| Skidmore -> Everyone
|
Welcome everyone! Thank you for joining us for tonight's live chat! Before we begin,
the panelist will introduce themselves. |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Everyone
|
Hello everyone! This is Sarah Ireland, Associate Director of Admissions. I have been
at Skidmore for 7 years. I am highly involved in quite a few areas regarding recruitment
and admissions. I work with the early decision committee. My areas of admissions travel
are MD, VA, DC, PA, DE. Ask me anything you'd like..... |
| Student_Matt -> Everyone
|
Hi, my name is Matt and I am a senior Exercise Science major with a minor in Environmental
Studies. I spend most of my time playing and preparing for Baseball. Last year, I
spent my fall semester studying abroad in Australia. Also, don't be afraid to ask
about summers in Saratoga, as I spent this past summer here. Welcome! |
| Admissions_Matt -> Everyone
|
Hello. I'm Matt Cohen. I'm Associate Director of Admissions here at Skidmore. I have
been at the College for 13 years. I recruit in New England and I am the public address
announcer for men's hockey here. |
| Student_Chet -> Everyone
|
Hi Everyone, this is Chet Cochrane from Woodstock, NY! I'm a junior here and a Business
and Spanish major. I am also a tour guide, a student blogger and I work with the Big
Brothers Big Sister chapter in Saratoga Springs. I'm happy to answer any questions! |
| Student_Abby -> Everyone
|
Hi guys, I'm Abby Silverman. I'm a junior from Sudbury, MA. I am a double major in
Government and Anthropology. I'm a tour guide, treasurer of our Voices for Planned
Parenthood club, and also a member of Hillel. I'm happy to answer any questions! |
| Student_Geoff -> Everyone
|
Hey, I'm Geoff, from Underhill, VT. I'm a senior government and International Affairs
major, and I'm also on the Skidmore Baseball team. I studied abroad in Germany studying
European Politics, and traveled extensively while I was there. |
| AndrewLoizides -> Admissions_Matt
|
Can you please tell me how the admissions committee informs Early Decision applicants
on December 15? |
| Admissions_Matt -> AndrewLoizides
|
We still use regular US mail to send our ED decisions. |
| Jason -> Student_Abby
|
1.What is the average SAT score and GPA of skidmore 's applicant? 2.what is the student
housing like in skidmore??How many students share one room and will we have an opportunity
to get a single room? 3. will there be a lot of sports team in skidmore?? |
| Student_Abby -> Jason
|
Hi Jason - I can help you out with housing. We are lucky at Skidmore to have great
dorms! As a Freshman, you will either be put in a double or a triple, but no worries,
the rooms are really big! As a Sophomore, you have the opportunity to live in a single
if you wish, or you can choose to live in a double with a friend if you would like. |
| My -> Student_Geoff
|
Could you please tell me about some Skidmore traditions which you love? What does
Skidmore admissions committee look for in an applicant? |
| Student_Geoff -> My
|
I guess there are a number of traditions at Skidmore. One of the more entertaining
traditions would be Fun Day, which is a day in the spring right before finals where
the entire student body blows off steam out on the green. There's live music, a bbq,
and a DJ. It lasts all afternoon and is a pretty good time. |
| OlufemiHaynes -> Admissions_Sarah
|
I am highly interested in Skidmore College, but I am afraid my grades, SAT scores,
and financial status will not allow me to get a Skidmore education. Could you please
tell me how do I apply to Skidmore's Opportunity Program so I stand a chance of being
admitted? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> OlufemiHaynes
|
Hello there. Thank you for your question. There is not a different application process
for OP. Submit your application through the Common Application and then the admissions
committee will determine which applications to send to the OP department. Then the
OP department will read those applications and determine who to admit. This is a good
process for you because you might have a chance to be admitted by either committee. |
| My -> Student_Matt
|
Could you please tell me about some Skidmore traditions which you love? What does
Skidmore admissions committee look for in an applicant? |
| Student_Matt -> My
|
I can tell you about my favorite Skidmore/Saratoga Springs tradition. That would be
Chowerderfest. This is a day where a lot of the restaurants downtown make chowders
and everyone can come try it and vote on their favorite. All the food is great and
the streets are crowded. It is always really cold as it is in January, but the chowder
will warm you up! There are so many great traditions though... |
| Marilyn -> Admissions_Matt
|
There are many upstate, small, private liberal arts colleges to explore and consider.
How does Skidmore differentiate itself from, let's say, Union, Colgate, Hamilton? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Marilyn
|
Hello Marilyn. You're right - there are many good Lib Arts colleges in the Northeast.
I think our town of Saratoga Springs is the best lib arts town. Also, we have a really
caring, creative community here. Newsweek magazine just named us the 9th Happiest
College in the USA!! |
| daphne -> Admissions_Matt
|
how critically will first quarter grades be looked at for applicants who decided to
do early decision 1 |
| Admissions_Matt -> daphne
|
Senior grades are extremely important for ED applicants because they represent your
most recent work and how you do in your most advanced classes. First quarter grades
are among the first things we consider ED. |
| francis927 -> Student_Abby
|
Why did you chose to apply early decision to Skidmore? |
| Student_Abby -> francis927
|
I applied early decision to Skidmore because I felt like it had everything I was looking
for. I wanted a small, liberal arts school that wasn't in the middle of no where -
Saratoga Springs is such a vibrant place to go to school in, and that definitely helped
my decision. I was drawn to the small class sizes at Skidmore and the fact that students
really seemed to love it here. I absolutely love it here! |
| My -> Admissions_Sarah
|
Could you please tell me about some Skidmore traditions which you love? What does
Skidmore admissions committee look for in an applicant? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> My
|
Hi there. I can speak to what the admissions committee looks for....Well rounded,
adventurous people with a terrific desire to learn and explore. Most of our students
are engaged in clubs and extracurricular life, so that is something we also look for.
After all...Creative thought matters! Most admitted students are taking some strong
classes but are also well balanced outside the classroom. I hope this helps describe
our terrific student body here at Skidmore. |
| francis927 -> Student_Chet
|
Why did you chose to apply early decision to Skidmore? |
| Student_Chet -> francis927
|
Hi Francis- That's a great question. I started looking at colleges relatively early
compared to a lot of my friends. By the time off all of senior year I was sure that
I wanted to come to Skidmore. I loved the idea of small classes, strong relationships
with faculty, beautiful campus, and an amazing town. I was sure of my choice at the
time and I don't regret anything. I do however advise that if you're not totally sure
don't commit, make sure you're ready. Good luck! |
| PrithviBatra19 -> Student_Geoff
|
My first question is, how is a life of a student athlete at Skidmore, if it is possible,
may I speak with a student athlete, I was at Skidmore during the summer and have been
in touch with Coach Joe Burke. |
| Student_Geoff -> PrithviBatra19
|
Hey PrithviBatra19, being a student athlete is a pretty awesome experience here at
Skidmore. For starters, you have a group of friends and people to hang out with from
day one. You never feel like an outsider, and you always have something to do. As
far as the social life goes, most of the teams here are pretty interconnected, and
we all know how to have a good time. During the season though, it can get pretty tough
with school work. There will be times when you don't have time to do anything besides
go to practice, eat, and do homework. But all in all, I've loved my four years playing
baseball here. I know most of the basketball team, and they're all good guys. |
| JeremyJaico2 -> Student_Abby
|
What facility stands out the most on your campus and why? |
| Student_Abby -> JeremyJaico2
|
Our music building, Zankel, was just completed 2010. In fact, as it was being built,
it was named "the best unbuilt building in the state of NY!" Its absolutely beautiful
- it has a 600 seat auditorium where there are a wide variety of concerts. Its a beautiful
building! |
| Alexander -> Admissions_Matt
|
With the cost of college becoming prohibitive to many students, how is Skidmore addressing
the financial issues that many students face? Specifically, how do you make sure students
do not incur a cripling amount of student loan debt should they decide to matriculate? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Alexander
|
Hi Alexander. We know our costs are substantial but last year our average financial
aid package for incoming freshmen was $32,000. Additionally, the loan component of
that package was limited to about 10% of the overall amount. That's probably more
than you have in your pocket right now but it's not the crippling debt you sometimes
hear about. Also, we meet full financial need for all admitted students. |
| RachelChea -> Student_Matt
|
1. Is there a core curriculum for freshman at Skidmore? 2. Do you accept credits or
exemptions from SAT subject tests or AP exams? If so what is the score requirement?
3. are SAT subject tests required for admission? |
| Student_Matt -> RachelChea
|
To answer your first question, the only requirement you must complete your freshmen
year is your freshmen seminar. Skidmore offers a wide variety of seminars that cover
a wide variety of topics. You get grouped with people in your residence hall, and
it is a great way to make friends right off the bat. I was in a course called Hollywood
Science, where we tried to verify whether the science exposed in hollywood movies
was accurate.
You will be assigned to an adivsor, who you can communicate with the summer before
coming to Skidmore. They will help you develop a curriculum for your freshmen year.
Hope that helped with that question |
| Julie -> Student_Abby
|
Why did you pick Skidmore over other schools that you applied to? |
| Student_Abby -> Julie
|
Hi Julie! I applied early decision to Skidmore, so actually it was the only school
I applied to! It was the first school that I toured, and as soon as I got to Saratoga
Springs and saw the campus I knew it was the place for me. Not only is Saratoga Springs
an amazing town to go to school in, but we have such a beautiful campus as well. The
small class sizes also drew me to Skidmore - I love the fact that I am able to have
such close relationships with all my professors. Hope that helps! |
| KaeleiHaws -> Admissions_Sarah
|
What is expected in a Letter of Recommendation? Who would be the best people to write
them? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> KaeleiHaws
|
Hello KaeleiHaws! Letters of recommendation should come from 2 academic teachers who
know you well and who have seen good progress. The areas of study should be from any
of the following areas: Math, Science, Foreign Language, History or English. We like
to hear about your growth as a student and how you and your character are involved
in your school life. I hope this helps! |
| mollygrace -> Admissions_Matt
|
Hi all! I was wondering, what was the acceptance rate last year of early decision
round 1? |
| Admissions_Matt -> mollygrace
|
Our overall acceptance rate last year was 41%. ED1 is always higher than that and
typically lands well over 50%. The numbers are very small compared to regular decision
to each year's rate is subject to significant fluctuations. |
| Julie -> Student_Geoff
|
How common is double-majoring? Is it possible to do so and graduate in four years? |
| Student_Geoff -> Julie
|
Hey Julie. It is pretty common to double major here, I know a lot of people that are
doing it currently, myself included. It is very possible to finish both majors in
four years. I didn't even declare my second major until the middle of my junior year.
I'll be graduating this spring with no trouble at all. |
| JeremyJaico2 -> Student_Geoff
|
What facility stands out the most on your campus and why? |
| Student_Geoff -> JeremyJaico2
|
Hey JeremyJaico2, I guess the facility that stands out the most would be Jonsson Tower.
It's the tallest point in Saratoga, and you can see it from everywhere on campus |
| daphne -> Student_Abby
|
is their anyway freshmen can get singles? as in dorms |
| Student_Abby -> daphne
|
Hi Daphne. As a Freshman, you will either get put in a double or a triple. However,
if you are unhappy in your room - or even if you just want some more space - you can
apply through Residential Life to get placed in a single. |
| Julie -> Student_Matt
|
Why did you pick Skidmore over other schools that you applied to? |
| Student_Matt -> Julie
|
Hi Julie, I picked Skidmore because it gave me the opportunity to play baseball, be in an interactive
and challenging classroom setting, and live in Saratoga Springs for 4 years! |
| laura -> Admissions_Matt
|
Does Skidmore have its own CSS Profile waiver code? I know the College Board waives
up to 6 automatically, but what if a low income student is applying to more than 6
colleges that require it? |
| Admissions_Matt -> laura
|
I'm sorry Laura but we have no aid staff members in the room tonight. Please contact
our aid office with that question. You can reach them at finaid@skidmore.edu or by calling 518-580-5750. Thank you. |
| Julie -> Student_Geoff
|
What is the best part about Skidmore's campus life? |
| Student_Geoff -> Julie
|
Julie, I guess the best thing about campus life here is the closeness of the campus.
It's pretty small, which means that everybody knows everybody. This isn't for everybody,
but if it is, it makes for a pretty great college experience. At any time, there are
tons of people that I could call up and hang out with. |
| GeoMom -> Admissions_Matt
|
My daughter would like to study media/communications/film, but we do not see that
offered. Would it be possible for her to design such a major in your self-determined
program? |
| Admissions_Matt -> GeoMom
|
Yes - that is certainly possible here. We are very interdisciplinary in our academic
approach here and our faculty advisors can work with students to design a major like
the one you have described. |
| Jason -> Admissions_Sarah
|
1.What is the average SAT score and GPA of skidmore 's applicant? 2.what is the student
housing like in skidmore??How many students share one room and will we have an opportunity
to get a single room? 3. will there be a lot of sports team in skidmore?? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Jason
|
Hi Jason, Thanks for your questions. SATs are required but they are not the end all
for us. We would rather see strong grades and classes than just a test. However most
of our students score between 1250-1400 out of 1600. 1980/2400. Student housing is
amazing. Great dorms, suites, apartment housing for upper classmen. 90% of our students
live on campus. Team sports are awesome. Liberty league is very strong and Skidmore
went into post season play in 16 out of the 19 D3 sports. Intramurals and club sports
are also strong. Hope this helps! |
| McKenna -> Student_Abby
|
How many students at Skidmore participate in internships? |
| Student_Abby -> McKenna
|
Hi McKenna! Most Skidmore students, at some point during their 4 years here, do some
sort of outside the classroom experience - whether it is research with a professor
or an internship. This past summer I interned at the Israeli Consulate in Boston -
it was an amazing experience, and I was lucky enough to have professors here at Skidmore
write me letters of recommendation that helped me get the internship! We also have
a great Career Services center here at Skidmore that will help you look for internships. |
| mollygrace -> Admissions_Matt
|
Will all Early Decision applicants find out the decision on December 15th? |
| Admissions_Matt -> mollygrace
|
We send all ED decisions by regular US mail. We mail the letters a few days before
the 15th hoping all letters will hit mailboxes by the 15th. |
| ChrisHerrmann -> Student_Chet
|
I'm wondering about the arts and cultural life around the Saratoga Springs area. I
enjoy indie rock, going to concerts, art shows, films, author readings. Are these
events available to me at Skidmore? |
| Student_Chet -> ChrisHerrmann
|
Hi Chris- One of my favorite things about Skidmore is how much the town of Saratoga
Springs has to answer. Many liberal arts colleges are found in small remote areas
without much to do. We have a number of amazing bars and coffe shops in town and a
lot of amazing performers who come to Saratoga and the Albany region in general. I
also enjoy indie rock, over the past years Skidmore has brought in: TV on the Radio,
Grizzly Bear, Janaelle Monay, Mayer Hawthorne, Cults, Dead Prez, and Dan Deacon to
name a few. You should check out the times Union Center, The Egg, and Northern Lights--all
venues in the Albany who book amazing performers. I've personally seen Passion Pit
and Doctor Dog at Northern Lights which is only a 20 minute drive. The Saratoga Springs
Performing Arts Center (SPAC) is the summer home of the NYC Ballet, SPAC doesn't necessarily
book indie bands, think more A-List groups. Café Lena is your place for local artists
and poetry readings--it's located right in town. Always be on the look out for school
sponsered events, a lot of them would be right up your alley. |
| daphne -> Admissions_Matt
|
how can we stand out from other students applying? |
| Admissions_Matt -> daphne
|
Hello Daphne. Great question. We will receive about 6000 applications this year so
it's not an easy task. Try to make your application as personal as possible. That
can happen in your essay or in your letters of recommendation. The best way to strengthen
an application is to earn strong grades!! |
| Bolton -> Student_Abby
|
Is there any way you could paint a picture of the Skidmore community? (Student-teachers,
student-student, Skidmore-Saratoga) |
| Student_Abby -> Bolton
|
I've always found that Skidmore is a really accepting place. Students have a great
relationship with one another. We are lucky to have small class sizes at Skidmore,
so we are able to create great relationships with our professors, which is one of
the main reasons I came to Skidmore. In terms of Saratoga, it is a great town with
so much to do, and Skidmore students have a great relationship with the local business
owners - many of them have Skidmore nights where the food will be discounted, etc. |
| ingrid -> Student_Matt
|
How interactive are the students and teachers? I go to an extremely small high school
and would love to have the same personal relationships with my professors in college. |
| Student_Matt -> ingrid
|
Ingrid, I really like this question! This is DEFINITELY an experience you can have here. The
professors here do a lot, but they make students their first priority. Professors
offer office hours that can be a great chance to get to know your professor. I usually
contact my professors through emails, but almost half of my professors have given
me their phone numbers in case I have an important question. A lot of professors need
student helpers whether it is research or student teaching, and this can be a great
way to get to know your professors! I hope that helps! |
| daphne -> Student_Geoff
|
ive heard their is a stark division between the "artsy" people and "sporty" people?
is this true |
| Student_Geoff -> daphne
|
Daphne, unfortunately this is somewhat true. The athletes do tend to hang out with
the athletes, and the artsy people tend to hang out with the artsy people. However,
this doesn't mean that you can't hang out with an athlete if you're an art major,
or vice versa. Everybody that I have met at Skidmore has taken the time to get to
know me and see what I'm like as a person, instead of passing judgement on me because
I play a sport. I have a number of friends who might be considered "artsy", and have
no problem with hanging out with them. |
| JeremyJaico2 -> Student_Matt

