President’s Welcome 
Skidmore is hardly alone in desiring and seeking a broadly diverse
population of students, faculty, and staff. How we’re moving toward that
goal, however, may be different from other colleges.For us, diversity is best addressed through interculturalism—bringing together individuals representing multiple ethnicities and races, places of origin, socioeconomic backgrounds, religions and spiritualities, and certainly interests, perspectives, and talents. But bringing such individuals together is only the beginning. The real challenge—a challenge with which we struggle daily—is facilitating the melding of those individuals into a true community. Toward that goal, success is not a one-time benchmark or statistic to be achieved, but an ongoing process of growth. That process is slower than we’d like, sometimes frustrating, frequently inspirational, but always critical to what Skidmore is and wants to be. It is a process emblematic of our commitment to becoming a true intercultural community. If the journey toward that aspiration resonates with you—if you can see yourself as a participant with us in creating such a community—then we eagerly invite you to learn more about Skidmore. And in the process, we hope you’ll learn something about the many and diverse individuals who continually demonstrate that in virtually everything we do at Skidmore, including building a true intercultural community, creative thought matters.
