OIP Approved Programs
Academic Policies
- Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0. Students who do
not meet this requirement must petition the Committee on Academic
Standing through the Office of International Programs. The Committee
on Academic Standing is responsible for final decisions regarding
eligibility to apply to study abroad.
- Students may participate on Skidmore Programs and Approved
Programs.
- Both Skidmore Programs and Approved Programs are linked to
Skidmore’s curriculum and are aimed to support various
majors and minors.
- Approved Programs have been determined by Skidmore’s
academic departments and programs in conjunction with the Office
of International Programs (OIP). The Approved Programs list
is available through OIP.
- Students wanting study abroad credit to count toward their
majors and minors should choose programs from the Approved Programs
list for their major/minor department. The Approved Programs
list is available through OIP.
- Students who do not need credit toward their major or minor
are able to participate on any of the programs on the college-wide
Master Approved Programs List. The Master List is available
through OIP.
- Students may petition to participate on a program that is
not on the Master List. The petition must have an academic focus
and have support of the students’ major/minor department.
Students wanting to petition must meet with an OIP advisor for
details.
- Credits will count as transfer credits for Approved Programs.
Credits will count as Skidmore credits for Skidmore programs.
- Grades will not count toward the Skidmore GPA. However, all
courses and grades will appear on the Skidmore transcript. Students
will need to receive a “C” or better to receive
credit for a course. Grades for Skidmore programs will count
toward the Skidmore GPA.
- All courses at the 300 level will be applicable to the all
college requirement for maturity-level credits. Each department
determines how many maturity-level credits may be brought in
from overseas for the major or minor. Therefore, students must
work with their advisors before departure to determine which
of the 300-level courses taken overseas will fulfill departmental
or other requirements.
- Customarily, second-semester sophomores and first-semester
juniors apply to study abroad. Students at other stages in their
Skidmore education must attend a mandatory advising session
with an OIP advisor. After this initial meeting, students are
required to submit a letter of faculty support (preferably from
the instructor of the student’s Scribner Seminar) and
a one page letter explaining why they want to study abroad outside
of the junior year. Students need to indicate in the letter
what their academic plans are for the remainder of their time
at Skidmore.
- Although sophomores studying abroad are not required to declare
their majors before participating, it is highly recommended
that they do so. Therefore, if a sophomore has a solid idea
of what his/her major will be, he/she should declare prior to
submitting his/her application.