What facility stands out the most on your campus and why? |
| Student_Matt -> JeremyJaico2
|
THE DINING HALL IS THE TAJ MAJAL OF SKIDMORE CAMPUS! |
| Alex -> Admissions_Sarah
|
I'm very interested in Skidmore College and have attended the information session
and tour but was unable to have an interview. Do you offer alumni interviews in the
Lenox MA area or should I call to schedule one on campus and drive over to Saratoga
again? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Alex
|
Hello Alex. Thanks for you question. We are really glad that Skidmore is very high
on your list. An interview is recommended but not required. It is a great way for
us to get to know you and for you to ask questions. We find out about your character
and more about how you might fit within our student body. On campus interviews are
more plentiful so if you can come to campus, feel free. Just call admissions and they
will set one up for you. If you cannot get here before January 15th, you may contact
admissions for an alumni interview. There is a place on the admissions website to
fill out a form to be connected with the coordinator. If you choose an alumni interview,
you will need to schedule it before January 1st. Good luck and we hope you will definitely
apply. |
| OxfordBrunette -> Admissions_Matt
|
Do you have financial aid available to international students? |
| Admissions_Matt -> OxfordBrunette
|
Yes - we do have some available but the budget for that aid is rather limited. That
means it's highly competitive. If you qualify for aid the package could be substantial
but it is competitive to qualify for it. |
| daphne -> Admissions_Sarah
|
when will applicants hear back for early decision |
| Admissions_Sarah -> daphne

