Major and Minor Requirements

Students who wish to earn a degree in chemistry may choose to major in chemistry or in chemistry with biochemistry concentration.

Certification of the degree by the American Chemical Society is also available. Please consult with your advisor or the Chair for more information.

A minor in chemistry is available for students who wish to supplement a degree in another field with a concentration in chemistry.

The Chemistry Major

The major consists of the following elements

Foundation courses in chemistry	105 or 105H or 107H 106 or 106H or 207H 221 222
Supporting courses in physics and mathematics	PY 207 PY 208 MA 111 MA 113
Advanced courses in chemistry	303 332 333
Chemistry electives	two 300-level electives*
Seminars in chemistry	377 378
Capstone research	371 or 372

*-Additional units of CH 371 and CH 372 can be counted as 300-level electives.

Students planning to pursue graduate work should also take MA 202.

The Chemistry Major with Biochemistry Concentration

The major consists of the following elements

Foundation courses in chemistry	105 or 105H or 107H 106 or 106H or 207H 221 222
Supporting courses in biology	Three biology courses, BI105, BI106 and one from among BI242, BI243, BI244, BI245, BI246
Supporting courses in physics and mathematics	PY 207 PY 208 MA 111 MA 113
Advanced courses in chemistry	330 or 332 341 342
Chemistry electives	one 300-level elective*
Seminars in chemistry	377 378
Capstone research	371 or 372

*-An additional unit of CH 371 and CH 372 can be counted as a 300-level elective.

Minor in Chemistry

The Chemistry minor consists of the following elements

Foundation courses in chemistry	105 or 105H 106 or 106H 221 222
Advanced courses in chemistry	Three 300-level courses excluding 377 and 378. At least one course must have a laboratory component.
