Skidmore Admissions: Welcome to the Skidmore College Admissions Live Chat! We will begin shortly. If you'd like to submit a question, please do so at any time and we will respond during the session.

Before we begin, we'll have the panelists introduce themselves.

Ken_Admissions: Hello - thanks for joining us tonight. My name is Ken Dunbar, Associate Director of Admissions and Skidmore Class of 2000... I have been associated with Skidmore since 1996.

Teshika_Admissions:  Hello everyone! My name is Teshika Hatch, Assistant Director of Admissions. I'm originally from Seattle, WA and am a 2011 graduate of Skidmore College. While at Skidmore I was a Sociology-Psychology major with an International Affairs minor.

Altagracia_Student:  HELLO !! My name is Altagracia Montilla. I am a senior Psychology Major/Religious Studies Minor from New York City.

Aaron_Student:  Hi Guys, my name is Aaron and I am a senior here at Skidmore. After a long decision process I declared a double major in Music and Psychology. I am involved in a huge amount of music ensembles, I am a DJ on the campus radio, and I'm a head tour guide!

Beth_FinancialAid: Hi, I am Beth Post-Lundquist, Director of Financial Aid. Happy to help with your financial aid questions!

OreAdelaja:  Hey, I was wondering what's the average GPA that you accept? In addition, is the surrounding town a college town or more suburban?

Ken_Admissions:  The average GPA depends on where you go to school and your academic program, so it is hard to say. Generally speaking students with As and Bs on their transcripts do the best here. As for the town, it is a small upstate NY city that has a vibrant downtown and a bustling college town atmosphere.

LissetteDuran: What are the requirements for a scholarship?

Beth_FinancialAid: Hi! Skidmore's financial aid is 99% need-based. We require the College Board's PROFILE financial aid application in order to determine a student's eligibility for grant assistance. We do have two non-need based scholarships, the Filene Music Scholarship (culminating in a competition) and the Porter Math/Science scholarship, recipients are selected by a faculty committee.

Michael: What are the main things I should have to be accepted in Skidmore? The qualifications.

Teshika_Admissions: At the Admissions office, we look at you holistically and want to know all about who you are -- academically, socially, extracurricularly. The most important part of your application is your high school transcript; we want to see what types of classes you have taken and how you have done in those classes. It is important to think about the depth and rigor of your courses. We also look for students who have taken 4 years of the 5 major academic areas.

GavinFregeau: I'm sure it's easy to give your favourite thing about Skidmore, but what is your least favourite thing?

Aaron_Student:  Great question Gavin! As a tour guide, this a question I get a lot and a difficult one to answer. While most people at times can find small faults with Skidmore as one can at any school, I'd say in general people are really happy to be here! I'd say the biggest problem I had with Skidmore was the lack of a Psychology minor. I was interested in Psychology, but not sure I wanted to invest the time in order to be a major. After taking a number of Psych courses, however, I fell in love and declared my Psychology major! I hope this helps!

Darra: I have a financial aid question. Is financial aid from Skidmore seperate from what you might get from filling out the FAFSA?

Beth_FinancialAid: The FAFSA is required for Federal student aid. However, Skidmore requires the PROFILE (a different financial aid application that the College Board administers) for Skidmore Grant awards. So, the shorter answer is "yes" Skidmore awards over $30 million in grants to its students every year, 99% of which is based on a family's demonstrated financial need.

HunterBell: If there was one thing that impacted you as a person while at Skidmore, what would it be?

Altagracia_Student: This sure is a great question and something I have been thinking about a lot the past few days since graduation is weeks away. My experience overall has been fantastic and I honestly feel like everything about Skidmore has impacted me. I have been thinking about how confident I am and prepared I am for the "real world". I have come a long way since freshman year as a first generation college student and can say with confidence that it is all because of Skidmore. It is such a rich campus and community to be apart of in so many levels from the classes to the life in the dormitories.

Katy: Hello, Beth! I was wondering if there were on-campus jobs available to students who want to pay off loans?

Beth_FinancialAid: Hi, Katy! There are many on-campus jobs available. Students can earn up to approx. $2,000 per year. The earnings are given in a paycheck based on the hours worked - just like any other job - and students can use those funds for books, or personal expenses - or they could save the money and use it to pay toward their indebtedness!

DineshAcharya: Hi, I am an international applicant and if I am not wrong, I figured that there are different social environments that characterize any given college though most college strive to maintain diversity. Or more specifically, students of a specific college have unique attributes that is also unique to that college. Is there any any specific "nature" or "character" that Skidmore seeks in its applicants?

Ken_Admissions: That is a great question. We look for a lot of attributes in our applicants - creativity, intelligence, social and cultural awareness, active social lives, open-mindedness... There is no right or wrong type of person for us to accept... a lot of it is based on academic strength as well.

Dawn: Does Skidmore meet 100% of student need?

Beth_FinancialAid: Hi Dawn - Skidmore does commit to meeting the demonstrated financial need of its students (as long as they complete their financial aid application by the deadline every year).

XiangziChen:  I have a question that I've always wanted to ask. What should I do while waiting for the final decisions?

Ken_Admissions:  You should keep working hard in your classes and enjoy your final year of secondary school!

Maria: What percent of financial aid is met by Skidmore?

Beth_FinancialAid: Hi Maria - we commit to meeting the demonstrated financial need of our admitted students - as long as they complete the financial aid application by our deadlines each year. We meet need first with a $3,500 Federal student loan, then we offer a $2,000 student employment job, and any remaining need is met with grant assistance - it could be a combination of Federal, State and College assistance - or it could be just Skidmore Grant, depending upon the student's other eligibility.

MaryF: What is Skidmore's pre-med program like?

Teshika_Admissions: Thank you for the question, Mary! The Pre-Med program is not exactly a major, but a "track". Students who are on the Pre-Med track take the course requirements that would prepare them for medical school. About 80% of our Pre-Med students are science students, but it is also possible to be a non-science major while on the Pre-Med track. About 75-80% of the Pre-Med students are admitted to medical school right away. Our Pre-Med students are part of the HPAC (Health Professions Advisory Committee), which also includes Pre-Vet, Pre-Dental, etc. We also have a Pre-Med club!

Madison: What is dorm life like? Are there coed dorms or off campus housing?