Hello Daphne, Thank you for your question and we are glad that you are thinking about
early decision. The deadline to apply is November 15th and decisions will be mailed
by December 15th. Good luck! |
| Vicky -> Student_Chet
|
What are some ways that students keep themselves occupied outside of the college campus?
What community volunteer work is available to students ? |
| Student_Chet -> Vicky
|
Hi Vicky there are tons of ways to get involved outside of campus. BenefAction (a
community service club) is one of our largest clubs here on campus and they work primarily
with Saratoga Springs organizations such as hospitals and soup kitchens. I am also
a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saratoga Springs. There are tons of really
awesome bars and coffee shops in town--Saratoga Springs was actually one of the reasons
Skidmore Stood out to me. it has all the excitement of a city with the safety of a
small town. There is no shortage of things to do off campus. |
| Hallie -> Student_Abby
|
Does Skidmore have any Greek life? |
| Student_Abby -> Hallie
|
Hi Hallie! No, Skidmore does not have Greek life - and in fact, that was one of the
main reasons I came to Skidmore. Greek life just isn't for me, so I wanted to go to
a school that didn't have it. However, that doesn't mean there are a lack of things
to do on the weekends - there is always something to do. No matter what you are interested
in, every student will find something to do - our campus is always buzzing! |
| McKenna -> Admissions_Matt
|
How important are first semester grades for regular decision applicants? |
| Admissions_Matt -> McKenna
|
Hello McKenna. Your first semester grades are very important because they represent
your most recent work and how you do in the most advanced classes you'll take. Senior
grades are among the first items we consider when we review applications. |
| Hannah1 -> Student_Geoff
|
Do a lot of people study abroad? Can someone go abroad for more than the classic one
semester in Junior year? If there isn't an abroad program at Skidmore with a country
that I want to go, are there other ways to study abroad? |
| Student_Geoff -> Hannah1
|
Hannah1, there are a lot of people who study abroad at Skidmore. I think I saw a stat
that said about 57 percent of the student body goes abroad. Additionally, it is possible
to study abroad for more than a year, a friend of mine went to China for a year. And
if you want to go to a place that Skidmore doesn't offer, I think the abroad office
will help you find a way that you can go there. |
| Molly -> Student_Abby
|
Abby, What do you like the most about campus and what do you find the most challenging
in your majors? |
| Student_Abby -> Molly
|
Hi Molly! My favorite part about the campus is how beautiful it is - during the fall
the trees are filled with beautiful leaves, and people are always lying out on the
green hanging with friends, etc. In the winter, when we have snow, the campus looks
beautiful as well! In terms of what I find most challenging in my majors, its really
just time management. I've found that each year this is something I improve on - making
sure I don't leave everything to the last minute! :) But my advisors in my majors
are really great and help me in any way I need, and professors are widely available
to help in any way as well! |
| daphne -> Admissions_Matt
|
will a "C" in a class i am struggling with this year greatly affect my chances in
being accepted ED |
| Admissions_Matt -> daphne
|
Hello Daphne. Your most recent work is very important. We will look at the overall
four year record, but senior grades represent how you do in your most advanced classes.
See if you can raise that grade to a B! |
| McKenna -> Admissions_Sarah
|
I know that Skidmore values creativity, but I'm not a creative person, will that affect
my admissions decision? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> McKenna
|
Hello McKenna, Thank you for your question. Although Creative Thought Matters is a
slogan and a lifestyle here, not all people are creative regarding the arts. However,
thinking outside the box, critical thought and solving problems are always in the
fore front here. An appreciate for the arts is a great thing. Students of all walks
love it here. We find creativity in everything! |
| SweetCaroline -> Student_Chet
|
How many Skidmore students do community service, and what kind? |
| Student_Chet -> SweetCaroline
|
Hi there- Not sure about an exact number of students who participate in community
service however there are tons of ways to get involved outside of campus. BenefAction
(a community service club) is one of our largest clubs here on campus and they work
primarily with Saratoga Springs organizations such as hospitals and soup kitchens.
I am also a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saratoga Springs. There are also
tons of ways to get involved with envorinmental groups here on campus |
| GeoMom -> Student_Geoff
|
When we visited we were very impressed with your dining commons. Does the food taste
as good as the environment implies? Are there other eatery options on campus? |
| Student_Geoff -> GeoMom
|
GeoMom, I can assure you that the food does in fact taste as good as the environment
implies. As a senior, I no longer have the unlimited meal plan, but I still spend
as much time in the Dhall as I can afford. Furthermore, there is a cafe in Case Center
that has a deli and a grill. This is especially popular for lunch. |
| Jen -> Admissions_Matt
|
Do you compare early decision candidates to others who apply from the same high school? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Jen
|
Hello Jen. We don't compare applicants to each other when they come from the same
school. Rather we compare them against a profile we expect to come out of a particular
school. If two applicants meet those expectations, we will admit both. |
| Julie -> Admissions_Sarah
|
Does Skidmore consider the Common App arts supplement when reviewing applications? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Julie
|
Hello Julie. The art department will look at the CD art portfolio and it will be considered.
However, the academic work will have more weight. Arts supplement can only help the
application. Hope this helps! |
| vermontgirl -> Student_Abby
|
I was wondering what the dance major here is like? What kind of training/dancing is
taught and is it likely to come out with a job dancing professionally? |
| Student_Abby -> vermontgirl
|
Hi Vermontgirl. While I'm not a dance major myself, I have many friends that are dance
majors or minors. We specialize in Modern and Ballet, but each year, depending on
the visiting professors, we offer dance classes in different areas as well. You can
be at any skill level to be a dance major or minor - Intro to Dance is a very popular
class, and in fact, many students take that class and decide they want to continue
taking dance classes. And, we were recently ranked in the top 5 dance schools in the
country!! |
| Molly -> Admissions_Matt
|
Matt (admissions): My school goes by trimesters instead of quarters. Would Skidmore
look at just my grades from this first trimester or could they look at 1 and 2? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Molly
|
Hi Molly. It depends on timing. For ED applicants we typically make decisions with
just a first trimester. We sometimes see a second trimester for regular decision applicants. |
| OxfordBrunette -> Student_Matt
|
What kind of academic/career skills development opportunities are available to a Skidmore
student? I'm mainly referring to internships, fellowships, research opportunities
and such. How active is your careers department in helping students? |
| Student_Matt -> OxfordBrunette
|
This is a really great question OxfordBrunette. Your head is in the right place! The
career development center is really great. Right now I'm working with Meghan Jackson
on my resume, interview skills, and job hunting. I can't speak for every department,
but I know that most of the science departments employ one of the professors as a
internship coordinator. Over the years, the school has made great connections and
Skidmore helps you to connect very well. Also, research for student is so easy to
get involved with! I did research with the environmental studies department last summer
and that was a great experience to work directly with faculty!
Also, as far as careers, the career development center has events for students weekly
and you can start networking your freshmen year. |
| ChrisHerrmann -> Admissions_Sarah
|
Can you give me some info about the London Freshman program? Is it hard for the students
who come to campus in the middle of freshman year to become acclimated? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> ChrisHerrmann
|
Hi Chris. The London program is great. There are a couple of our tour guides who were
London freshmen and they loved it. There is a pre-orientation before the students
leave and then an orientation when they come home. It's a tight knit group of adventurous
students. Hope this helps! |
| Ian -> Admissions_Matt
|
About what range are you looking for in GPA for applicants? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Ian
|
We typically seek B+ to A- range of grades but the rigor of the course selection is
more important than the actual GPA. We would rather see a B in a tough class than
an A in an easier one. |
| ElizabethLL -> Student_Geoff
|
whats the dorm life like? the rooms arent that big, is that a problem? And if i have
a friend who also might be going to skidmore can I, as a freshman, ask to have them
as my roommate ? |
| Student_Geoff -> ElizabethLL
|
hey ElizabethLL, dorm life if fantastic. I don't live in the dorms anymore, but I
kind of miss it. All your friends live close, and there's pretty much an unspoken
open door policy amongst students living in the dorms. And I think you can request
roommates, however I'm not sure. |
| Julie_Toyloy -> Student_Matt
|
What was your orientation like for you? |
| Student_Matt -> Julie_Toyloy
|
I could write a short novel in response to this question, so I'll try to keep it brief.
Basically, they allow you to do a pre-orientation program and I chose to do that.
Basically we chilled, camped, and hung around a fire for three days. I still have
many close friends from that program. Orientation was very exciting. It is nothing
to be nervous about! |
| ingrid -> Admissions_Sarah
|
Hey everyone! My name is Ingrid, I'm a senior in New York City. Are the SAT scores
crucial for admittance? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> ingrid
|
Hi Ingrid. SATS or ACTS are required for admission but we will look more closely at
the academic classes and grades. Some applicants are great in class but not great
test takers. We find they would be terrific on our campus. Hope this helps! |
| Stephanie -> Admissions_Matt
|
Will my lack of extra curricular activities significantly hurt me in the admission
process? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Stephanie
|
Hello Stephanie. Extracurricular activities are one of a number of things we consider.
We certainly hope you're involved in something during your high school years. It doesn't
have to be a long list. It's very much quality over quantity in our process. Just
do 1 or 2 things well! |
| ees4910 -> Student_Geoff
|
Is it common for students to study abroad for two semesters, one in their sophomore
year and one in their junior year? |
| Student_Geoff -> ees4910
|
ees4910, I know that it is possible to study abroad for up to three semesters while
you're here. A friend of mine studied abroad for an entire year, so I think studying
abroad during your sophomore and junior year could definitely be done. |
| Molly -> Student_Abby
|
Abby: Right now I'm contemplating about majors. Since I was little, I have always
wanted to be involved with Studio Art, and I still do. However, since I transferred
high schools last year, I have been exposed to much more and would now like to study
optometry. I want to find a way to combine being some sort of eye doctor with art
therapy. Would you suggest double majoring? |
| Student_Abby -> Molly
|
Hi again Molly! Don't worry about being unsure - you don't have to know exactly what
you want to do yet, that's what college is for! Come in open minded, knowing what
you might be interested in, and take a variety of classes, and start to figure out
what the right path for you is. We have excellent professors that will help you in
the right path towards whatever you are interested in. Our Studio Art department here
is excellent, and even if you decided you weren't sure you wanted to major in Studio
Art, you could always be a Studio Art minor, or even just take a few art classes for
fun! And in terms of optometry, we have a great Health Professions Advisory Committee
(HPAC) at Skidmore that will help any student interested in health professions. |
| Molly -> Admissions_Matt
|
Matt (admissions): What is your average GPA that you'd look for on an applications? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Molly
|
We typically seek B+ to A- range of grades. However your course selection is more
important than your actual GPA. We want to see some advanced classes if they are offered
at your school. We would rather see a B in a tough class than an A in an easier one. |
| Jen -> Admissions_Sarah
|
Oops- Got cut off! If I have already submitted my ED application but was recently
awarded "Editor in Chief" of the Literary Magazine at my high school - would it be
wise to let Skidmore know officially about this? How would you suggest I do so - a
letter? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Jen
|
Hi Jen. Great work with being Editor in Chief. That is alot of work. You can send
an addition letter or email to the admissions email to let them know about the additions,
that would be fine. Hope this helps. Good luck with ED! |
| Rachel_S -> Student_Chet
|
Hi! I was wondering what your creative writing opportunities are? Specifically, whether
there are fiction, creative non-fiction, and playwriting classes available. Also,
is there a club that produces student-written work, with student actors who perform
it? |
| Student_Chet -> Rachel_S
|
Hi Rachel- The English department is one of our most prestigious departments here.
We offer one degree in English, however there are three concentrations to choose from
within that major/minor-Literature, non-fiction, and creative writing. There are plenty
of classes in creative non-fiction and play writing. While there is no play writing
major here specifically, a friend of mind is currently working on a self-determined
major in play writing. Skidmore is also home to the New York State Summer Writers
institute. We (students and faculty) also produce a nationally recognized literary
journal called SALAMAGUNDI. Finally we have Steven Millhauser a 2x Pulitzer Prize
winning author on faculty here. Hope that was helpful! |
| ingrid -> Student_Geoff
|
I'm interested in various different fields of study. Is there a program or a way that
students who are undecided can be guided through in order to decide on a major? |
| Student_Geoff -> ingrid
|
hey ingrid, I was undecided until the end of my sophomore year, when I declared my
government major. When you come in as a freshman, you will have a faculty advisor,
whom you will meet with regularly. You can talk with your advisor about your interests
and what you want to get out of college, and they will be able to help guide you towards
a major that suits your interests. |
| Natalya_Gioiella -> Student_Abby
|
Abby, what do you love most about Skidmore? |
| Student_Abby -> Natalya_Gioiella
|
Hi Natalya! I love so many things about Skidmore its hard to pick just one! I absolutely
