These will test your memory and knowledge of terms and ideas and
your ability to recognize musical examples. Your final grade for
the quizzes will be an average of your quiz grades. |

| I will administer a comprehensive exam at the end of the semester
on the semester's materials. If your grade at the end of the semester
is B+ or better, you may be excused from the final. The quiz average
grade will serve in this case as your final exam grade. |

| Research Essay |

| Essay Proposal Abstract. A short (500-word) description of (a) your thesis and (b) an appraisal of your sources with an attached bibliography. The essay's grade derives from the quality of the thesis and the bibliography and of the writing. (See the essay grading guidelines for this course.) Find at least three published sources to support your research. Establish an argument or position to support about the music of the Indian subcontinent. Due as an Word attachment on 23 February. |

| A number of electronic sources are available on the musics of South Asia. For example, the Center for Research Libraries offers this website. |

| Draft. A complete draft of your essay (2500 words, including bibliography). Due as a Word attachment on 23 March. |