Aaron_Student: Hi Madison. A quick answer to your question would be to say that yes, our dorms are coed, and yes, we have both on and off campus housing. To elaborate further, about 90% of us live on campus for all four years. This could include any of our 9 dorms which have mostly single-sex bathrooms (although other options are available) and co-ed floors (although female floors are available), or our on-campus apartments. These are set up like condos, with 3-7 students (each with their own room) sharing a living room, bathroom(s), and a kitchen. I lived in the dorms for two years, in an on-campus apartment for 1 year, and now I live off campus! Living off campus is very easy, and there are a plethora of living options in Saratoga Springs.

KateD: Hello! My question is about senior year classes in high school. Is it recommended to take a fourth year of physical science? (for me, that would be an AP physics class)

Ken_Admissions: We recommend a fourth year of science, not necessarily physical science. Students can be admitted with only 3 years of science, but we recommend four years. We also like to see students fill a gap with another elective if you drop the fourth year of a major subject area.

XiangziChen:  Will there be many chances of jobs on campus? Do students usually apply for working on campus before freshmen year starts or after schedule of the semester has been settled down?

Beth_FinancialAid:  Hi XiangziChen - yes, we have many jobs on campus for students who are interested in working. We are actually changing our system of jobs for the 2012-13 academic year, and we anticipate that new students will be able to review and "apply" for jobs online over the summer!

Madeline: Hi!! I am really interested in doing psychology in Skidmore College. But are there any opportunities like Honors program that I could conduct my experiment under the supervision of the professor or work with them during summer? Also, what is the general class size for a psychology major? What is the main focus in psychology, is it social or others? I am doing IB higher psychology at the moment and I am really interested in it. Another question is about is it possible for the undergraduate international students to find a job or experience during term time in Skidmore? Thank you very much.

Altagracia_Student:  Madeline, it is always such a pleasure to meet prospective students who are interested in Psychology. I love the department (it is amongst the top 5 on campus). The courses and professors are great. Within the department there are many opportunities to do research. It can be as simple as asking a professor to be a research assistant. And this is an option as early as your second semester freshman year which is unheard of at most schools. This can be done during the school year and during the summer. I would absolutely recommend staying for a summer. I am a senior now and I have never had a class larger than about 32 students. As a major you are expected to take classes from three areas of psychology- social, cognitive, and abnormal psychology. For experience, at the moment I have a friend who is interning during the school year at a psychiatric center a town away. Hope this helps!!

Jane:  Ken, I declined taking an AP class as it conflicted with 2 classes I really wanted. How does that look to you since I don't have the same increase in GPA from an AP class?

Ken_Admissions:  Hi Jane, That can be ok... we like to see AP courses on transcripts, but students can still be admitted without them in some cases. As for the increase in GPA, I think you are referring to a weighted GPA. We actually re-calculate all GPAs and don't look just at the school provided weighted GPA. I hope that makes sense.

mdrowe726:  I have heard that there is the option to name your own major at Skidmore. As a student who is interested in art and childhood/elementary education, are the two easily integrated into one major? Have students majored in art education at Skidmore?

Aaron_Student:  While we have a great self-determined major program, I would recommend you either double major in art and education, or Major in education and minor in art. One of my housemates last year was a double major in art and education and is loving her time here. She now has an internship at our TANG teaching and art museum!

AjayBarde: I am possibly interested in premed. Are there opportunities such as paramedia training?

Teshika_Admissions:  Hi Ajay. Students who are interested in paramedic training often work in the Saratoga community. Some students may be pre-med students, but there have also been non-premed students who have volunteered who have been Geoscience or Exercise Science majors.

Bimalsen: Since Skidmore is need-based how much will not being able to pay affect our chances of getting in?

Beth_FinancialAid:  Hi Bimalsen - Skidmore is "need sensitive" in our admission process. We have to, unfortunately, pay attention to budget constraints when awarding financial aid, like most colleges. But, just like in the admission selection process, the stronger your academic/admission profile is for any college, the better chance you will be admitted and awarded. So, the best "strategy" if finances are a concern for you is to apply to a variety of colleges across the financial and selectivity spectrum. This will give you the best options for both admissions and financial aid.

Bimalsen: Chemistry does not look like a popular major when I look at the statistics is there any particular reason for that? Economics is a very popular course there and what are the chances of me not getting to study that as many will want to study that.

Altagracia_Student:  Bimalsen, Bio- chemistry is actually amongst our top majors on campus. The popular majors on campus tend to have larger departments and thus more courses and professors. So all students interested in a course will have the opportunity to take it.

Elsie: Hi, my name is Elsie and I am a sophomore at Fairfax High School. I am interested in studying more than one language and education, is that possible? I also play the violin and I was wondering if I could participate in an orchestra or chamber group if music isn't my major.

Aaron_Student:  Hi Elsie, great question. Yes, it would be possible for you to pursue all of your interests at Skidmore! While you can not triple major, you can double major in education and one language, or major in education and minor in up to three languages. Pertaining to your musical interests, it is definitely possible for you to participate in musical ensembles without being a music major or minor. You may take private violin lessons, or participate in any number of ensembles including orchestra and/or a chamber group. You can even play fiddle in our folk ensemble!

JennCan8: I also have a question about on-campus jobs. Are positions offered or does one need to apply for one?

Beth_FinancialAid:  Hi JennCan8 - student employment positions are held in our "job bank" - a student employment website. Students can browse and apply for any positions they are interested in - there are slightly varying pay rates and a wide range of department/offices that hire students. We generally have slightly more jobs than students looking for work in a given year, so it seems to work very well!

Liz: I have not been able to visit becasue of family health issues. Will this hurt my application?

Teshika_Admissions:  Thanks for the question, Liz. No, this should not hurt your application in any way. Some students do not have the ability to visit because of financial constraints, family issues, or just distance. We usually like to see students who have expressed and demonstrated their interest in Skidmore, but the lack of a visit will not hurt your application. If it is a concern for you, feel free to send us an email expressing your interest in the school! Of course, we hope that you get a chance to get to know us better -- either by exploring our website more or meeting with a rep in your area.

Oewart: How well do students balance academics and maintaingin a social life on campus?

