Study Questions for IA 101 Quiz # 2: The Economic and Cultural World

Quiz # 2 is on Monday, April 14

You will have the complete class period to write this quiz. It will be worth 15% of your final grade.

Part I: Identifications. (Each definition is worth 4 points, 20 points total)

Be sure to give dates and examples.

Part II: Short-Answer (each short answer is worth 20 points, 60 points total)

Here are seven study questions.Three (3) of these questions will appear on the quiz and you will be required to answer all three of them.


1. Regional trade organizations have been called helpful for global free trade by some thinkers, while others consider them to hinder a genuinely open international trading system. Why might these organizations be seen as helpful or harmful? Use examples from the readings, discussions, and web resources.

2. In the last 50 years, there has been a rapid transformation of the global economy. What state and non-state forces have caused these rapid changes? Use examples from the readings from both Mingst and O'Meara.

3. Do multinational corporations benefit or harm the global economy? From what perspectives might one oppose the activities of MNCs?

4. How did the Brothers Grimm help to shape German national identity? Use examples from the folk and fairy tales we read and discussed in the course. Be sure to address such issues as editing, the use of informants, and regional biases.

5. Based on your readings of Huntington and Barber, and the Said lecture, do you see a difference between a cultural identity and a civilization? What conditions might make cultures clash? Under what conditions might civilizations form alliances with other civilizations?

6. What was Mr. Johnson’s attitude toward European and African culture? To what extent does Mr. Johnson's cultural and ethnic identity exemplify important aspects of colonialism? Use examples from the film and the roundtable.

7. Based on your readings of the course materials, does the conflict in the film "No Man's Land" represent a clash of civilizations or a conflict of another sort? Support your answer with examples from the readings and the film.

Part III: Mapping Exercise: (Each country identification is worth 4 points, 20 points total)

Students will be asked to identify 5 of 8 African countries on an attached map.
