Welcome to Unit Eight.

This unit introduces the general principles for deriving English words from Greek and Latin verbs. The principles themselves should be familiar from previous units, and will result mainly in verbs.

The following topics are addressed:

• verbs and their roles in most languages,
• how Latin verbs and how Greek verbs work,
• general usage of Greek and Latin verbs in English, and
• the rules under which these verbs enter English.

After exploring Unit 8, students should be able to infer the definitions of English verbs by recognizing the roots from which they are formed. Furthermore, students should be able to generate English verbs by recalling the appropriate Greek and Latin roots and prefixes.