Altagracia_Student:  Oewart, this is such a good question. Our students tend to have a lot going on with work and majors and such. But somehow we make it work. I feel, after some time students get used to the pace of Skidmore and it all becomes natural. There is always something going on on campus--lectures, shows, free food, parties etc. I think we do a good job of prioritizing so students do work during the day and are timely with their work. If a student were ever having trouble scheduling and or figuring out a solid study schedule, Student Academic Services is always available to students to help them sort things out.

Becca: Hi Beth, does that mean that a large majority of financial aid comes from loans rather than grants?

Beth_FinancialAid:  Hi Becca - No No No :-) The loan level we use to determine grant assistance is no greater than $3,500. Our average Skidmore Grant for first-year students this year was over $30,000. And that doesn't even include Federal or State grants students can qualify for. Again, the Skidmore Grant is based on demonstrated financial need, so any individual student's amount will be dependent upon their individual financial circumstances. We have a very helpful (as does every US college) Net Price Calculator on the Financial Aid webpage that will produce an estimated financial aid award based on the data you enter. It is worth checking out!

Dakota: Are four years of language required for admission?

Teshika_Admissions: Hi Dakota, 4 years of a language is not a "requirement" but more of a recommendation. We like to see that students are keeping up with the 5 main academic areas all 4 years (English, Social Science, Science, Math, Foreign Language). You do not have to take a language every year in high school, but the more demanding your program, the more competitive your application will look. I hope this helps!

Dakota:  How can I make sure that I can find a balance between academics and athletics at Skidmore?

Altagracia_Student: Hi Dakota, athletes at Skidmore become very familiar with Student Academic Services. At SAS athletes can have an advisor who helps them balance their schedule and find tutors if necessary. There are also really great study rooms and snacks available too. GO THOUROUGHBREDS!

Mollie94:  This question is for Aaron: can you speak to the music ensembles as Skidmore, particularly the choirs and a cappella groups? Thank you!

Aaron_Student:  Hey Mollie, we have a lot of great ensembles for our vocalists. We have two choirs. One is large and open to everyone including members of the community. The other is a smaller, more selective group for vocalists with more formal training. In addition to this you may be a part of even smaller vocal chamber groups. Every semester all of these ensembles as well as vocalists taking private or group lessons have the opportunity to perform in our beautiful Helen Filene Ladd Concert Hall! A Capella groups are plentiful at Skidmore. We have 2 all female groups, 2 co-ed groups, and 1 all male group, which all require an audition. We also have 1 all-inclusive A Capella group, the treble-makers!

Becca: When are the acceptance letters for regular decision expected to be mailed?

Teshika_Admissions:  Hi Becca, I'm guessing this means you have applied to Skidmore! Thank you for your app! The decision letters will be sent out on Friday, March 23rd.

Dawn: Are you still planning to send admission decisions by mid-March?

Teshika_Admissions: Hi Dawn, yes, they will be sent out on March 23rd.

JennCan8: Are on-campus jobs offered to a student based on merit or can one apply for them? Also, what are some examples of available jobs?

Beth_FinancialAid:  Hi again, JennCan8 - currently student jobs are offered to students based on need (not merit) but we have many students who apply and are hired regardless of their financial circumstances. Examples of student jobs: Administrative jobs in departments such as Finance, Athletics, the Library. Tour guides in Admissions, academic departments hire students as well. And Dining Services - of course - hires many students!

Adriannaa:  Are you notified of the amount of financial aid you will be receiving with your admission decision?

Beth_FinancialAid:  Hi Adriannaa - yes, at Skidmore we send new students their financial aid award notice with their letter of Admission (as long as we have a complete financial aid application).

Laura: Hi! I know some of you spoke about involvement in the musical ensembles. What choral groups do you have on campus and do you also put on a lot of musicals?

Aaron_Student:  Hi Laura, we have a lot of great ensembles for our vocalists. Unfortunately, the Skidmore Theatre department does not put on musicals. We do, however, have 2 student-run clubs which put on musicals every semester.

Francesca:  My brother is a senior at Skidmore right now and I was wondering whether or not there are scholarships that are available to me due to my relationship with him?

Beth_FinancialAid:  Hi Francesca - our grant assistance is almost entirely need-based, so the qualifying factor is the financial circumstances of your family.

Griffin: I've heard Skidmore is kind of cliquey with the two main groups being Hipsters and Athletes. Is this true?

Altagracia_Studnet:  Griffin, I always say whatever school you visit you will find groups of people who hang together who have a lot in common. One of the things I really enjoy about Skidmore is that all "types" of students hang out together. I have seen athletes attend art shows and hipsters attend sports games. Athletes travel together a lot so its almost a given that they are with each other often. I guess what I am trying to say is that Skidmore is not very cliquey. Hope that helped.

chaudang:  Good morning! I am Chau Dang from Vietnam. I am just about concerned about the scholarship and the multicultural life at Skidmore, such as the weather or food or special events?

Ken_Admissions:  Hello... We have a few students at Skidmore from Vietnam. Scholarships are awarded to admitted students based on need. If we admit you we will meet 100% of your demonstrated need. There are quite a few international students on scholarship here. Multicultural life is very strong at Skidmore. We have students from over 50 countries and 26% students of color. Diversity is quite strong here...

tjordan24:  Hi, I was wondering whether the final grades matter? In my country, the last semester is shortened and students must prepare for the Maturita exams so the results usually get worse. Is the final report important to admission/enrollment?

Ken_Admissions:  We do follow up with a final transcript and expect your work to be similar to what you showed us at the time of your application. With that being said, the grades you had when you applied are the most important.

Darra: A financial question- how much does your child's 529 college fund weigh in relation to Skidmore financial need?

Beth_FinancialAid:  Hi Darra - 529 Funds must be reported in the parents name on the financial aid applications as an asset. The answer about how much it matters really is "it depends," which probably won't surprise you. It depends on how much the fund is, for one thing. Generally speaking, parents' assets would have to be greater than $40,000 for them to make a difference at all with financial aid. I recommend using the Net Price Calculator on our Financial Aid webpage. Complete the form once with your 529 Plan included, and again with the 529 Plan excluded to understand the effect (if any) your 529 Plan has given your individual financial situation (and Skidmore's policies).

XiangziChen: Will gap years influence my application?

Ken_Admissions:  Gap years typically do not influence decisions. Too many years away from formal schooling can hurt sometimes, but one year off is not a negative. Gap years and deferred acceptances have become very popular in the last few years.

