Composition Project
1998

Required
  1. Materials and Structures of Western Music (MU 151, 152, 251, 252)
  2. Music in the Twentieth Century (MU 317)
  3. At least two semesters of composition - either Composition (MU 357, 358) or through independent study,
    a) one of which must be taken by the end of the junior year
    b) one of which must be take during the fall semester of the Senior year.

Recommended

  1. Orchestration (MU 355) [strongly recommended]
  2. Tonal Counterpoint (MU 356)

Proposal

  1. Scores of at least two completed works in different media. A tape of a performance of at least one of these works must be submitted.
  2. A two to three page (typewritten, double-spaced) proposal, describing:
    a) the nature of the proposed composition/s, including such information as the number of pieces or movements planned, the approximate length in minutes, the medium or media involved, particular stylistic, formal, or aesthetic ideas shaping pre-compositional planning for the composition, etc.;
    b) describe the preparations involved thus far for the project, including consultations with the advisor;
    c) outline a plan for completion of the project, including a schedule of work and possible performance;
    d) describe the format of the final project which will be submitted for evaluation (a tape of a live performance is highly recommended)

The Composition

  1. One or more compositions
  2. One or more readers in addition to the composition advisor to form the students Composition Review Committee (CRC).
  3. Presented to the Department as either a live public performance or electronic realization no later than mid April