love our location - Saratoga Springs has so much to do, which is always nice if you
want to walk around on a nice day with friends. And our campus is beautiful as well
- whether its because the leave are changing colors in the fall or because the green
is covered in snow in the winter! I also was really drawn to Skidmore because of the
small class sizes. I really wanted to go to a school where I would be able to create
a relationship with my professors, and that is something I have really taken advantage
of so far at Skidmore. |
| morganj -> Admissions_Sarah
|
How should I send in my Early decision agreement form? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> morganj
|
Hello Morgan. You may fax the ED agreement to Attn:Lynn DiMenna at 518-580-5584. It
will then be matched up with your application. You may also mail it to the admissions
office. Hope this helps! |
| morganj -> Admissions_Matt
|
Hi, last year I went on student exchange and now am having to play catch up in some
of my classes as a senior. Will the fact that I'm not at the highest level of classes
offered affect my chances of being accepted? |
| Admissions_Matt -> morganj
|
It will be a balance. We love it when our applicants do interesting and adventurous
things. We also place a lot of emphasis on the rigor of course selection. Make sure
your guidance counselor lets us know you are taking the most rigorous coursework you
can given your time abroad. |
| Natalya_Gioiella -> Student_Chet
|
How is the writing center at Skidmore? |
| Student_Chet -> Natalya_Gioiella
|
Hi Natayla- The writing center is an incredibly useful resource. There are tutors
for every subject here and they are well trained in a semester long academic class
to become tutors. Also professors ask that the writing center notify professors about
which students come for help so that professors can know who is working hard. It's
definitely an awesome resource to check out! |
| Julie -> Admissions_Sarah
|
What are Skidmore's most popular majors? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Julie
|
Hello Julie. Skidmore's most popular majors are Business, English, Psych, Studio Art,
Goverment, Bio and Foreign Language. Hope this helps! |
| Bolton -> Student_Matt
|
Is there any way you could paint a picture of the Skidmore community? (Student-teachers,
student-student, Skidmore-Saratoga) |
| Student_Matt -> Bolton
|
Unfortunately,their is no painting application on this program, and if there was it
wouldn't help much at all with my artistic background.
I will say, however, that overall this campus incredibly inclusive. Relationship between
students and teachers are what you make of it. You can develop great relationships
no doubt. Between students, everyone knows each other and respects one another. Saratoga
also respects Skidmore. Skidmore tries to give back to the community, as well. Right
now, my public health course is doing a service learning project, in which each group
is working with an organization in Saratoga! Opportunities like that are all over
at Skidmore. |
| Julie -> Admissions_Matt
|
Does Skidmore require subject tests? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Julie
|
Hello Julie. We do not require the subject tests. We use them mainly for placement
purposes for students who enroll with us. |
| Marilyn -> Student_Abby
|
Abbey, I read that you had an internship in Boston. How did you learn about that opportunity?
Did you learn about it on your own? Did Skidmore give you a list of contacts? Did
Skidmore set up the internship for you? |
| Student_Abby -> Marilyn
|
Hi Marilyn. I come from outside of Boston, so I was able to get that internship because
of connections I had close to home. However, there are many resources on campus to
help students search for internships. The departments will send out lists to the majors
of any opportunities in the area that might interest them, and in addition we have
a great Career Services center that will help students with all aspects of looking
for an internship or job. Also, the professors here are so great and are eager to
write students letters of recommendation - which I definitely took advantage of! |
| Zo -> Admissions_Matt
|
Does Skidmore super score SAT and/or ACT? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Zo
|
We super score the SAT but not the ACT. |
| Marilyn -> Panelist(s)
|
There are so many small, private, upstate, liberal arts colleges to explore. How does
Skidmore differentiate itself from the others? They all seem very similar to me. |
| EricaK -> Student_Geoff
|
What is Saratoga Springs like? |
| Student_Geoff -> EricaK
|
Hey EricaK, Saratoga Springs is one of my favorite cities in the world. There are
a number of great restaurants, places to go and things to do, and once you're old
enough, the nightlife is fantastic. Also, during the summer, the Horse Track turns
Saratoga into something unbelievable. I would highly recommend you take a trip to
Toga during the track season. Its amazing. |
| ChloeKeko18 -> Student_Chet
|
How would you describe your quintessential Skidmore student in 5 words? |
| Student_Chet -> ChloeKeko18
|
Chloe- well-informed, well-rounded, conscientious, intelligent, resourceful. I know
I cheated with the dashes! |
| ChloeKeko18 -> Admissions_Sarah
|
How would you describe your quintessential Skidmore student in 5 words? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> ChloeKeko18
|
Hi Chloe. Adventurous, engaged, multi-dimensional,focused, collaborative. Does this
describe you? :-) |
| Amanda -> Admissions_Matt
|
Will admissions decisions be posted online anywhere as well as mailed on the 15th? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Amanda
|
No. We send our decisions exclusively through regular US mail. |
| Bolton -> Admissions_Matt
|
If my resume does not fit on the Common Application, should I mail or email it in? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Bolton
|
Either way is fine. You can send it to admissions@skidmore.edu or just mail it to the Admissions office. |
| Sarah -> Admissions_Sarah
|
I saw the answer about two academic recommendations, but do you like/accept supplemental
recommendations too? (i.e. a coach) |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Sarah
|
Hi Sarah (nice name and spelled with an "h"!). Yes, you can submit supplementary recs
if you'd like. Not too many but if you have a coach who knows your character well,
it can always help. Feel free to send them by mail and we will match them up with
your application. Hope this helps! |
| Zo -> Student_Geoff
|
What percentage of students live on campus? Also, do many have cars? Are there accommodations
to cities nearby? |
| Student_Geoff -> Zo
|
Hey Zo, Most of the student body lives on campus. Freshmen and Sophomores are required
to live on campus, and upperclassmen have the choice to live either on or off. I spent
a semester off campus during my junior year, and then decided to move back on campus
for my senior year. I know live in the student apartments. A lot of students do have
cars, but you don't need to have a car by any means. I know you can take the train
to Albany, and I think there may be a bus that goes there too. |
| SweetCaroline -> Student_Abby
|
Do you have a French Club? Also, how easy is it to start a club? |
| Student_Abby -> SweetCaroline
|
Hi Caroline! We do have a French club - they're called French Connection! In terms
of starting your own club, its very easy to do! Last year, me and 2 of my friends
started a club on campus. You meet with various parts of our Student Government Association
(SGA) and a new club is born! |
| Natalya_Gioiella -> Admissions_Matt
|
Does Skidmore take ACTS and weigh them heavily and if you have attended Skidmore's
pre college program twice and loved it and have good grades. Would this help? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Natalya_Gioiella
|
We require either the SAT or ACT. We count the high school transcript much more. Yes
- doing well in our summer programs can certainly strengthen an application. |
| SweetCaroline -> Student_Abby
|
Do you have a debate team/club? |
| Student_Abby -> SweetCaroline
|
Hi again Caroline! We do not have a debate team/club, but as I just answered to you,
starting your own club is a really easy process! |
| Philip.Morabito -> Admissions_Sarah
|
What is a typical "first year experience" for a Skidmore student? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Philip.Morabito
|
Hi Philip. How are you? Great to see you on Live Chat! |
| daphne -> Student_Abby
|
can u still major or minor in dance coming in with no experiencE? |
| Student_Abby -> daphne
|
Hi daphne! Yup - you don't have to have any dance experience in order to be a dance
major or minor. Our Intro to Dance class is a very popular class, and many students
enjoy it so much that they continue on! |
| James -> Student_Chet
|
I've heard so many good things about Skidmore, it's almost hard to believe! What is
one negative aspect to being a student at Skidmore? |
| Student_Chet -> James
|
Hi James- That's a great question. One thing about Skidmore that people generally
love, but sometimes struggle with is the size of the student body. I love having small
classes with engaging discussions, close relationships with professors, and recognizing
familiar faces everyday. If you're looking for a larger feel, then Skidmore might
not be the right place for you. If you haven't yet come visit and get a feel for Skidmore,
see what you think! |
| dodgerfan -> Admissions_Matt
|
How important is the writing section of the ACT considered? Is the college essay given
more weight as a true indication of your writing ability? |
| Admissions_Matt -> dodgerfan
|
Hello dodgerfan. We don't place a lot of emphasis on writing sections of standardized
tests. We consider your high school English grades to be the best indicator of your
writing ability. |
| Destiny24 -> Admissions_Matt
|
Hi, I am Destiny from New York. I am applying to Skidmore. Are standardized test scores
required for submission? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Destiny24
|
Hello Destiny. Yes we require either an SAT or ACT from all applicants. |
| Austin_B. -> Student_Matt
|
What makes Skidmore's departments of chemistry and physics special? How do you integrate
the liberal arts into the hard sciences? I'm also very interested in the dual-degree
engineering program. It really seems like the perfect way to receive a world-class
humanities education and study engineering simultaneously. What's the percentage of
students admitted to this program? How are they split up between the different schools?
Thanks! |
| Student_Matt -> Austin_B.
|
Great question Austin. I would say that the technology within the sciences is top-notch
in comparison to other liberal arts colleges. At a liberal arts education, you really
get to work closely with your professors in small classes. As a science major, it
is great to have the opportunity to explore other topics of interest, and to really
apply and understand hollistically the importance of what you are studying in those
science classes.
As far as the dual-degree engineering program, I have heard that this is a really
spectacular program. Not many students have taken advantage of it in the past, but
it is a very prestigious program. |
| ingrid -> Student_Abby
|
I don't want to major in Theater, but I have always had a passion for acting! Is there
a theater club at Skidmore? |
| Student_Abby -> ingrid
|
Hi Ingrid! Even if you don't want to major in Theatre, you still have an opportunity
to take classes in the department if you want to! And, we have a bunch of ways to
be involved in theatre through clubs - we have Cabaret Troupe, as well as a handful
of comedy clubs, both sketch comedy and ad-lib groups! |
| James -> Student_Geoff
|
As a student, what has made your experience at Skidmore better (or worse) than at
another liberal arts college? |
| Student_Geoff -> James
|
Hey James, being on the baseball team has definitely enhanced my college experience.
Right away there was a group of people that I could hang out with, and I've been friends
with them ever since. It also added something for me to do. Most of the year, there
is something going with baseball, I've never really felt bored here. |
| Natalya_Gioiella -> Admissions_Sarah
|
I struggle in math but do well in all my other classes. Would this affect my chances
of trying to get into Skimdore? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Natalya_Gioiella
|
Hello Natalya. We will look at all aspects of the transcript and see how well balanced
you are. Not everyone can be strong in all areas. We will take into consideration
your math but also see how strong you are in other areas. Hope this helps! |
| Natalya_Gioiella -> Student_Abby
|
Hi Its Natalya. How is the musical theatre department at Skidmore? |
| Student_Abby -> Natalya_Gioiella
|
Hi Natalya. We don't have a musical theatre department at Skidmore, but our theatre
department is great! We also have a Cabaret Troupe that you can join! |
| ElizabethLL -> Admissions_Matt
|
*sorry, hey guy, I just got back from a semester in California, in my junior year
of high school. It was an art school and now that Im back in normal high school I
was told that might have not been a good idea. How does Skidmore look at this experience?
thanks! |
| Admissions_Matt -> ElizabethLL
|
Spending some time at an arts school is not a problem in of itself. We hope you will
still be able to take advanced classes during your senior year. |
| Hszor77 -> Student_Geoff
|
What are the most popular foreign exchange programs at Skidmore? |
| Student_Geoff -> Hszor77
|
Hey Hszor77, there are a number of Skidmore sponsored programs that usually attract
the most people. There's one in Paris, London, Madrid, and Beijing I think. However,
there are tons of other programs that Skidmore is connected with, or has approved,
and a lot of people choose these programs as well. |
| Zo -> Student_Chet
|
What percentage of students live on campus? Also, do many have cars? Are there accommodations
to cities nearby? |
| Student_Chet -> Zo
|
Hi Zo- 90% of students live on campus for all four years. Keep in mind that we have
two condominium-like complexes here on-campus so that doesn't mean just dorms. You
are allowed to have a car all four years on campus for about $100 a year. There is
a free bus every half hour to downtown Saratoga and the local shopping centers. |
| Molly -> Admissions_Matt
|
Matt (admissions): When I participated in the pre-college program, I took it for non
credit due to financial reasons. My mother and I didn't realize that meant that any
grades I might have gotten were not documented. We had an "unofficial transcript"
sent to us in the mail, but it had no grades on it, just lines of error symbols. Two
people from Skidmore wrote me letters of recommendation that they say should work
just as well. |
| Admissions_Matt -> Molly
|
Yes Molly. Letters from Skidmore faculty are very important. We take serious notice
when our own professors tell us applicants are strong and capable students. |
| Ian -> Admissions_Sarah
|
Just to clarify you will except either SAT or ACT? In other words both are not required? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Ian
|
Hello Ian. Both are not required. One or the other. |
| Lauren -> Student_Matt
|
How easy is it to switch majors? |
| Student_Matt -> Lauren
|
Lauren, I personally never had to switch majors, but I know from some friends that
have that it is not a challenge. The faculty are very accommodating, and you will
be able to speak to advisers about who to best approach the switch. Many students
don't establish their major until the end of their sophomore year, but it is always
best to get ahead! |
| ChloeKeko18 -> Student_Matt