Maria: Hello! I have to decide between taking a fourth year of science and AP european history. I really want ap european history. Will it hurt me in my application process if I choose ap european history?

Teshika_Admissions:  That's a tough question, Maria. We like to see 4 years (or as many as possible) of the main academic areas but we also like to see rigorous courses -- in other words AP classes are great. If you enroll in AP European History and cannot take another science, and are concerned with how we view your transcript, feel free to make a note somewhere in your application that there is a scheduling conflict.

sortinghat: How do I know if my financial aid applicationa nd admission application are complete?

Ken_Admissions:  You should email both offices and we will get back to you soon,admissions@skidmore.edu and finaid@skidmore.edu

Dawn: Just to clarify -- will decisions be mailed or emailed?

Teshika_Admissions: We will be snail mailing our decision letters, Dawn. For international students, we will be emailing decisions.

Becca: Hello, I am sure there are many types of students at Skidmore, but what would a stereotypical Skidmore student be like socially and personality wise?

Altagracia_Student:  Becca, I love this question. It is one I get often when giving tours. There is no one Skidmore student. One of the great things about Skidmore is that this is not a cookie cutter campus. But if I had to pick one work to describe all students it would be PASSIONATE.

Darra: do you require admission interviews?

Teshika_Admissions: Darra, we do not require admissions interviews, but we usually recommend interviews, just to get a better sense of who you are. We do on campus interviews here, but we also have alumni interviews in your area.

Jane: If I can't play on the basketball team, I'd like to do club or intramurals. Is there a W club bball team and are intramurals active?

Altagracia_Student: Jane, you will be happy to find out that club and intramural sports are really popular on campus. Many students participate and many of their friends come to support. Many of the teams including the basketball teams require females to be on the teams.

Katy: I know that it is too late to submit a visual art supplement, but would I still be able to send a few prints of artwork for Skidmore Admissions to see my interest in art?

Teshika_Admissions: Feel free to send along your supplements, Katy. We have most likely reviewed your application already, so it may not affect the decision in any way, but it's always great to get a better look into your passions!

XiangziChen: How does skidmore balance creativity while prevent uncontrollability?

Ken_Admissions: Hello - I'm not sure what you mean by uncontrolability, but we balance the arts and academics very well. We have 60 majors here - 4 of them are art related (theater, art, music and dance) and 50+ academic majors (Business, English, Psychology, Politics, Biology and International Relations being the most poplular). I hope this helps...

Madison: Are classes more discussion-based or lecture-based?

Ken_Admissions: Hi Madison, Classes at Skidmore are much more discussion based... the average class size is 16 and there are no teacher assistants here. There are very few classes that would be considered lecture style here...

Laura: Do a lot of students send an art or music supplement with their application? Does this help with admissions at all?

Teshika_Admissions: Thanks for the question, Laura. Some students do send in arts supplements but in no way are they required. Sometimes the department (Studio Art department or Music department) may send the Admissions office a letter or note of support if they love your work.

Linda: How do You award scholarships and financial aid?

Beth_FinancialAid: Hi Linda - we award Skidmore Grant assistance based on demonstrated financial need of the family. We require the College Board's Profile form and use that information to determine an estimated family contribution, and then demonstrated financial need. We meet the demonstrated need of our families with reasonable student loan levels ($3,500 for first-year students) student employment (students can earn up to $2,000 in their first year) and then the remaining need is met with grant assistance (as long as the financial aid application is complete by our deadline).

Adriannaaa: Do many people get wait-listed at Skidmore?

Ken_Admissions: Depending on the applicant pool, we typically waitlist a few hundred students each year. Some of those students will enroll elsewhere while some do hang on to our waitlist. So, when it is time to make waitlist decisions, we typically have 100 or so active students on the waitlist to choose from...

sortinghat: Does the child care center located on campus offer jobs to students?

Beth_FinancialAid: Hi Sortinghat -yes, our child care center does offer jobs and we have jobs we coordinate with schools in the community, too!

Fowler: I am currently taking AP Language and Comp in my Junior year, but next year in order to fit in AP Statistics (I want to major in math)I will have to drop down from AP to Honors 12th grade english. Is this a big deal?

Ken_Admissions: No, that is not a big deal. The fact that you will be taking APs in other areas sort of makes up for it. We also understand that there are scheduling conflicts at high schools... Good luck and thanks for your interest in Skidmore.

Griffin: Hello! I am interested in majoring in education. How is the education program? Is there an opportunity for internships in local schools?

Teshika_Admissions: Hello Griffin! The Education department is a smaller department but very community oriented (professors know their students very well!). Education majors graduate with an initial certification in grades 1-6 and have plenty of opportunities to student teach. There is actually a requirement for majors to spend some time in the classroom so a lot of hands-on work!

JennCan8: When I submitted my application I had checked off that I had not seen the campus, but I will be visiting tomorrow. Is there anyway to change that information on my application or is too late?

Ken_Admissions: It is not too late - you will fill out a form at the admissions office tomorrow before your tour and that will automatically update your file. I hope you have a great visit.

Linda: Hi Altagracia, how would you describe students relationship with professors.

Altagracia_Student: Linda, I was so excited to read this question. Skidmore is a small campus where only full time professors teach. Yey, no TAs!! Because of this, students have the opportunity to build long lasting relationships with professors. Professors here have time to sit and chat, to grab coffee, and even hold classes in their homes. Personal examples: freshman year the professor for my freshman seminar called my cell phone to make sure I was okay after I missed two classes from being sick. I have babysat and house sat for professors. Skidmore professors care and it shows.

Francesca: I am a high school junior planning on applying early decision to Skidmore next year (I love it there!!). Is junior year too early to interview?

Ken_Admissions: Hi Francesca - I'm glad to hear of your interest in Skidmore. We will start interviews in May of your junior year. The summer is a popular time to interview or during senior year... but yes, you can interview as a junior starting in May...

JaneBaffi: Can you describe how creative thought is encouraged or measured in the classroom, especially in academic subjects other than the 'arts' ? What one thing do you wish you had done in high school that would have prepared you more for the Skidmore experience?

