Approved Programs
Policies and Procedures
Skidmore College‘s structure
for study abroad was initially developed out of concerns from
students and faculty regarding the quality of the overseas programs
from which Skidmore was accepting credits. As a result of these
concerns, Skidmore developed a list of Approved Programs and adjusted
the financial structure to allow for a more inclusive approach
to overseas study.
Students may participate in Skidmore Programs – including
Skidmore in Beijing, Skidmore
in London, Skidmore in
Paris, Skidmore
in Spain, The
Shakespeare Programme, and The
India Program – and Approved Programs.
The Approved Programs list
includes programs around the world that Skidmore considers a good
fit in terms of academic quality and administrative support for
our students. Both Skidmore Programs and Approved Programs are
linked to Skidmore’s curriculum and are meant to support
majors and minors. Approved Programs have been determined by Skidmore’s
academic departments and programs in conjunction with the Office
of International Programs. Our main objective for this new structure
is to include programs that allow Skidmore to integrate more closely
our students’ experiences abroad with their work here on
campus.
As the list of programs links
directly with majors and minors, we must consider the need to
make these important academic opportunities available to all Skidmore
students. With this in mind all financial aid will apply to all
Skidmore and Approved Programs. Our goal is to allow students
to take advantage of a valuable educational endeavor regardless
of their financial situation.
Students are charged a Skidmore
program fee that is equal to the fee charged for a semester or
year on campus. Skidmore then handles payments to program providers.
This fee structure allows Skidmore to better support our commitment
to this important academic opportunity.
Skidmore’s study abroad
structure ensures a greater level of confidence in the students’
overall experiences abroad. Our students enroll in programs with
levels of academic rigor consistent with their educational experiences
on campus and receive appropriate support in their co-curricular
and residential lives overseas. We anticipate that this policy
will lead to more of our students spending a semester or full
year abroad, enriching not only their own education while away
from Skidmore but also bringing more diverse perspectives back
to the campus when they return.
