Programs for Teaching English in JapanJET (Japan Exchange and Teaching Program) Sponsored
by the Japanese Ministry of Education. Participants work as English teachers
in the Japanese school system in a location of the Ministry's choosing.
Tenure is one year, with a possible renewal. Program provides round-trip
airfare and a stipend, and arranges housing. Deadline is early December.
Requirements: BA from accredited university, under 35 yrs. of age. Check

Post-Graduate Language ProgramsInter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies
For college graduates who need additional Japanese language training for
their careers/graduate studies. Financial aid is available. One of the
best if not THE best language programs available. Sponsored by Stanford

Student ConferencesJapan America Student Conference An educational
and cultural exchange program for university students from the U.S. and
Japan. Each year, 40 American students and 40 Japanese students (freshmen
to PhD candidates) spend an intense month of living, studying and travelling
together at various locales in the United States or Japan. Deadline is
usually in February. Participation fee: $1900 (1995). Financial aid available.

Japanese Language Proficiency TestAdminstered by the Japan
Foundation and the Japanese Government. There are four levels, costing
between $30-$50. Application deadline in mid-October. Exam given once
a year in December in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York. For more information,