Aaron_Student: Hi Jane, thank you for your question; that is something that we love talking about. As a prospective student, I too wasn't sure if I really 'bought' the notion of Creative Thought Matters at Skidmore. Since arriving, however, I have really seen Creative Thought come to life! One of the great things about all of our departments is how open-ended the requirements are. In my classes as well, the assignments are very much open to interpretation. In this year alone, I have written research papers on the incorporation of light shows into musical performances, the amount that a placebo can affect one's rhythmic ability, and one in which I diagnosed and described Superman's phobia of Kryptonite! In terms of what I could have done to prepare myself for the Skidmore experience, I can't really say. I asked Altagracia for help on this question, and we both agreed that when we came to Skidmore, we threw everything out the window and just tried to enjoy Skidmore as much as possible! Our orientation programs are both fun, and really helpful at acclimating you to the Skidmore way of life.

LindaMei: Hello! What were some mandatory classes you had to take at Skidmore?

Altagracia_Student: Hi LindaMei, at Skidmore there are a number of general requirements. This will probably take up a third of your courses if you have one major. These are expository writing, mathematics, art, non-western history, social science, humanities, and a lab science. What is fantastic about the requirements is that there is no one way to fulfill a requirement. Take for instance the art requirement- you can take a creative writing course, studio art, dance, music, or theatre course. For all the requirements there are many options.

maria: Hi! I was wondering how your English department is. I am interested in majoring in English, and I love writing. What kind of opportunities are available at Skidmore for people with these types of interests?

Ken_Admissions: Hi Maria, English is often the #1 major at Skidmore... and if not, it is in the top 5 every year. We offer journalism, creative writing, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, documentary film making, etc... It is a robust and diverse major. We also publish many journals and magazines right from the office, the most famous being Salmagundi. We have lectures and readings from students, faculty and professional writers and we offer internships in the field for academic credit.

Liz_Connolly: Can freshmen have cars?

Altagracia_Student: Liz, freshman can have a cars on campus. You are allowed to have a car on campus all four years if you'd like. And you will never have a problem finding parking. Many students don't use their cars because driving to class will take longer than walking and a free bus takes us into town. Town is also just a walk away. Best.

Linda: How is an applicant's chances of being accepted affected, if their early decision application has being transferred to the regular pool?

Teshika_Admissions: Hi Linda, if your application was deferred to regular decision, we will look at it as a regular decision application. In other words, we will consider it in the larger pool and reevaluate. The one thing that may weigh slightly heavier than the other applications is that there is a definite interest in Skidmore and we love to see students who are interested in us!

Linda: Hi Beth is the CSS profile the same thing as the College Board Profile?

Beth_FinancialAid:Hi Linda - yes, one in the same. CSS is a part of the College Board organization, so you've got the correct terminology!

s: How do you view applicants with a rigorous course load and grades but low test scores?

Ken_Admissions: We like to see a rigorous course load over testing. That is one of the most important parts of any successful application to Skidmore. Testing is still required, but many times it is the challenging transcript that helps a student gain admission...

Liz: Hi! I want to Major in Psych, Aaron - can you tell me what you like best about the Psychology program at Skidmore?

Aaron_Student: Hi Liz! While I did not declare my Psychology major until the Fall semester of my Senior year and so I didn't get to take full advantage of the department, I would say that the research opportunities available at Skidmore are like none other. Students can partake in anything from 1-credit to 4-credit research courses, or even full-time research internships over the summer. Research can start as early as the second semester of your freshman year, and professors have a wide range of topics in Psychology that they are currently dealing with. We even have a class where each student gets their own rat in order to run neuropsychological tests!

Francesca: Does Skidmore accept SUNY credits from courses taken in high school?

Ken_Admissions: Yes, Skidmore accepts both college credits and AP credits from students. SUNY courses will be accepted with grades of A or B and as long as we have an equivalent course offered here. These courses will be submitted to the Registrar's Office, not admissions. Students can receive up to one semester worth of credit from college courses and/or AP/IB exam scores.

Bimalsen: Good to hear bio-chem is popular:) What is the maximum amount of subjects that I can take during the first 2 years and by when must I declare my Major(s)?

Altagracia_Student: Bimalsen, freshman year most students take about 16 credits or 4 classes. All of these courses can be from different subjects if you'd like. And by subjects I mean different departments. Students are required to declare their majors second- semester of their sophomore year. Best.

Dakota: When being admitted to Skidmore, do you have to declare a major right away? If not, how long do you have to do so?

Altagracia_Student: Dakota, you will not have to declare your major until the second semester of your sophomore year. Best.

Laura: Do you require SAT IIS? I am going to take the AP US History Exam and AP Lit Exam and the SAT II for both, so will one be weighted more heavily than the other in my application?

Ken_Admissions: SAT IIs are NOT required for admission. If you take them and score well, they can positively benefit your application. AP exams would be weighed more heavily as scores of 4 or 5 can give you automatic college credit here.

Bimalsen: Could you please tell me more about the Saratoga Springs London program.

Teshika_Admissions: The London program is an opportunity for students to go abroad early. There are about 35-40 students who go to London each year and it is an extremely exciting program. It is definitely not for everyone (especially if you are the type that needs that extra time to settle in) but those who do it, they seem to love it! Classes are all with Skidmore students, there are 2 Skidmore faculty that go to London with the students, and the classes are Skidmore classes. This doesn't mean that you can't go abroad again later in your Skidmore career.

Fowler: I was wondering if I were to apply for Early Decision next year and get in, when would I find out about my financial aid package? If it weren't as much as I needed, could I turn it down?

Beth_FinancialAid: Hi Fowler - Your financial aid award will be ready with your admission decision (as long as the Profile is complete and submitted by on time). If you needed more assistance than what we offered, the first step would be to contact us (financial aid office) and make sure we understand your situation. Sometimes a second look, and more information, can lead to an increase in your financial need and then financial aid. If, ultimately, you still could not afford to attend Skidmore, you can let us know and we will withdraw our offer of admission. That is the one caveat to the "binding" early decision process - at Skidmore and every college.

Leah: If you had to rank the SATs, the transcript, and the essay in order of importance what would the order be?

Ken_Admissions: Transcript and essay would definitely be two of the most important items... closely followed by the SAT. It is hard to rank them, but transcript first is a sure thing.

Jane: Anything you wished you had done during your time there that you didn't?

Ken_Admissions: Study Abroad!

Oliver: Hello, Skidmore! This question might be especially for Aaron. How well did Skidmore accommodate your interest in 2 majors? Do you feel you got a lot out of it by double majoring? To any other students, how do you feel Skidmore provided to meet all your interests?