| Natalya_Gioiella -> Student_Chet
|
Hello my Name is Natalya and I am a senior as well. In one word how would you describe
Skidmore? |
| Student_Chet -> Natalya_Gioiella
|
Hi Natyla- Engaging |
| leelala32 -> Admissions_Matt
|
How many AP classes are expected of students? From asking around, it seems like my
school has many APs. Last year I took one and this year I took four. Is that too little? |
| Admissions_Matt -> leelala32
|
A total of 5 APs is very good. We would not expect high school students to have any
more than that. That represents a highly rigorous program. |
| morganj -> Student_Abby
|
I've heard a lot about how closely the professors are with the students, especially
if they're struggling in the class. Can any of you share personal insight to this? |
| Student_Abby -> morganj
|
Hi Morgan! One of the main reasons I came to Skidmore is because I wanted to come
to a school where students had close relationships with their professors. Since coming
here, I have definitely found this to be true. Professors have multiple times set
aside each week called Office Hours where any student can go in to meet with them,
but they are also widely available for meetings outside of that time. So, if you have
any problems with a class, or just want some help with a specific assignment, professors
are widely available to help! |
| Hannah1 -> Admissions_Matt
|
Admissions: Will the fact that I am studying Korean with a tutor outside of school
and have been for about three years increase my chances at all (as far as extracurriculars
go)? And also, how important is volunteer/community service when you review an application? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Hannah1
|
Hello Hannah1. Studying Korean is an interesting activity and can certainly enhance
a resume. Community and volunteer work are also very important to us. Many Skidmore
students do comm. service here too! |
| Rozy -> Student_Geoff
|
I really like doing lots of different things--sports, art, theatre, and science. At
Skidmore, are students able to find a balance between varied interests--or do people
find themselves channeled into being only a "science-student" or a "studio artist"? |
| Student_Geoff -> Rozy
|
Hey Rozy, there is definitely no pressure on anybody to be channeled into anything
because of their desired major, or other interests. The liberal arts requirements
help you branch out and realize some other interests that you may never know you had.
I've heard of athletes majoring in studio art, and dancers majoring in Mathematics. |
| Marilyn -> Student_Abby
|
Do you have gender neutral housing? |
| Student_Abby -> Marilyn
|
Hi Marilyn. We have a gender neutral floor, which you can request to live on if you
wish. We also have gender neutral bathrooms in many of the buildings on campus. |
| deast -> Student_Geoff
|
Hi. How would you characterize the majority of the students at Skidmore? |
| Student_Geoff -> deast
|
Hey deast, most of the students are all pretty friendly. they will all take the time
to get to know you. |
| Jordyn -> Admissions_Matt
|
I'm joining this chat a little late so sorry if my question has already been asked.
How important are SAT scores for admission to Skidmore? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Jordyn
|
Hello Jordyn. SAT scores are important but FAR less important to us than the high
school record. We feel your transcript is a much better indicator of your academic
strength. |
| Hallie -> Student_Abby
|
As Skidmore students how did you transition into Brandeis from high school? Does Skidmore
help this transition, and how was your experience upon first entering Skidmore? |
| Student_Abby -> Hallie
|
Hi Hallie. I'm not sure I'm completely understanding your question, would you mind
rephrasing it and sending it again? Thanks :) |
| leelala32 -> Admissions_Sarah
|
What distinguishes Skidmore from other liberal arts colleges? Many schools have small
class sizes and good professor/student relationships. |
| Admissions_Sarah -> leelala32
|
Hi Leelala...I would say that the blend of Saratoga and Skidmore together set us apart.
The students are highly involved in campus life as well as town (internships, local
businesses, great restaurants, jobs, local music scene is amazing). Also, the fact
that you can double major in a science and an art and be an athlete-very cool. Most
students can double major. The study abroad is awesome. Over 60% travel internationally....overall...Saratoga
Springs. Amazing town. Hope this helps! |
| Marilyn -> Admissions_Matt
|
Do you have a blue light system? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Marilyn
|
Yes Marilyn - we do. We have blue light posts/phones throughout campus and our Campus
Safety average response time to a call is 60 seconds. We have an incredibly safe campus
and town! |
| OxfordBrunette -> Student_Matt
|
How is the alumni network? |
| Student_Matt -> OxfordBrunette
|
OxfordBrunette,
Well, I can specifically speak about the Alumni Adviser Network. This is a group of
4000-5000 alumni that have volunteered to speak and advise Skidmore students. I have
spoken to few already that live all over the US, and they have been extremely responsive
and helpful. |
| Natalya_Gioiella -> Student_Abby
|
Okay and could you tell me more about the Cabaret Troupe please |
| Student_Abby -> Natalya_Gioiella
|
Hi again Natalya. Here's the link to the page for Cabaret Troupe - they'll be able
to answer specific questions much better than I will! http://www.skidmoresga.org/clubs-a-committees/item/cabaret-troupe |
| daphne -> Admissions_Sarah
|
will an interview help my chances in getting in at all |
| Admissions_Sarah -> daphne
|
Hi Daphne. An interview can only help us get to know you a bit better. It is an easy
conversation that hopefully will you give you insight into Skidmore as well us a view
of your character and interpersonal skills. |
| Marilyn -> Student_Geoff
|
There are so many small, private, upstate, liberal arts colleges to explore. How does
Skidmore differentiate itself from the others? They all seem very similar to me. |
| Student_Geoff -> Marilyn
|
Hey Marilyn, one of the most attractive things that I found about Skidmore was Saratoga
Springs. It really is an amazing city, definitely a great place to live. Also, the
race track definitely adds a ton of character to the city, and I would definitely
recommend visiting Skidmore during the track season. You won't be disappointed! |
| SSloane -> Admissions_Matt
|
Will people who apply ED Round I be at more of an advantage than people who apply
ED Round II? |
| Admissions_Matt -> SSloane
|
No. The acceptance rates between the two rounds are typically very similar. |
| ingrid -> Admissions_Matt
|
Are there any specific requirements to be admitted in the London Program? |
| Admissions_Matt -> ingrid
|
No. We apply the same set of criteria. |
| deast -> Student_Chet
|
Hi. How would you characterize the majority of the students at Skidmore? |
| Student_Chet -> deast
|
Hi deast- We get that question a lot here. I would say that while it's easy to put
labels on any student body, Skidmore is all over the map. The college tries to be
as interdisciplinary as possible and this sentiment is reflected in the student body.
We have "atypical" students in the sense that there are students with tons of different
interests who all coexist respectfully. |
| Vicky -> Student_Abby
|
How is the food and what are the meal plans available? |
| Student_Abby -> Vicky
|
Hi Vicky! We are very lucky at Skidmore to have great food! In terms of meal plans,
if you live in the dorms, you are required to have an unlimited meal plans. As an
upperclassmen, if you live in our on-campus apartments or off-campus, there are various
levels of meal plans you can choose from. Here's the website if you would like more
specifics! http://cms.skidmore.edu/diningservice/meal-plan-options.cfm |
| Natalya_Gioiella -> Admissions_Sarah
|
What if you don't test well on standardized tests but you do well academically, have
a lot of extracurriculars and are a very hard working but devoted student and have
attended many summer programs, does this help at all or does Skidmore look at ACT
and SAT scores heavily? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Natalya_Gioiella
|
Hi Natalya. Please don't worry so much about the SATs. We look very heavily at your
academics and extracurriculars. Hard work and devotion will definitely help. We are
very holistic in our admissions approach. |
| Destiny24 -> Admissions_Matt
|
I am taking college credit courses. How easy are they to transfer? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Destiny24
|
College courses (on college transcripts) with grades of C or better typically transfer
into Skidmore degrees. |
| Molly -> Student_Matt
|
Matt: I attended the pre-college program at Skidmore this summer, and am applying
there for this fall. However, Do you think that I received enough taste of the school?
Do you think that I would now have a good enough idea of what it could be like as
a student there? |
| Student_Matt -> Molly
|
I lived here this past summer as well, and I would say that this is definitely a good
idea of what it is like. I'm sure you were exposed to Saratoga Springs, and for me
that is what Skidmore is all about! |
| ees4910 -> Student_Matt
|
Is it common for students to study abroad for two semesters, one in their sophomore
year and one in their junior year? |
| Student_Matt -> ees4910
|
You can study up to three semesters abroad. Not common, but it has been done! It definitely
can work if you want. |
| Vicky -> Student_Geoff
|
Do you have a Model United Nations club? |
| Student_Geoff -> Vicky
|
Hey Vicky, we don't have a model UN, however we do have a model EU. I've participated
in these types of simulations before, and they're pretty much the same thing. That
being said, I think there are efforts to start a model UN as well. If you have more
questions about this, I would suggest getting in contact with Professor Roy Ginsberg
in the Government department here. He's our resident EU scholar, and is very involved
with the simulations. |
| daphne -> Admissions_Matt
|
if you are not accepted ED will you still be considered for regular acceptance? |
| Admissions_Matt -> daphne
|
ED applicants who are not admitted are either deferred to regular decision or denied
right there. If you are denied, then there are no other opportunities to be admitted
later on. |
| McKenna -> Student_Abby
|
Do the dorms have community bathrooms? |
| Student_Abby -> McKenna
|
Hi McKenna! All our dorms (except for one) are suite style, which means that anywhere
between 4-8 students will share a bathroom. If you live in the dorm that has halls
as opposed to suites, it will still be about the same number of students sharing a
bathroom. All of our suites at Skidmore are single sex, so you will only share a bathroom
with members of the same sex. |
| Jordyn -> Admissions_Matt
|
I have heard several different percentages when it comes to male/female ratio at Skidmore,
for instance 30-70, 43-57, what is the real ratio? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Jordyn
|
The current ratio is 59% female and 41% male. |
| EddieA -> Admissions_Sarah
|
I am worried to see some people here asking about the amount of AP's they are taking
at their schools. I go to a private school in DC that does not offer AP's because
it has a very unique yet demanding curriculum that emphasizes experiential learning
while promoting creativity. (Sarah visited my school-frog territory- the recently).
Does skidmore does my schools curriculum into consideration, or am i at a disadvantage? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> EddieA
|
Hello Eddie! How are you? Thanks for the question. We will only compare your transcript
with what is offered at your school. Alot of schools don't offer APs or honors, but
we will see the strength of your program and balance of subjects. You are definitely
not at a disadvantage if your school doesn't offer APs. Don't worry. |
| Shasta -> Admissions_Matt
|
So I'm new to the whole college thing but I know for a fact I would like to attend
skidmore. My older brother delsean porter is a freshmen there and he's trying to prepare
me. But I haven't taken my act and sat and I just missed another deadline. What do
I do? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Shasta
|
Hello Shasta. You will have to submit either an SAT or ACT in order to be considered
for admission. |
| Vicky -> Student_Geoff
|
How is the study abroad program? |
| Student_Geoff -> Vicky
|
Vicky, study abroad programs will vary in the experience depending on the program.
However, I haven't heard of anybody having a bad time while studying abraod. |
| Philip.Morabito -> Admissions_Sarah
|
Admissions_Sarah: Hi Ms. Ireland! Great to see you on the chat too! I do have a question
about recommendations. I know you require two, but do you have a preference as to
which teachers they come from? (i.e. electives teachers, core academic class teachers,
etc.) |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Philip.Morabito
|
Hi again Philip! Thanks for participating! We would like your 2 academic recs to come
from either Math, Science, Foreign Language, English or History. Hope that helps!
:-) |
| Vicky -> Student_Matt
|
How is the pre-med program? |
| Student_Matt -> Vicky
|
Vicky, their is no "pre-med" program, specifically, but I am an exercise science major,
and of 22 exercise science students in my class year, there are 4 pre-med students.
There are also students from other majors that are pre-med. There is a pre-med club,
and there are also several pre-med specific advisers that can help you out. All pre-med
requirements are offered at Skidmore, so it is and definitely can be done. |
| Hallie -> Student_Abby
|
Sorry, I am just a little worried that it might be difficult to transition from the
high school workload I now have into a college work load, and I was wondering if you
experienced any difficulty when fist entering Skidmore? Do you think that the Freshman
seminars and requirements help to get you used to college classes? |
| Student_Abby -> Hallie
|
Hi again Hallie! Our Freshman Year Experience does a great job at transitioning students
from high school to college. Your seminar will be about 15 students, and you will
also have a peer mentor, who will be a Sophomore, Junior or Senior who will take the
class with you and help you in any way you might need! The professor that teaches
your Freshman Seminar will be your advisor until you declare your major, and they
are there not only to help you with the class but in general - whether you need help
picking classes, deciding what path you want to take, etc. I found that taking the
Freshman Seminar really helped me transition to college. Here is the link to the FYE
website if you want any specific information: http://cms.skidmore.edu/fye/index.cfm |
| Natalya_Gioiella -> Admissions_Matt
|
Is there much difference if you take 4 courses instead of 5 courses? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Natalya_Gioiella
|
All things considered, 5 would be better. We like to see a rigorous senior program
and 4 classes might look a little light to us. |
| EddieA -> Admissions_Sarah
|
I am great thanks for asking Sarah! Good to know im not automatically discarded due
to my lack of AP's. |
| Admissions_Sarah -> EddieA
|
Eddie, Good luck with your application!! |
| Natalya_Gioiella -> Student_Chet
|
What are some of the activities that Skidmore offers to students on the weekends? |
| Student_Chet -> Natalya_Gioiella
|
Skidmore offers tons of great activities on weekends. We have shows and performances
almost every weekend night. There are 6 a'capella groups here and 3 comedy troupes
along with tons of talented performers from on campus and beyond. There are also tons
of awesome shows in the area. |
| James -> Student_Matt
|
I've heard so many good things about Skidmore, it's almost hard to believe! What is
one negative aspect to being a student at Skidmore? |
| Student_Matt -> James
|
James! The one negative aspect about being a Skidmore student is that, at some point,
it has to end |
| Stephanie -> Admissions_Matt
|
I accidently sent my sat subject test scores which were not as high as I would have
liked. I did not record them on the common application. Will they be ignored or is
there a way to tell admissions to disregard them? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Stephanie
|
Hello Stephanie. It's too late to take them back, but we don't require subject tests
so don't worry too much about it. They do not play a big role in our process. |
| leelala32 -> Student_Abby
|
How does the unequal female/male ratio affect the college? |
| Student_Abby -> leelala32
|
Personally, I don't think the ratio affects the college - I barely notice it! The
ratio right now is 59%-41%, but its slowly becoming more equal! (Last year we were
60-40) In fact, my freshman year seminar was 11 boys and 5 girls, so its not like
every class is overwhelmingly female! Hope that helps! |
| leelala32 -> Admissions_Sarah
|
How strongly are interviews recommended? Can they count against you? How does the
interviewing process work? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> leelala32
|
Leelala...interviews are recommended and most likely will not hurt you unless you
choose not to engage with the interviewer. Be yourself, let us get to know you. You
should call admissions to schedule an interview. |
| Shasta_1 -> Admissions_Matt
|
Can I still apply? I get tons of letters and emails and I would really like to be
at skidmore next year? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Shasta_1
|
Yes - there is still time to apply. Our ED deadline is November 15 and our regular
decision date is not until January 15. |
| Hszor77 -> Student_Chet
|
Thanks! What are some of the best ways to take part in community service on and off
campus? |
| Student_Chet -> Hszor77
|
Hi Hszor77- BenefAction (a community service club) is one of our largest clubs here
on campus and they work primarily with Saratoga Springs organizations such as hospitals
and soup kitchens. I am also a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saratoga Springs.
There are also tons of ways to get involved with envorinmental groups here on campus |
| Ian -> Student_Abby
|
Are first year Freshman allowed to have their cars on campus? I know a few colleges
have a rule against it. |
| Student_Abby -> Ian
|
Hi Ian. You are allowed to have a car all 4 years! |
| Vicky -> Admissions_Sarah
|
How are students that come from struggling High School's viewed differently compared
to those students that come from more vigorous High Schools? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Vicky
|
Hi Vicky, we will take into consideration the strength of your high school and will
not penalize you based on it's strength or weaknesses. However, you will likely have
to show us that you are a good strong student with what is offered at your HS. Hope
this helps..... |
| Amanda -> Student_Abby
|
I ride horses but don't want to ride competitively in college, will I be able to ride
just for fun at Skidmore? |
