Housing
Housing
is an important component of the overall study abroad experience.
As a program participant, you will be expected to adapt to your
accommodations and to respect the cultural context in which you
are living. Both of these housing options will require a commitment
to speaking Mandarin as much as possible and adhering to a set
of household and residence hall rules and etiquette that may feel
restrictive compared to that which you are typically accustomed.
Students may elect to share a room with a Chinese student in a
Bei Wai residence hall or to reside in a home stay with a Chinese
family.
The residence hall rooms are wired for high-speed Internet access
and the facility includes a lounge and kitchen. Students who elect
to reside in a residence hall may opt to stay with a Chinese family
for a short period during the semester. There are home stay placements
available throughout Beijing for students who have a strong commitment
to cultural integration in China and who are prepared to give
up some freedom and privacy in order to experience Chinese family
life. Students with strong motivation and adequate communication
skills in Chinese are encouraged to consider this unique option.
Meals
Students in the residence halls may take their meals at one of
several university cafeterias or prepare their own meals in shared
kitchens. Students may also take advantage of the many small,
inexpensive, privately-operated restaurants near the campus and
throughout Beijing. Students living in home stays are provided
with two meals a day by their host family (breakfast and dinner),
seven days a week.
