Session Title - Room Number (S = Siena Hall; RB = Roger Bacon Hall)
Welcoming Remarks - Dr. Larry Medsker, Dean of School of Science and Professor of Computer Science
Abstract: A former student of mine always asks undergraduates on the first day of algebra class to name some contributors to the subject and explain their important contributions. That seems like a rather daunting task for the first day of the term, but what if on the last day of class, the same question is posed, only this time an answer is expected? This talk will be preparation for that final exam, as it will feature some famous algebraists and their amazing mathematics. The only prerequisites are some linear algebra and a little abstract algebra.
Biography: Georgia Benkart is a professor of mathematics at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She started her academic career there as a C.C. MacDuffee Instructor right after receiving her Ph.D. in 1974 from Yale University. Since that time she has also worked as a visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Aspen Center for Physics and the University of Virginia.
Professor Benkart has won many prestigious awards for her research and teaching. She was named a Polya Lecturer in 2000 - 2002 by the Mathematical Association of America, she obtained the Romnes Fellowship in 1985, and in 1996 the WARF Mid-Career Faculty Research Award from the University of Wisconsin. In 1987 she was awarded the University of Wisconsin Distinguished Teaching Award. The National Science Foundation has been supporting her research in Lie Algebras, Representation Theory and Combinatorics since 1975. Her work was also supported by the CRDF Cooperative Grants Program in 1996 and the National Science Foundation US-USSR Cooperative Program in 1992.
Since 1976 Professor Benkart has authored or co-authored more than 80 papers in top mathematical journals. This impressive list includes the Annals of Mathematics, Journal of Algebra, Lecture Notes in Mathematics, Inventiones Mathematicae, Transactions of the American Mathematical Society and the American Mathematical Monthly. She gave more then 130 invited lectures at seminars, colloquia, meetings and conferences all over the world (Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, and the US). Professor Benkart has successfully advised fourteen graduate students and is presently working with four more. She is also an editor of three international mathematics journals.
In summary, Professor Benkart is a top world class mathematician in her research area, she is an excellent speaker and an accomplished writer, and she is deeply committed to education at all levels.