| Student_Abby -> Amanda
|
Hi Amanda! We offer riding classes that anyone can take, so if you want to just ride
for fun you can even get credit for it! |
| EddieA -> Student_Chet
|
Hi, i am very much interested in Skidmore and have been wondering if current students
suggest applying ED. If i were to apply regular decision, does Skidmore value those
applications less? |
| Student_Chet -> EddieA
|
Hi EddieA- That's a great question.
Good luck! |
| Liz -> Student_Matt
|
I would love to keep playing sports in college. Do I have to be an amazing athlete
or can I just be moderately good? |
| Student_Matt -> Liz
|
Liz, the athletics are great, and very competitive, but there are definitely a very
of skill sets! Don't be afraid to contact the coach. They love to meet new athletes
and come see you play! Definitely, definitely do that. |
| BenK -> Admissions_Matt
|
My high school has limited class availability and was unable to get into the classes
I wanted/needed. As a result,I could only take 1 AP class last year(junior year) and
am taking 2 APs this year (my senior year) I could not get into a 3rd AP this year
without sacrificing other classes that I needed. Anyway, would you recommend that
I just take an AP test without taking the class (in a subject I feel strong in)? I'm
worried that 3 APs might not be enough for my transcript. |
| Admissions_Matt -> BenK
|
Hello BenK. You probably don't need to take that AP exam without taking the course.
We wouldn't see that exam score until after we make decisions anyway. Just make sure
your guidance counselor lets us know you tried to get into more AP classes. I think
your schedule will look ok to us as is. |
| leelala32 -> Admissions_Matt
|
I took the SAT twice. I did better in every section the second time I took it. I only
sent in my second set of scores. Is that bad? |
| Admissions_Matt -> leelala32
|
Not a problem. We superscore (find the highest section scores) anyway. |
| Jordyn -> Admissions_Sarah
|
I am planning on applying ED and I selected to be considered for both the first semester
at Skidmore and the semester in London. Does this hurt my chances of getting accepted
into the program in London? I would rather be accepted to Skidmore on campus, than
not be accepted at all. Which is why I chose to be considered for both. |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Jordyn
|
Hi Jordyn. If you check "Both" on the supplement, and you are admitted to Skidmore,
you will then have the option to enroll for London. It doesn't hurt your chance as
you will get to choose which program you prefer as of May 1. |
| PrithviBatra19 -> Student_Abby
|
What is the international student population at skidmore |
| Student_Abby -> PrithviBatra19
|
Hi there! Every year, the number of international students grows! In the class of
2016, I think there are about 60 international students! There is a great club, open
to everyone (not just international students!) called the International Student Union
(ISU)! Here's the link to their page http://www.skidmoresga.org/clubs-a-committees/item/international-student-union |
| phiabird -> Admissions_Matt
|
Is it harder to receive financial aid if you apply early decision? |
| Admissions_Matt -> phiabird
|
No. Early and Regular decision applicants receive the same aid packages. Both are
based on family need. |
| Shasta_1 -> Admissions_Matt
|
Ok well what about my act and sat scores? Could I just send them to you? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Shasta_1
|
Yes - please send them along. |
| Talia -> Student_Chet
|
Is social life mostly on or off campus? |
| Student_Chet -> Talia
|
Hi Talia- I'm assuming you're referring to weekend life so I would say that there
is a good mix of both. Skidmore offers shows and entertainment virtually every single
weekend night. In addition there are always gatherings at upper classman's homes on
weekends. The variety of activites here is one of my favorite things about Skidmore. |
| Jennifer -> Admissions_Sarah
|
My school does offer honors, but due to many family issues I truly was not able to
handle such. I had a personal interview where I explained my circumstances and it
is incorporated in my application essay. Will this be considered when reviewing my
application? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Jennifer
|
Jennifer, yes, we will consider what you are doing outside the classroom as well.
It is part of looking at the complete student. |
| daphne -> Student_Abby
|
i remember hearing that freshmen couldn't have cars the first year while touring the
school? this isnt true/ |
| Student_Abby -> daphne
|
Hi Daphne! Whoever told you that was mistaken, Skidmore students are allowed to have
a car all 4 years! |
| phxo -> Admissions_Matt
|
Hi, my name is Phoenixia. I was wondering if therre is a huge difference in acceptance
rate between someone applying ED and someone applying regular? |
| Admissions_Matt -> phxo
|
It is always somewhat easier to get in ED. ED numbers are so much smaller than Regular
Decision so it is subject to large acceptance rate changes each year. |
| Talia -> Admissions_Matt
|
Does a dual curriculum high school impressive in admissions? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Talia
|
Yes - we understand a dual curriculum requires a lot of work. |
| ingrid -> Admissions_Sarah
|
How exactly does super scoring work? I did better on my second time taking SATs. Will
I be able to submit my second and third time scores and still have it super scored?
Or do I have to submit all three? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> ingrid
|
Hi Ingrid. Superscore works if you submit all of your SATs, we will take the highest
Critical Reading, the highest Math and the highest Writing scores. You can choose
which test dates to submit. |
| EddieA -> Admissions_Matt
|
Hi, i am very much interested in Skidmore and have been wondering if current students
suggest applying ED. If i were to apply regular decision, does Skidmore value those
applications less? |
| Admissions_Matt -> EddieA
|
We do not value a regular decision application any less. The ED acceptance rate is
always higher. |
| Amanda -> Admissions_Sarah
|
I have almost all B+'s and A's on my transcript, but I have one C- in precalculus
honors. I'm taking AP calc now and I have a B, will this one bad grade affect my decision
significantly? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Amanda
|
Hello Amanda. Great job on the B in AP Calc. We will look at your improvement in math
this year. Good work. Keep it up! |
| Talia -> Student_Abby
|
I'm interested in astronomy or astrophysics. Do any of you know anything about those
programs? Can you tell me something interesting about them? |
| Student_Abby -> Talia
|
Hi Talia! We do not have an astronomy major, but we do offer various astronomy classes
which I have heard are very interesting! We have a great physics department if you
are interested in that field of science. There are also opportunities to work with
professors and create a self-determined major. The sciences at Skidmore are very strong
- here's the link to the Science Webpage for more specifics! http://cms.skidmore.edu/science/study.cfm |
| Marilyn -> Student_Geoff
|
Geoff, track season and school semesters are at different times. How does the race
track add to the quality of a Skidmore education? |
| Student_Geoff -> Marilyn
|
Marilyn, as far as the small liberal arts schools go, the education is going to be
fairly equal and similar. My point was that there is a lot more to Skidmore besides
the education. Saratoga provides a unique environment for students to get away from
their studies for a bit. While the track season isn't during school, the city is very
ingrained with the horse culture. This can range from horse statues on the sidewalk,
to restaurants and bars being named after famous horses. Our school mascot is the
Thoroughbred. Personally, I enjoy going into town to blow of steam and forget about
school for a while. This is why I think Saratoga's important. When I was looking at
the same small liberal arts schools, I tried to really get a feel of the town and
the area that the school was located in, because I was hoping to get a lot more out
of my college experience than an education. |
| phxo -> Admissions_Matt
|
Thanks, Matt!! |
| Admissions_Matt -> phxo
|
You bet. |
| Vicky -> Student_Chet
|
What jobs have alumni that graduated been able to acquire? |
| Student_Chet -> Vicky
|
Hi Vicky- One of my friends from the class of 2012 is working as a paralegal in NYC,
another is a financial analyst at Merril Lynch in NYC and another is a financial analyst
in Boston. In addition to those three, I know alums who are working as medical interns,
teachers and at advertising agencies. These are just some people I know personally,
however there are plenty of people who go to a diverse range of career choices. |
| ChloeKeko18 -> Admissions_Matt
|
do you look at extenuating circumstances? |
| Admissions_Matt -> ChloeKeko18
|
We certainly do. Please feel free to explain anything in a separate letter to us. |
| Julie_Toy -> Admissions_Matt
|
My counselor is having trouble with her secondary supplement. She is not able to upload
my transcript because it says the file is too big. I sent a transcript by mail. So
on her online secondary form can we put an explanation of the situation in a word
document and upload it in the spot of the transcript form. So then she can submit
my form? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Julie_Toy
|
Yes - that will be fine. |
| Vicky -> Student_Geoff
|
What jobs have alumni that graduated been able to acquire? |
| Student_Geoff -> Vicky
|
Hey Vicky, 80 percent of graduates are employed within 5 years of graduating, and
19 are in graduate school. A friend of mine who graduated last year was able to find
an excellent job immediately after graduation. I think he's doing some consulting
for a health care software firm. |
| Shasta_1 -> Admissions_Matt
|
And would it help that I have international baccalaureate credits? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Shasta_1
|
Yes - IB credits are important and we grant credit for a 5, 6 or 7 on HL exams. |
| Talia -> Student_Abby
|
Is Skidmore stronger in the sciences or the humanities? |
| Student_Abby -> Talia
|
Hey Talia! Skidmore is strong in both areas! We offer great classes in both fields!
In fact, one of my best friends is a Government major but is also Pre-Med, so he takes
many science classes as well as Government classes, and he still can't decide which
field he wants to go into because he has enjoyed all his classes thus far! Skidmore
has great opportunities no matter what you are interested in! |
| Rozy -> Student_Matt
|
I really like doing lots of different things--sports, art, theatre, and science. At
Skidmore, are students able to find a balance between varied interests--or do people
find themselves channeled into being only a "science-student" or a "studio artist"? |
| Student_Matt -> Rozy
|
Well Rozy, I would answer that question with a few examples of friends that I have.
My good friend, Greg, is on the swim team, is a business major, and an art minor.
Another friend of mine is on the baseball team and is currently studying abroad in
China. There are tons more students like that! |
| phiabird -> Admissions_Matt
|
is there anything in particular that i can include in my application that will help
me get in to Skidmore (particularly to be involved in the music program). I already
know about the filene scholarship but i was wondering if there is anything else i
can do |
| Admissions_Matt -> phiabird
|
We don't admit by major so don't feel like you need to send in anything extra with
music. |
| Hszor77 -> Admissions_Sarah
|
What are the most popular foreign exchange programs at Skidmore? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Hszor77
|
The most popular are Paris, London, Australia, Spain, Italy |
| Vicky -> Student_Geoff
|
How are the relationships between the students? Is there any prejudice ? |
| Student_Geoff -> Vicky
|
Vicky, the relationships between students has always been great while I've been here.
Everybody is friendly, and will take the time to get to know you. I've never had a
problem with anybody that I've met here. |
| Natalya_Gioiella -> Admissions_Matt
|
Would you say that it is difficult getting into Skidmore? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Natalya_Gioiella
|
Skidmore Admissions has become more competitive over the years. Our acceptance rate
was 41% last year and we anticipate that number dropping a bit this year. |
| Talia -> Admissions_Matt
|
Why doesn't Skidmore have a supplement? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Talia
|
We do have a Supplement. It's a 1 page document with no essay questions. |
| Molly -> Admissions_Sarah
|
Sarah: Does Skidmore do first-year study abroad? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Molly
|
Hi Molly, Yes there is a first year in London program. First semester abroad. The
supplement has a box you can check if you are interested in being considered for it. |
| Talia -> Student_Chet
|
Does Skidmore and its students have a relationship with Saratoga Springs? |
| Student_Chet -> Talia
|
Hi Talia, there is definitely a relationship with the communities of Saratoga and
Skidmore. There are tons of great deals for Skidmore kids at local restaurants and
sporting events are usually filled with people from Greater Saratoga Springs area. |
| Jennifer -> Admissions_Matt
|
Do you compare greatly two ED applicants from one high school? (Another from my school
is EDing - same major) |
| Admissions_Matt -> Jennifer
|
No. We will not compare you against each other. Rather we will compare you both against
a profile we expect to see from your school. If you are both strong applicants we
could admit you both. |
| leelala32 -> Admissions_Sarah
|
What other colleges do many Skidmore applicants also apply to? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> leelala32
|
Other colleges are Vassar, UVM, Colgate, Union, Conn College, Hamilton |
| Joe -> Student_Matt
|
I am currently playing a varsity sport, in jazz and concert band and maintaining pretty
decent grades. How difficult will it be to do all three if I'm accepted to Skidmore? |
| Student_Matt -> Joe
|
Joe, as a very involved person, I'm sure that you have learned some great time management
skills. I play a varsity sport, and have and on-campus job. I'm sure you can manage
it, it will just take planning! |
| Skidmore -> Everyone
|
Great questions everyone! We hope you are enjoying the live chat but we are nearing
the end of our discussion. This is the last call for questions! |
| ElizabethLL -> Student_Abby
|
whats the dorm life like? the rooms arent that big, is that a problem? And if i have
a friend who also might be going to skidmore can I, as a freshman, ask to have them
as my roommate ? |
| Student_Abby -> ElizabethLL
|
Hi Elizabeth! I actually think we are lucky to have great dorms at Skidmore - in my
opinion, our rooms are big! As a freshman I was in a triple and I found that there
was plenty of room for all of us to have our own space - even if you're like me and
pack everything you own! :) In terms of choosing a roommate, as a freshman, all roommates
are randomly selected based off of a survey you fill out over the summer. So, while
you won't be able to room with your friend, it will be great to have a familiar face
starting college! As a sophomore, you can elect to live in a double if you wish, and
then are able to choose your roommate! |
| ingrid -> Student_Chet
|
I have always lived in New York City and am used to a diverse environment. I'm really
interested in the diversity of the campus. Can someone please let me know about it? |
| Student_Chet -> ingrid
|
Hi ingrid- I was born in NYC as well and I do have to say that since it's one of the
most diverse places in the world, very few places on earth compare. I have been pleased
with diversity here, there is an incredible mix of people and ideas here. |
| Hallie -> Student_Geoff
|
Does Skidmore have a good study abroad program? And have you guys had good experiences
if you have been on these study abroad programs? |
| Student_Geoff -> Hallie
|
Hey Hallie, the study abroad programs through Skidmore are great. There are a number
from which to choose from, and if you can't find one that you like, you can go outside
of Skidmore and get it approved. Personally, I really enjoyed my semester in Germany,
it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I would definitely recommend
going somewhere. |
| ChloeKeko18 -> Admissions_Sarah
|
I submitted my ED agreement on the common app - should I fax it in as well, or is
that sufficient? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> ChloeKeko18
|
Hi Chloe. Submitting it through the common app is fine. No need to fax it as well.
Good luck with your ED application. |
| Eloise -> Student_Abby
|
What is the percentage of students that study abroad during their time at Skidmore? |
| Student_Abby -> Eloise
|
Hi Eloise! 60% of Skidmore students study abroad! |
| JCho96 -> Admissions_Matt
|
Do transfer students receive a significant amount of less financial aid than regular
students at Skidmore? I've read that there is only a 'limited' amount of aid available. |
| Admissions_Matt -> JCho96
|
It is more competitive to qualify for transfer aid but transfer aid packages are not
smaller than freshman aid packages. We meet full financial need for all admitted students
- freshmen and transfers. |
| Talia -> Student_Geoff
|
Are students typically more liberal or conservative? |
| Student_Geoff -> Talia
|
Hey Talia, students at Skidmore tend to be much more liberal than conservative. That
being said, I do know a number of conservatives on campus as well |
| Julie_Toy -> Admissions_Matt
|
Mr. Matt does Skidmore offer work study and how does that work? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Julie_Toy
|
Yes - work study can be incorporated into aid packages and typically add up to about
$2000 per year. |
| James -> Student_Abby
|
I've heard so many good things about Skidmore, it's almost hard to believe! What is
one negative aspect to being a student at Skidmore? |
| Student_Abby -> James
|
Hi James! For me, a negative aspect would be the weather! It was 30 degrees today,
and we heard its going to snow overnight - I'm not ready for that yet!! But the campus
does look beautiful when it is covered in snow. |
| daphne -> Student_Matt
|
are their any culinary opportunities for students? |
| Student_Matt -> daphne
|
Daphne, opportunities will arise on occasion. Actually, last year I organized a cooking
class with ease. If you were to come to Skidmore, I think it would be a really fun
thing for you to get involved with the some of the food groups, who have great funding,
and organize some chefs from town to teach culinary programs. This is very doable! |
| Eloise -> Admissions_Matt
|
Is it possible to send SAT scores through your high school guidance office rather
than through collegeboard? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Eloise
|
Yes - we consider SAT scores sent from high schools to be official. |

