Ira Gitler, From Swing to Bop

(New York: Oxford University Press, 1985)

AN INDEX

(Version 1.1 -- July 1997)

ARRANGED by SUBJECT, and intended to SUPPLEMENT the INDEX of PEOPLE and TITLES found in the Gitler book

Ira Gitler's oral history of jazz during the 1930s, '40s, and '50s offers a rich source of information about the exciting transition from swing to bop. Because the index in the book is limited to people's names, the titles of tunes, and the names of bands, it is not always easy to locate information on specific topics quickly. To make this fine oral history still more useful to scholars, musicians, and students, a group of undergraduate music majors in the Skidmore College Music Department teamed up (as a seminar project during the Spring 1996 semester) to produce the following supplemental index to Gitler's book. This supplemental index--which we publish here in full--provides a topical, or subject, index to the book. Interested readers can use the index to gain quick access to information on topics ranging from the music business to race relations, from musical styles to clothing and fashion, from drug and alcohol use to the life of the jazz musician on the road, from venues to record labels, and much more. The indexing project occupied only a few weeks of seminar energies. We view it definitely as a first version. Despite all the imperfections we know it to contain and all the improvements which we wish we had had time to make, we offer it to the on-line jazz community in the hope that you will find it useful.
