Curriculum Committee met a total of 22 times during the
academic year 1998-99. A brief summary of the committee's actions follows.
- 25 new courses were approved in various disciplines.
- 24 courses were approved as LS 2 courses. Of these, 9 were conversions
from "old LS" to new LS 2. One course was deleted from LS 2 and moved
back to a discipline.
- 65 courses were revised in some way. Of these revisions, 4 fulfilled
Arts B, 2 Society B, I Writing-Intensive, I NW, I Nature B, and 25
HF.
- 24 courses were deleted from the Catalogue.
- The review of Interdepartmental Majors, requested by the Dean and
approved by last year's CC, was put on hold until after departmental
reconfigurations.
- The Dean of the Faculty charged CC with gearing up for reconfiguration,
assessment, and curricular change. The CC responded formally to the
Dean's response. One practical change CC made was to expedite handling
of routine matters by a designated subcommittee rather than the whole.
- CC carried out a self-assessment and submitted the resultant report
to CFG.
- CC apporoved a new Education Studies Major.
- CC deleted the Coaching Minor and the PE-Business major.
- CC approved requested changes in the requirements for the following
majors, minors, concentrations, and programs: English-Philosophy major,
International Affairs minor, Business major, Business minor, all Interdisciplinary
majors with Business, Environmental Studies program, and the Law and
Society minor.
- CC approved changing the name of the Business Dept. to the Department
of Management and Business.
- CC approved the demise of the Liberal Studies Committee and the
subsequent addition of the Director of Liberal Studies to the CC as
a voting member, and the Faculty approved.
- CC devised new forms and the Registrar posted them on the Web. The
forms were redesigned to elicit data CC will need to approve courses
and revisions within the context of the College's current initiatives.
- CC's Self-Determined Majors Subcommittee reports that 4 self-detem-lined
majors graduated, two students from the class of '98 were retroactively
awarded departmental honors, accepted 4 new SDM proposals, denied
one, and is currently reviewing 7 new ones. The subcommittee is comprised
of Steven Frey (Chair), Phil Boshoff, Lynne Gelber, James Kennelly,
and Jon Ramsey. Steve Frey will chair again in '99-'00.
I would like to thank all of the members of Curriculum Committee
for being so helpful and dedicated throughout an exceptionally busy and
confusing year. Ann Henderson deserves and receives special thanks for,
inter alia, maintaining and posting forms and revisions on the
committee's web page. The committee's operating code, guidelines for all
requirements, and forms can be found on our web page.
