Completing Your Studies Entirely Online

Through Skidmore's connection with the Sloan Asynchronous Learning Network, you can complete your studies entirely online in one of these interdisciplinary concentrations:

American History and Culture

Human Nature and Behavior

Communication and the Arts


American History and Culture is a program in American cultural history with an emphasis on regional or period history.

Typical preparation prior to enrollment:

  • A two-semester survey of American History, or American History CLEP
  • One additional course in American literature, music, art, or culture

Sample Curriculum:

Seven intermediate or advanced courses and a final project (6 credits), including:

  • One course focusing on a region of the US or period in American history.
  • One course focusing on the development of an American cultural or artistic tradition.
  • One course focusing on America's relationship to the larger world.

Human Nature and Behavior is an interdisciplinary program focusing on the fundamental nature of human beings and the place of the human animal in the world.

Typical preparation prior to enrollment:

  • Two courses from: General Psychology, Principles of Sociology, Cultural Anthropology/or Social Science CLEP
  • One course in literature or philosophy

Sample Curriculum:

Seven intermediate or advanced courses and a final project (six credits), including:

  • One course focusing on individual development
  • One course focusing on gender
  • One course focusing on the place of humans in the natural world.

Communication and the Arts is a program focusing on the nature of communication through artistic expression and the role of the arts in individual expression and cultural development.

Typical preparation prior to enrollment:

  • A two-semester survey course in art history, music appreciation, English literature, or a two-semester survey of Western Civilization, or Humanities CLEP
  • One additional course in expository or creative writing, studio art, or music

Sample curriculum:

Seven intermediate or advanced courses and a final project (six credits), including:

  • One course focusing on the nature of communication and/or artistic expression across media, or looking at one medium in a broader cultural context
  • Two courses focusing on different art forms/ or media
