Basic position course. Correct design of position at all gaits,
gaining authority over the horse, use of elementary aids at
walk, trot and canter. For students with limited or no riding

Introduction to Riding II: (1 Credit)
Concentration on position and application of aids. Students
should be able to walk, trot and canter. (Fall & Spring)

Position & Control I: (1 Credit)
Emphasis on improving elementary control techniques with an
introduction to work over fences. Riders should have a basic
knowledge of the aids and how they are used on different levels
of riding. (Fall & Spring)

PA 104 R
Position & Control II: (1 Credit)
Emphasis on riding with a light contact and the rider's unity
and security on the flat. Students will work to improve technique
and balance over fences.

Novice Equitation I: (1 Credit)
Emphasis on further refinement of aids as they apply to techniques
on the flat and over fences. The strategy of riding simple courses
will be a focal point. FALL

Novice Equitation II: (1 Credit)
Emphasis on balance as it applies to the mechanics of movement.

Emphasis on position and effective application of riding skills.
Riders must have a solid foundation in Hunter Seat Equitation
on the flat and over fences. FALL

Intermediate Equitation II: (1 Credit)
Emphasis on the perfecting of skills as they apply to competition.
Comparative riding styles will be introduced and explored. Opportunities

Advanced Equitation: (1 Credit)
Emphasis on skills in horsemastership on the flat and over
fences. Riders must possess a high level of technical proficiency

Schooling Horses: (1 Credit)
Introduction to a system of schooling horses and their development
through the progressive levels of training. FALL & SPRING

Applied Schooling: (2 Credits)
Theoretical and practical aspects of progressive levels of
training with respect to the horseâs physical and mental
development. FALL & SPRING

Advanced Equitation: (2 Credits)
The harmonious development of the horse and rider as interpreted
through classical dressage. The requirements of the respective
levels are gradually increased corresponding to the natural

Introduction to Teaching Riding: (1 Credit)
Students will be required to participate in lecture sessions
and supervised observation to learn, discuss, and demonstrate
teaching techniques, safety measures, horse assignments and
lesson plan progression. Students will also be required to teach
specific riding courses. FALL & SPRING

PA 307 R
Introduction to Coaching Equestrian Competitions: (3 Credits)
This course is restricted to 2 students per academic year.
Fall & Spring Term. A student may elect to intern with the
coach of the Inter collegiate Riding Team. They will learn techniques
of selecting a team, management of the team, assist in coaching
sessions, scheduling, record keeping, and publicity. They will
also learn the techniques required to select horses for each
of the disciplines and maintenance thereof.
PREREQUISITE: Permission of Respective Coaches.

Stable Management: (2 Credits)
An internship in the techniques of managing a barn. The course
would encompass the following: 1) Selection and daily care of
horses, i.e., type and amount of feeds and exercise. 2) Maintenance
of the physical plant. Efficient use of facilities. 3) Selection
and maintenance of veterinary and farrier care. 4) Selection
and supervision of student workers. 5) Coordination of all non-collegiate
activities. 6) Maintenance of records. 7) Fiscal planning. FALL
& SPRING