Sarah- Do you have to supply for first year abroad, or do you just check off if you
would like to go? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Molly
|
Hi Molly. You need to be 18 by August 24th (check the date on the supp). That is the
only thing you will need to do. Then our committee will look at all the applications
of students who check that box. The first 36 students who send in their London enrollment
form are the London 36. |

|
Sarah: Are only certain majors applicable for first -year study abroad? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Molly
|
All majors are applicable. However, there are more humanities offered in London than
sciences.... |

I know this question has been tossed around but now that i know Skidmore has such
an amazing campus (visited over the summer)as well as having a slew of incredible
opportunities, i want to really get an idea of how the students are. My high school
is very small so Skidmore's size is intriguing, however, i want to feel certain that
i will find people that i can become friends with knowing that this challenge hasn't
been so easy at my tiny school. Are people generally more artsy or athletic or is
it really a melting pot of people interested in a wide-range of activities? I've been
to schools where students are so introverted that social life seems to be extraterrestrial
as well as schools where it seems sports are the only focus. |
| Student_Chet -> EddieA
|
Hi EddieA- I too am from a small school so Skidmore's student body actually feels
pretty large to me. Skidmore is one the friendliest places I've ever been to so I
wouldn't worry about making friends! Also, we were just rated as the ninth happiest
school in the country by US News and World Report! http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/galleries/2012/08/05/college-rankings-2012-25-happiest-schools-photos.html#slide_9 |

