FILENE CONCERT SERIES 2007 marks the 25th anniversary of the beginning of the Filene Concert Series. Since 1982, the generosity of the Lincoln & Therese Filene Foundation has brought major international artists to campus to teach and to perform. Notables who have performed in Filene in this series include pianists Vladimir Ashkenazy and Christopher O’Riley, mezzo Marilyn Horne and soprano Heidi Grant Murphy, jazz pianist Chick Corea and saxophonist Joe Lovano, pipa player Wu Man, and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet.
STERNE VIRTUOSO SERIES The Sterne Virtuoso Series marks its 10th anniversary in 2007. A generous bequest from Jean Sterne, ‘32, established this series, which has brought such exceptional artists as pianists Garrick Ohlsson and Stephen Hough, the Kronos Quartet, and jazz great Dave Brubeck to perform and teach at Skidmore.
CARNEGIE HALL PREMIERES series (NEW !) Skidmore inaugurates the new Carnegie Hall Premieres series with two concerts in the 2007-08 season. Both concerts offer Capital Region audiences the opportunity to hear the upstate premieres of chamber works recently commissioned by Carnegie Hall, alongside major 20th century classics by Debussy, Bartok and Poulenc. The young members of the exciting Ensemble ACJW will perform these works during residencies at Skidmore College in October and February. This highly touted new ensemble is comprised of post-graduate fellows from the Academy (a program of Carnegie Hall, the Juilliard School of Music, and the Weill Music Institute), in partnership with the New York City Department of Education. Following the Skidmore preview concerts, the ensemble will present the same programs at Carnegie Hall. This new collaboration between Skidmore and Carnegie Hall grows out of the Zankel family’s passionate generosity to both institutions.
