PURPOSES AND TYPES OF ACADEMIC PROGRAM REVIEWS

            External Reviews

The entire college and some of our pre-professional programs must undergo periodic accreditation reviews.  The standards for these reviews are set by the professional group that conducts the reviews.  The college or program prepares a self-study with appropriate supporting data, an external team reviews the self-study and data, usually with an accompanying on-site visit, and then the recommendations of the review team are submitted to the accrediting body’s board for appropriate action.

Internal Reviews

Skidmore College reviews academic programs in several ways.  When a program is first proposed or when it undergoes major revisions, it is reviewed by the:

Curriculum Committee

and the

Committee on Educational Policies and Planning.

In addition, each academic program is required to submit a periodic formal program review report, accompanied by a review by external reviewers, to the:

Office of the Dean of the Faculty.

External and Internal Reviews vs. Academic Assessment

External and internal reviews and accreditation are much broader than academic assessment, but include academic assessment as one component of the review.

            Institutional Research and Assessment

The Office of Institutional Research conducts all-College assessment-related research that involves data collection and analysis.  The Office provides timely, accurate, and reliable data to support assessment studies as needed.  Note:  Institutional Research does not assess the academic programs, but, rather, assists faculty in gathering and analyzing data as they apply to assessment.