Aaron_Student: Hello Oliver! Skidmore has great opportunities for any student with a wide range of interests. Over 50% of us either double major or major/minor. My teachers have definitely encouraged me to combine all my interests, whether it be writing about Psychological factors in the development of music, or psychological research topics pertaining to music.

s: Does anyone have any experience with athletics? If so, what was your experience like and how is the support from other classmates?

Altagracia_Student: S, I am sorry to say that I have not played a sport at Skidmore. I am however taking a course in racquetball of which I really enjoy. There are many courses for credit that are offered in the athletics including riding, power and agility, and swimming. Since freshman year I have noticed that the support for sports on campus has increased dramatically. Best. GO THOUROUBREDS.

darra: DO you offer a Biotechnology major?

Ken_Admissions: We don't have a specific biotechnology major at Skidmore. Biology is one of our most popular majors and the most popular science area major.

XiangziChen: I apologize for my phrasing. The one specific charm of Skidmore that attracts me so is its atmosphere of creativity and freedom. How does Skidmore help a student with wide range of interests and talents to find the best-match major for him/her?

Ken_Admissions: You don't have to pick your specific major until the sophomore (second) year. Therefore students have up to 16 classes already taken before they make this decision. We also offer a great advising system and a set of distribution requirements that allow students to explore the curriculum.

Teshika_Admissions: Hi Xiangzi. Many students (about 60%) are double majors or have minors so if you have a wide range of interests, that is great! Many students discover their passions during the first year and a half before they have to declare their major, usually through our core requirements. We encourage students to pursue what they love and there are very few restrictions.

XiangziChen: Thanks. A question about dormitory: Can students stay at dorms during winter/spring breaks?

Ken_Admissions: International students are allowed to stay on campus during breaks, but domestic students are expected to leave campus...

skidmoremom2b: What percentage of students study abroad? Are there any study abroad programs geared specifically for mathematics majors?

Altagracia_Student: Skidmoremom2b, first off, love the screen name!! Many, many students study abroad. We are top 5 in the country for campuses whose students study abraod. I think about 65% of the Skidmore students study abroad. It just is apart of the Skidmore experience. I went to Australia and loved it!! I know for a fact that if it were not for Skidmore I would have not even considered studying abroad. Here is more about my experience abroad.http://academics.skidmore.edu/blogs/altagracia/2011/12/12/a-year-ago-from-today/

Emma: How is the art department? Is it mostly fine arts or film...etc?

Aaron_Student: Hi Emma, Studio Art is both one of our most popular majors and one of our most popular minors. It is mostly fine art, although many different opportunities are open to you including but not limited to fabric arts, painting, drawing, ceramics, graphic design, and print-making. While we do not have a film department at Skidmore, film is one of our most popular self-determined majors, drawing on classes from both the art and theatre department, as well as other areas around campus.

tjordan24: Are there many students from Europe at Skidmore? I've heard that at some schools international students hang out with other 'non-Americans' and not so much with the Americans. How is it to be an international student at Skidmore?

Ken_Admissions: We have an incredibly diverse international student population at Skidmore. Students come from over 50 countries and almost 10% of our students are from an international background. European students come from UK, France, Switzerland, Turkey, Greece, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Spain... There is a really nice mix here between American and non-Americans. That is not an issue here.

Leah: Because Skidmore is so small do you ever feel like resources or opportunities that it's hard to find resources for research or internship/job connections?

Altagracia_Student: Leah, interestingly enough because it is such a small campus there ARE so many opportunities for internships, research, and jobs. We get so much attention from faculty that our voices are heard; if you are interested in something and want to gain experience there is always a professor to talk to who can connect you with someone. I am interested in at-risk youth. Sophomore year I told a professor about this and that I wanted to work at a youth shelter. The next week I started interning at a youth shelter a town away. Best.

Leah: How does Skidmore create a sense of community?

Teshika_Admissions: In my experience, the sense of community was really established by my professors. They were amazing at making us feel comfortable and loved and I never felt like simply a number. Oftentimes I would run into my professors downtown at coffeeshops and I still babysit my professors' children!

Liz_Connolly: Can I major in psychology and also be pre-med?

Altagracia_Student: Liz, of course you can ! Best.

s: Does anyone have any experience with athletics? If so, what was your experience like and how is the support from other classmates?

Ken_Admissions: The division III program is very strong at Skidmore with 19 varsity teams that compete in the ECAC east and the Liberty League. The men's basketball team just won the Liberty League Conference title for the second year in a row and the men's ice hockey team just won the first round of the playoffs and will be advancing this weekend. Also, the girl's field hockey team were ranked # 3 in the country this year. There is a great sports facility here and a lot of support from the Skidmore community!

s: Is there a strong LGBT community on campus?

Altagracia_Student: Hey S, there is something to say about a campus that not only has a Pride organization but also ally training available to students, gender neutral bathrooms and a gender neutral floor. The Skidmore Pride alliance organizes some of the biggest events of the year. Everyone attends. This is a very accepting and open minded campus. Best.

Linda: I am currently taking intro to psychology at a CUNY college while in H.S. will the credits be transferable?

Ken_Admissions: Most likely. College courses and AP exam scores can translate to college credits at Skidmore. The Registrar's Office will handle this, not admissions... many of our students come in with advance credits.

Molly: I am interested in illustration (of children's books). Does the Communication Arts concentration in Studio Art apply to illustration?

Teshika_Admissions: Hi Molly, I would say that if you are interested in illustration, Studio Art is definitely the way to go, and you don't necessarily have to have a concentration. We even have a Children's Books course in the Education department, so many interdisciplinary opportunities.

Bimalsen: Although I really like chemistry but I also like economics and I am still undecided about my career. So how will Skdimore solve this problem?

Altagracia_Student: Bimalsen, no worries. Skidmore can help! First off, you will not have to make a decision until your sophomore year second semester. But Skidmore also really encourages students to fulfill all that they are passionate about. So if you would like to double major in Chem and Econ, go for it! And you can have an advisor for both of the majors. Best.

Linda: Does Skidmore have any partner ships with Medical Schools?

