Campus
Located at the northwest edge of Saratoga Springs, just over two kilometers from the city's downtown, Skidmore's beautiful 890-acre campus encompasses approximately 50 buildings designed and arranged to blend with the wooded surroundings and to foster intellectual and social interaction. Though the buildings are contemporary in style, the campus architects have borrowed from the area's well-known Victorian architecture, adopting such features as bay windows, copper roofs, and covered outdoor areas.
Of particular note for students are the Scribner Library; the Dana Science center with its sweeping glass front, three story-atrium, and state of the art teaching and research space; and Case Center, with offices for student organizations, an intercultural center, the Skidmore Shop, a snack bar, and the cyber cafe.
First-year students are housed in eight residence halls, with populations ranging from 135 to 270 students. Residence halls are coeducational and are supervised by a network of professional administrators and upper-class students.
Location
Saratoga Springs, a city of 30,000, lies in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, approximately a three-hour drive from New York City, Boston, and Montreal. Albany, New York State's capital, is 50 kilometers south and is home to the Albany International Airport, a 30-minute drive from the Skidmore campus.
Saratoga Springs is perennially listed as one of the most interesting and vibrant small cities in the US. With a fascinating history, delightfully walkable downtown (two kilometers from campus), charming coffee shops and bistros, national and local retailers, eclectic night spots, four-star restaurants and modest neighborhood cafes, and arguable the worlds most beautiful and historic thoroughbred racetrack, Saratoga has it all. And there's also the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, site of the top jazz, classical, and pop performances. The Adirondacks provide hiking and mountain climbing, white-water rafting and kayaking, downhill and cross-country skiing, and mountain biking—all within an hours drive of campus. Vermont and its famous ski areas are less than two hours' drive.
Weather
Average annual temperatures are 14 degrees Celsius for the high and 2 degrees Celsius for the low. July is the warmest month and December the coldest. Winter temperatures often fall below freezing. Average rainfall is 84 centimeters per year, with April, June, and September being the rainiest months. Average snowfall is 142 centimeters per year, with the heaviest amounts in January and February.
