Faculty Governance at Skidmore College
Skidmore College is committed to the principle of shared governance.
Shared governance recognizes (1) the unique role that faculty
play in institutions of higher learning by virtue of their special
knowledge, experience, interests, and values, and (2) the relationship
between faculty participation in governance and the protection
of academic freedom.
Welcome to the homepage for Faculty Governance at Skidmore
College. Here you will find links to a wide variety of information,
including committee rosters, committee operating codes, annual
reports & homepage links, the Faculty Handbook, Faculty
Meeting information, the national AAUP's web site, and a link
to the homepage of the Committee on Faculty Governance, which
maintains this site in furtherance of its mission to "foster
the effective functioning of the faculty governance system."
In addition, you will find copies of important documents
in the Archives section. These include the Report of the Task
Force on Faculty Governance, March 14, 1988; the Report of
the Task Force on College Governance, March 6, 1989; and the
CFG Report on Presidential Searches, May 19, 1999.
Faculty governance provides the principal structure through
which faculty members express their views and inform college
policy. Faculty governance is (1) especially concerned with
those subjects for which faculty members have primary responsibilities:
academic freedom, academic standards, educational policy and
curriculum, faculty status, and self governance, (2) also concerned
with those subjects in which faculty members have a major interest
and share responsibilities with other constituencies: financial
policy and planning, and institutional planning.
