ID 201H Fall 2003
Liberal Studies 1 Residence Hall Programming SeriesWorking in teams of 2 or 3, LS 1 tutors conduct a series of evening or weekend programs to enhance the Liberal Studies 1 experience of first-year students and bridge the gap between the co-curricular and academic sides of the campus. Typically held in the residence halls, your programs should provide students with an opportunity to explore further the issues being discussed in LS 1 and/or interact more personally with members of the LS 1 faculty.
Suggestions for programs include showing a video related to the LS 1 dilemmas and leading a follow-up discussion, doing a hands-on art or science activity, or inviting a member of the Skidmore faculty or staff to discuss further issues from an LS 1 unit. There is a great interest in having the LS 1 tutors hold a Frankenstein film series this fall. Please consider doing so. To review the programs the 2002 LS 1 tutors offered, click here. If you need special supplies or equipment for your event or would like to provide refreshments, please let me know first, and then we will make arrangements with the Liberal Studies office and the Office of Residential Life. All programs should be completed by no later than the second week of November.
To assist you in developing your program, I ask that each group write a prospectus describing its Residence Hall event, focusing especially on the relationship between your program, its LS 1 connections, and its relationship to the goals and structure (intellectual and thematic) of LS 1. Your group's paper should be 2-3 pages (typed and double-spaced with normal margins and font). It should include a bibliography listing any of the course readings and lectures to be referred to in the event; be sure to use internal citations for any direct quotes or paraphrasing. As you know, The Skidmore Guide to Writing and the appendices of the 2003 LS 1 reader contain guidelines for citation. Your prospectus is due on Monday, 15 September. If you have any questions about the LS 1 Residence Hall program or your prospectus, please raise them in class or discuss them with me personally in a conference or electronic communication.
