Here, There, & Back Again

Welcome to Beijing!

Students at a Buddhist temple. This is a great time for American students to study Chinese language, history and culture in this great ancient and capital city of China. As China’s political, economic and cultural center, Beijing offers you a unique opportunity to eyewitness and experience the dynamics of this fastest growing country in the world. Beijing Foreign Studies University ("Bei Wai") offers all program participants a rich student life, a beautiful campus and a solid academic program.

Skidmore in Beijing offers an interdisciplinary program in Chinese studies and places a focus on independent field work and research. Besides taking courses in Chinese language, Art, Economics, Government, History or Anthropology, students go on field trips and do fieldwork on their independent project. The research topic is designed by the student and supervised by the Field Studies course instructor. Local field trips may include the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the imperial summer resorts, local museums, and a bike ride in the 'hutongs', the old Beijing alleys where the ordinary and traditional life style of the local residents persists and co-exists with China’s rapid urbanization, globalization, and modernization. Come to Beijing to see and experience China! We are waiting for you!
