Major and Minor Requirements

Students who wish to earn a degree in chemistry may choose to major in chemistry or in chemistry with biochemistry concentration.

Certification of the degree by the American Chemical Society is also available. Please consult with your advisor or the Chair for more information.

A minor in chemistry is available for students who wish to supplement a degree in another field with a concentration in chemistry.


The Chemistry Major

The major consists of the following elements

Foundation courses in chemistry
105 or 105H or 107H
106 or 106H or 207H
221
222
Supporting courses in physics and mathematics
Advanced courses in chemistry
Chemistry electives
Seminars in chemistry
Capstone research
371 or 372

*-Additional units of CH 371 and CH 372 can be counted as 300-level electives.

Students planning to pursue graduate work should also take MA 202.

Please consult the suggested course sequence for the chemistry major.


The Chemistry Major with Biochemistry Concentration

The major consists of the following elements

Foundation courses in chemistry
105 or 105H or 107H
106 or 106H or 207H

Supporting courses in biology
Three biology courses, BI105, BI106 and one from among BI242, BI243, BI244, BI245, BI246
Supporting courses in physics and mathematics
Advanced courses in chemistry
Chemistry electives
Seminars in chemistry
Capstone research
371 or 372

*-An additional unit of CH 371 and CH 372 can be counted as a 300-level elective.

Minor in Chemistry

The Chemistry minor consists of the following elements

Three 300-level courses excluding 377 and 378. At least one course must have a laboratory component.