Correction: Why doesn't Skidmore have a supplemental essay? |
| Admissions_Matt -> Talia
|
We removed the essays this year because over the years we have heard that students
have become overly burdened with extra essays and that it felt like separately applying
to each college. |

Hi everyone, we are no longer taking any questions. Our panelists will answer the
questions that have already been submitted, so stay tuned if you're question hasn't
been answered yet! |
| Hallie -> Student_Abby
|
What do you guys think of suite life overall? |
| Student_Abby -> Hallie
|
Hi Hallie! I loved living in a suite! It meant that you automatically got to meet
a bunch of people right away, and because the suites are mixed between freshman and
sophomores (and sometimes juniors and seniors as well) its an opportunity to meet
people who have already experienced time at Skidmore! |

app? |

|
Is Skidmore stronger in the sciences or the humanities? |
| Student_Matt -> Talia
|
I think we are very strong in both! I am an exercise science student and to my right
is Geoff, a very intelligent Government major. |

How often do you go into Albany or New York City? |

Hi Talia- There are tons of awesome shows in Albany and there is an AmTrack rail to
NYC many times daily. I personally have taken advantage of both cities. |

Hello! Would someone please describe what the International Relations major is like
in a little more detail? |
| Student_Geoff -> OliviaT
|
Hey OliciaT, the International Affairs major at Skidmore is one of the most unique
majors here. It really focuses on developing a very rounded education, with requirements
from the Economic, Cultural, Governmental, and Environmental spheres, all with an
international focus. There is a strong emphasis on writing, as well as a language
requirement to the 206 level. Most of the courses you will take are in other departments,
as there is no International Affairs department at Skidmore. I have really enjoyed
it, and think it will help me in my career, whatever that may be. |

Abby, How small do the class sizes range? I loved Skidmore when I was there for two
summers and a few of my friends attend Skidmore as well. But what I was also wondering
was what are some of Skidmore's most popular minors? |
| Student_Abby -> Natalya_Gioiella
|
Hi Natalya! Some of the top majors are English, Psychology, Studio Art, Business and
Management, Government and Biology. Almost every major has a corresponding minor,
so I hope that helps! Classes really do range in size, it definitely depends on the
department. As you get to the higher level classes, they will get smaller and smaller
- I've heard of classes being 5 students! But typically, classes will be about 10-25
students. |

How do you apply to the freshman London program? Is it part of the Skidmore application
supplement? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> BenK
|
Hi Ben. On our supplement there is a link to the London program. If you are interested
in it, check the "both" box. Then if you are admitted, you will have the choice of
Saratoga or London for the first semester. Hope this helps! Good luck! |
| OxfordBrunette -> Student_Geoff
|
How vibrant is campus life? Do Skidmore students have a lot of school spirit? |
| Student_Geoff -> OxfordBrunette
|
Hey OxfordBrunette, as a student athlete here, there isn't as much school spirit as
I would like. There are really not that many people that come to our games, but I
feel like every athlete any where will say the same thing |
| Molly -> Student_Abby
|
Abby: This summer I attended the pre-college program t Skidmore and loved it. Do you
think that the pre-college program can give a high school student a thorough enough
taste of what Skidmore is about? The entire time, I clicked very well with my classes
and the facilities, although I'm still worried about time management. With my transferring
which I've noted before, my time management has improved--A girl in one of my classes
(who goes to Skidmore) said she doesn't sleep due to all her work. She told me she
just doesn't sleep anymore. Is this something I should look out for?... |
| Student_Abby -> Molly
|
Hi Molly! I don't know who you know at Skidmore, but I've never pulled an all-nighter
here, and I'm a double major! The Freshman Year Experience (FYE) does a great job
at transitioning students into Skidmore, so that you are able to manage time accordingly.
I'm glad you loved Skidmore so much, I love it! |
| Caroline_Hale -> Student_Abby
|
Hi! I visited Skidmore last spring and was blown away by the school and all it had
to offer. I would love to major in theatre here, and I was wondering if auditions
were required or recommended as a freshman applicant? |
| Student_Abby -> Caroline_Hale
|
Hi Caroline! Anyone can be a theatre major - there are no auditions required! |
| Talia -> Student_Geoff
|
Are students politically active? Or are politics not really a topic of discussion? |
| Student_Geoff -> Talia
|
Most students are politically active, or at least aware. I feel like every time I
go into the dining hall, there is some organization lobbying me for a signature, or
passing out information. I personally am not involved with any student organizations,
I've never really had the time, however, if you're interested in this, there is definitely
an opportunity somewhere. |
| Student_Abby -> Everyone

Thanks for your great questions guys - hope our answers helped! Good luck with the
college process! :) |
| Stephanie -> Admissions_Sarah
|
Does not applying for financial aid help my chance of admission? |
| Admissions_Sarah -> Stephanie
|
Hi Stephanie. There are two rounds of admission for Skidmore. One is academic and
one is financial aid. Financial aid is limited and we cannot accept everyone who needs
aid, unfortunately. I hope this helps. Good luck |
