Artist-In-Residence - Susan Griss ***
2005
2005 marked the third year that the Tang partnered
with Skidmore’s Education and Dance departments to bring dancer/
choreographer/ educator Susan Griss to campus as an artist-in-residence.
Rooted in her background as a dancer and choreographer, Ms. Griss'
successful methods of teaching across the disciplines through creative
movement have been presented to principals, classroom teachers,
teaching artists and pre-service teachers throughout the United
States.
As in past years, portions of the residency focused on using content
from Tang exhibitions to create kinesthetic lessons for the classroom
in order to make the curriculum more tangible, accessible and memorable
for students. These science-focused lessons, based on the exhibition “A Very Liquid Heaven,” were presented to Skidmore Education
students as well as the entire 5th grade of Schulyerville Elementary
School.
In addition to the museum-focused work, Griss held several sessions
with Skidmore students in “Art for Children,” "Modern
Dance 1,” and "Improvisation” classes. She also
held two workshop sessions with Skidmore Education majors, demonstrating
how topics as diverse as punctuation and conflict resolution could
be taught through movement in the classroom.
As in past years, the residency was a success in showing how the
arts can be incorporated into many areas of a curriculum.
