Orientation and Cultural Activities
The Skidmore in Beijing Program begins with a mandatory pre-departure
orientation held on the Skidmore College campus in Saratoga Springs,
NY, during the spring semester prior to studying abroad. This
orientation includes course work and readings that will prepare
students for their experience in China. Upon arrival in Beijing,
students begin an intense on-site orientation that focuses on
Chinese language, culture, and history and prepares students for
their entrance into IES and the Beijing Foreign Studies University.
Cultural activities are an important part of the Skidmore program
and serve to complement students’ course work. Guided tours
of local museums and historical landmarks are planned, as well
as excursions outside of Beijing. You are also encouraged to take
advantage of university cultural events.
Extended Field Trip
Students will have the opportunity to visit one of China’s
minority areas during a two-week study tour along with the IES
Beijing program participants. The visit will offer first hand
exposure to some of China’s diversity and examine issues
beyond the metropolis of modern Beijing.
