Skidmore College is proud to host the second annual Arts
and Curriculum Institute (ACI) for K-4 teachers in New York
State. This new professional development institute will enable participants
to use successful methods of teaching an arts-integrated curriculum
in order to promote student learning in English Language Arts. ACI
will be unique in the depth of its approach to integrate arts and
the curriculum, with a focus on the skills assessed in the 4th grade
ELA test. The retreat will be held at Skidmore’s magnificent
Tang Museum, a state-of-the-art facility, surrounded by the bustling
summer arts community of Saratoga Springs.
Master teaching artists Susan Griss and Julie
Kabat will lead the Institute in hands-on daily classes that present
specific lessons and methods for using creative movement, music, and
poetry to improve reading comprehension and writing skills. Additional
sessions will be led by Joyce Rubin, director of student teaching
at Skidmore, to help participants reflect on what they are learning
and develop lesson plans to ensure practical classroom applications.
The program will also include storytelling, visual arts, and a collaborative
creative project. Teachers are encouraged to enroll in teams, to facilitate
ongoing peer support. Enrollment is limited to 35 participants. Participants
can arrange for in-service or academic credit.
The Arts and Curriculum Institute is
a project of Concerted Effort, Inc., a not-for-profit devoted to
arts in education since 1978, in partnership with Skidmore’s
Office of the Dean of Special Programs and the Tang Teaching Museum
and Art Gallery.
ACI, as a program of Concerted Effort,
is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council
on the Arts, a state agency.
Goals
Just as dance and music go hand in hand, so do the arts and education,
creativity and children.
Through arts integration, teachers will be able to:
• Help students develop the characteristics
of effective readers
• Enliven and clarify the mechanics of writing
• Enable students to find authenticity as writers
• Nurture both individual and cooperative learning
• Build community and cultivate creativity in the classroom
• Expand and enrich strategies to reach students with diverse
learning styles
Together we hope to help foster a reflective and supportive teaching
community.