Ken_Admissions: While many of our students are interested in PreMed, we don't have any formal partnerships. Students apply to universities around the counrty that best suit their specific needs and interests within medical fields. Typically 80% of Skidmore students who apply to medical school are admitted.

tjordan24: I'd like to ask Aaron if there are any electric guitar lessons or rock music courses available at Skidmore and if I can attend them without being a music major? Anoter thing, if someone starts a band, are there any places for students to rehearse?

Aaron_Student: Hi, great question! We have three guitar instructors as part of our music department. Two focus on classical music, and one on jazz. All of these teachers have a lot of experience in a wide range of musical genres, so I encourage you to get to know them and find who will suit your interests best. There are a whole lot of bands on campus, and plenty of places for them to rehearse. If you are involved in the music ensembles in the music department, you are given access to rooms in the building which have drum sets, amps, etc. If you are not involved in the department, we have a 'band trailer' which can be booked for band practice. This also has a drum set and amps. If you have your own amp and/or drum set, you may also reserve one of two other venues for practice.

Emma: What GPA should we have?

Teshika_Admissions: Emma, GPA is a hard one to answer because it depends on the types of classes that you have taken and what is offered at your school. Generally admitted students average at around B+/A- but some schools weigh GPAs, some schools don't even give out grades, so it all depends on the context of your school.

Madison: Is there wireless internet on campus?

Ken_Admissions: Hi Madison, Yes, the majority of Skidmore's campus is wireless. That is not a problem here... technology is implemented quite well inot the campus community...

Griffin: How is the social life at Skidmore? Is it clique?

Altagracia_Student: Griffin, I have had weekends where I needed to create itineraries because I wanted to see and attend to so much. There is just that much going on here. I would not call this a "cliquey" place. All types of students from all walks of life are friends with each other and support each other. We understand and appreciate there is something to take from everyone- the learning experience is not just in the class room but outside of the classroom interacting with students. Best.

Tianhe: Does dual-major program apply to all majors?

Teshika_Admissions: Tianhe, yes double majoring is a possibility for any discipline! About 60% of our students have double majors or minors so if you would like to pursue all of your interests, it is very easy to do so.

susanna: What score do you need to get on the ACT or SAT to be admitted into Skidmore?

Ken_Admissions: The average ACT score is in the 28-30 range, but students can have scores lower than that and still be admitted.

s: I am interested in athletics and am wondering how popular athletics are on campus?

Altagracia_Student: S, I must say since freshman year support for the athletics has increased by so much. More people are attending games. The student government association offers buses to sports events. Best.

Madison: What kind of entertainment options are nearby?

Aaron_Student: Hello again Madison! Both Skidmore and Saratoga Springs are a great places for entertainment. Skidmore has a huge amount of activities that go on every weekend, ranging from concerts to comedy shows, fashion shows, dances, etc. In Saratoga Springs as well there is a large amount of concert venues, restaurants, and museums, as well as bowling, and laser tag. Saratoga Springs also hosts community events like the Vicorian Street Walk, Restaurant Week, and Chowder-Fest!

Tianhe: Hi, I wonder how often do you hold exhibitions in your gallery and where are the pieces from?

Altagracia_Student: Tianhe, there are about 6 major exhibits per year and some small ones along the way. Our Tang Teaching Museum holds professional art work. So the art comes from professional artists. Best. Check it out http://tang.skidmore.edu/

skidmoremom2b: Can you tell me about the internship opportunities and career services Skidmore offers?

Ken_Admissions: Internships are offered in all majors during the semester or the summer. The career services office is very user-friendly and has national and international databases of internships available to students. We also have a strong alumni network for internships and jobs.

Becca: What is the Jewish life like on campus? Is there an active Hillel? Shabbat Dinners? Hebrew classes?

Altagracia_Student: Becca, there is a Hillel on campus. Shabbat is held every Friday. Skidmore has a full time rabbi on campus. The dining hall on campus accommodate for special diets including kosher diets. Best.

Bimalsen: How high is the competition for places in the soccer and cross-country team?

Ken_Admissions: Unfortunately there is no cross country team at Skidmore. As for soccer, the students who will be competitive for the team will most likely be recruited in advance by the coach. If interested, please fill out the athletic form on the athletics website... this will get your name to the coach.

s: What kind opportunities does Skidmore offer for internships or research?

Teshika_Admissions: Internships are offered in various areas - most students will work closely with Career Services to find the right placement. Internships can be done for credit and there are also opportunities for students to receive funding if it is an unpaid internship. Research happens in almost every area, and especially for the science majors, students can start researching as soon as their first semester freshman year. What's great about being at a small school is that there are no graduate students to take away the opportunities to work closely or one-on-one with professors!

Madison: Where do I collect mail? How do my parents, family and friends send packages?

Aaron_Student: Hi Madison. Students have the same mailbox, located in the student center, for all four years. Packages can be sent and received without leaving campus. Simply address letters to: Your Name Your Class Year Skidmore College 815 N. Broadway Saratoga Springs, NY 12866

Bimalsen: What is a typical day at Skidmore like?

Ken_Admissions: The typical day at Skidmore is fun, active, challenging, engaging, demanding, busy, rewarding... there really is no typical day at Skidmore!

Jane: Ken, is that true for all the sports - that most are recruited in advance, or are there any walk-on chances?

Ken_Admissions: There are walk-on tryouts, but for fall sports the recruited athletes arrive early to start workouts and by the time other students arrive, the team is pretty much set...

Altagracia_Student: The dining hall bakes the best cookies you will ever sink your teeth into.

XiangziChen: Imagining the worst, if I get rejected by Skidmore this year (T_T) and still want to transfer to skidmore, will the rejection influence my transfer application if I apply to transfer immediately in my freshman year? What do you value the most reviewing a transfer application?

Ken_AdmissionsFor transfer applications, the Committee likes to see one full year of college work. So, applying right away for mid-year transfer admission usually does not work out.

Leah: How does Skidmore create a sense of community?

Altagracia_Student: Leah, I feel like so much of Skidmore is designed to build a tight knit community. Everything from the way the freshman seminar is designed to the campus only having one road that goes around the campus as opposed to through it. The students in your freshman seminar will live in your dormitory so the learning experience continues to your dorm and does not just happen in the class room. This is also a very welcoming, friendly, open minded, and accepting campus and it shows. Best.

maria: Are students politically active, and if so, would you say the majority is more liberal or more conservative?

