| The
Career Services Staff is eager to help you prepare for graduate
school. This webshop will expose you to a variety of websites
which provide information about selecting programs, the application
process and ways to fund graduate study.
Make
sure you consult faculty in your academic
department if you are considering graduate study in your
major field. The prelaw advisor is available to help students
considering law school. If you are considering Medical School
or another professional school in a health related field make
sure you meet Vasantha Narasimhan or another member of the
Health Professions Advisory Committee.
Links
like Gradschools.com
and Graduate
School Guide allow you to search for schools by a variety
of disciplines through one site. Gradschools.com
allow you to send emails to the admissions offices of targeted
schools directly from your search list. These sites
are not always comprehensive, however. Another excellent resource
for identifying schools by discipline is a print resource
- Peterson's Guides to Graduate Programs. This guide and many
other valuable resources regarding graduate school are available
in the Career Services Library.
There
are a variety of ways which you can fund your graduate study.
Some research oriented disciplines like psychology, science
and engineering are heavily funded and most graduate students
receive grants which cover tuition and some living expenses.
Grants and fellowships are available in most disciplines but
in some cases they are restricted to only the most qualified
applicants. Use Fastweb
to research grants and fellowships electronically and also
consult the Grant's Register in the Career Services library.
Most
graduate departments hire some of their own graduate students
as research and/or teaching assistants to help them carry
out their work. Assistantships are one of the most effective
ways to fund your graduate study. Contact departments at schools
you are targeting and ask about details. Please note that
deadlines for assistantships may be earlier than admissions
deadlines.
