Master of Art in Liberal Studies

“You come to your education with your own history and background and experience; your own hopes for what you want to do next." Juliana Minotty, Chicago, IL
A Low-Residency Graduate Degree Designed for Working Adults

Working one-on-one with Skidmore faculty, master’s students handcraft individualized concentrations in every area of the liberal arts. After taking a weeklong introductory seminar on campus, students typically complete the rest of their coursework at a distance through individualized tutorials with Skidmore professors, in-class courses at universities near their homes, supervised internships, and/or study abroad.

Studying part-time, students take an average of two-and-a-half years to complete the program’s 30 credits. Graduates enter Ph.D. programs and professional schools, further their current careers and start new ones.

Apply now for July!

Fit your education into your life
Designed for students who are balancing their studies with career and family, the Master’s Program enables students anywhere in the world to immerse themselves in a graduate education without uprooting themselves from their jobs or homes. After coming to the Skidmore campus for a week-long introductory seminar in July or January, students take most of the rest of their coursework through one-on-one tutorials with Skidmore faculty. Learn more about the Program's structure.

Design your own curriculum

Each master’s student works one-on-one with faculty advisors to handcraft individualized concentrations focused on his or her specific area of interest. Typically, students take their own approach to these concentrations, combining coursework in several areas to explore the questions they find most fascinating. Learn more about Academic Advising.

Work one-on-one with Distinguished Faculty
Students take most of their courses as independent studies with faculty at Skidmore College and other top universities across the country, with independent scholars, and with visual and performing artists. Students collaborate with their instructors to design these courses, and typically take them at a distance through e-mail, phone, and surface mail. Learn more about the Faculty.

Affording your Degree

Financial aid is available for all students, and tuition for the Master of Arts program is designed to be affordable: part-time students complete the program in an average of three years, at a cost of approximately $9,000 a year. Learn more about tuition and financial aid.
