Bath, England
Faculty Director: Catherine Golden, Professor of English
Two of Jane Austen's novels -- Northanger
Abbey (1818) and Persuasion (1818) -- are set in
Bath, a seat of culture in eighteenth-century England. Using facilities
of Advanced Studies in England, located in Bath, students explored
the settings in Bath vital to characterization and plot of these
two novels -- specifically the Pump Room and the Assembly Room
-- and walked the Bath city streets central to Austen and her
characters. Time was devoted to the biography of Jane Austen and
the Jane Austen cultural center, also located in Bath. The course
comprised reading of biography and fiction, on-site field trips,
group projects, and the creation of an individual Jane Austen
analytic booklet focusing on her life in Bath and creation of
these two famous novels.