Teshika_Admissions: What I loved about my experience at Skidmore was that there was never a dull moment, and students were always active. In terms of politics, I think the pressure is less about which side you stand on, but more about the fact that you are active. Election season was a very busy time at Skidmore and I noticed most posters had the word "vote" written all over, and there were even huge picket signs that spelled out "vote" on the main green. Students are probably a little more liberal, but there is a strong Young Republicans Club and even a club called "Students on the Fence". They discuss political issues without having to identify as "democrats" or "republicans".

darra: If a coach is interested in you for a particular sport, could you know in advance if you are admitted to Skidmore or do you follow the regular admission/application process?

Ken_Admissions: You would not know in advance - recruited athletes follow the same procedure...

Deirdre_Walsh: How are roommates assigned at Skidmore?

Teshika_Admissions: Roommates are assigned based on a questionnaire that you answer during the summer. They ask questions like "how messy are you," "Are you a morning person," "what type of music do you listen to," etc.

Emma: I heard the the female to male ratio is pretty bad. As a girl who primarily has best male friends- would I have a tough time?

Ken_Admissions: The male/female ratio is 40% male 60% female and the first year class is 42% male 58% female. So, I wouldn't call that 'bad'... most small liberal arts colleges will have similar statistics...

skidmoremom2b: Can you tell me about the internship opportunities and career services Skidmore offers?

Altagracia_Student: Skidmoremom2b, getting an internship is as easy as asking a professor if they know anyone who is experienced in a particular field. One can ask career services for assistance. The alumni network is incredible. Alumni always want to help current students find internships and even jobs. This is something I have learned especially this year. As my email inbox would be flooded with emails from alumni offering advice and such about the real world. Career services in itself is fantastic. They help edit resumes and make you interview ready. There are also many networking fairs that are held on campus. I actually just offered a job in the Chicago area and in many ways I thank career services for preparing me. They also offer a scholarship for students to purchase interview clothing. Best.

Laura: Do you guys offer any summer programs for high school students?

Teshika_Admissions: Yes we do! Our pre-college program is a great opportunity for high school students. Here is more info: http://cmsauthor.skidmore.edu/odsp/precollege/index.cfm

Leah: It seems like a lot of students know what there majors are going to be when they enter Skidmore. Are there any seminars or programs to explore majors if a student is strong in many subjects?

Aaron_Student: Hi Leah, this is a great question for me. I entered Skidmore my freshman year having almost no idea what I wanted to study. I was interested in Psychology and new I wanted to be involved in the music department. After taking a neuroscience course, I decided I wanted to be a Neuroscience major. After further searching, however, I decided that I wanted to focus only on music and so I declared this at the end of my sophomore year. After spending all of my junior year playing music, including a semester at a music conservatory in Melbourne, Australia, I decided to widen my range of classes. I realized at this point that I only needed an additional five courses to complete my Psychology major, and so I declared a double major in Music and Psychology! Our curriculum is open enough to allow students to take a wide range of courses, and still have enough time to major, or even double major.

JennCan8: When I submitted my application I had checked off that I had not seen the campus, but I will be visiting tomorrow. Is there anyway to change that information on my application or is too late?

Altagracia_Student: JennCan8, don't worry too much about it. After your visit tomorrow the office will make note that you visited. I am giving a 11am tour!! Find me!! Best.

Bimalsen: Last question before i really go. If i get rejected,I will apply again next year after I ace my A levels. Would getting rejected the 1st time do any harm?

Teshika_Admissions: If you are denied admission, we will look at your application again in full, and it should not hurt just because you are reapplying. We do like to see improvement, however, during your year off.

KateD: Do you find that students have time to go into Saratoga Springs for shopping/food/hanging out, or do they mainly stay on campus?

Altagracia_Student: KateD, because there is so much available on campus many students do stay on campus. There is no getting bored here. But if a student wanted to venture off campus that can be done. Some students have big breaks in between classes and will go off campus then. Others casually stroll into town for long periods of time during the weekend. There is lots to see and do in town so one should always make the time to visit. Best.

Linda: What should I be expecting as an incoming Freshman?

Teshika_Admissions: Linda, there will be a huge number of things to expect, but I would say, be prepared to have your life changed! It is definitely a different experience from living at home.

JennCan8: What kinds of things are there to do outside of Skidmore? I've heard great things about the surrounding area and I was wondering what types of things students do on the weekends for fun.

Altagracia_Student: JennCan8, Saratoga is not a college town so the town can survive without the campus which means there is a lot in town. There are heaps of restaurants, shops, and fun events like chowderfest, the victorian street walk, and arts fest to experience. For the 21+ people there are also really cool bars in town. Saratoga is a great and there is so much to see and do here. You have to see this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34F9JjCXCjU

Madison: If I want to be in a musical/play or other performance on campus can I simply audition or do I have to be apart of the drama club?

Altagracia_Student: Madison, this is a very non exclusive campus so students whether in the theatre department or not can participate a production. The performances in the theatre department are pretty much all student run so you can absolutely be apart of a production, drama club or not. Best.

XiangziChen: Dear Aaron, Altagracia, Ken and Teshika, thank you so much for answering all the questions! It's 10 in the morning here in Beijing and I have to run for my French class. Hopefully I'll have the chance to bring a roast duck for you from Beijng and thank you face to face on campus of Skidmore! Have a lovely evening!

JennCan8: Thank you everyone for your time. It is greatly appreciated. And Altagracia I will definitely look out for tomorrow!

Teshika_Admissions: Thank you all!! Have a great night (or morning!) and if you have any other questions at any point, please feel free to contact us at the Admission office. We would love to hear from you.

Altagracia_Student: Well folks, its been great. But I have some reading for my Applied Psychology course to attend to. This has been great. Hope to hear from you all again. Best wishes. And if you are ever visiting campus as for Alta as a tour guide. This has been so much fun. If you have any more questions feel free to contact me through: my blog: http://academics.skidmore.edu/blogs/altagracia/ or formspring: http://www.formspring.me/AltaMontilla or follow me on twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/ALTAatSKIDMORE

Skidmore: That's all, folks! Thanks for the great questions and have a good night (or morning). If you'd like to contact the Admissions office, you can call us at 1-800-867-6007, e-mail us atadmissions@skidmore.edu and find us on the Web at http://cms.skidmore.edu/admissions/.
