation of policy regarding Chairs' annual letters of evaluation. The committee also deliberated changes in the Faculty Handbook language relating to reappointment procedures for various classes of non-faculty instructional staff, and made recommendations in that regard to the Dean and the Committee on Faculty Governance.
