Skidmore Admissions: Welcome to the Skidmore student live chat! Before we begin, the current Skidmore students will introduce themselves.

Skidmore_Emma: Hey Everyone! :) I'm Emma, I'm a sophomore from Falmouth, Maine. I'm a psychology major with a studio art minor. I'm on the women's volleyball team and am a member of the Honors Forum council as a sophomore representative. I am also an admissions ambassador.

Skidmore_Dara: Hey, y'all! I'm Dara. I'm a junior from Westfield, NJ, double majoring in Theater and Religious Studies. I spent last semester studying off campus in Waterford, CT at the National Theater Institute at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center. While I spend most of my time in the theater, I also work as a tour guide.

Skidmore_Geoff: Hey, I'm Geoff. I'm a Junior double major between Government and International Affairs. I'm also a catcher on the Skidmore Baseball team from Underhill, Vermont. I've also spent a semester studying European politics in Germany, as well as traveling pretty extensively.

Skidmore_Anya: Hello everyone! My name is Anya, I'm a senior from Jericho, Vermont. I'm about to graduate with a B.A. in Biology. Next year I will be moving to Boston to work in a research lab at Brigham and Women's Hospital under a Skidmore alumni. I plan on working in that lab for two or three years before going to grad school for genetics. Ask me about anything, but especially about the sciences!

Skidmore_Altagracia: HI FRIENDS !!! My name is Altagracia ("what? how do you say that!?) - no worries, Alta is just fine. I am a senior from the Bronx, NY. I attended the High School of American Studies at Lehman College. I am a Psychology Major, Religious Studies Minor. My extra- curricular activities this year involve being an admissions ambassador, an online ambassador ambassador (http://academics.skidmore.edu/blogs/altagracia) , a student caller for the annual fund, and I babysit for a faculty member of Skidmore College. My post- college plans involve working for a non- profit organization in the greater Chicago area.

Looking forward to all your great questions :)

Skidmore_Aaron: Hi guys I'm Aaron. I am a senior at Skidmore, double majoring in Music and Psychology. I have been a part of a whole lot of music ensembles at Skidmore - everything from Orchestra, to Jazz Band, to various chamber groups. I'm also a DJ on Skidmore's radio station! I look forward to answering your questions!

jl340: What is your favorite thing to do at skidmore?

Skidmore_Emma: Hey jl340, my favorite thing to do at Skidmore is to hang out on the green with friends and attempt to do homework. It's especially nice when the weather is beautiful, like yesterday.

Skidmore_Dara: Hey, jl340! The coolest part of campus, in my opinion, is the roof of the Tang Museum. If you ever just need to breathe, that's the perfect spot to go up and take in as much air as you need. Even better, though, is bringing your friends and guitar up there and jamming out.

Skidmore_Geoff: Hey jl340, my favorite thing to do at skidmore is definitely baseball. We've got a pretty good team skill wise, as well as a lot of good guys on the team.

Skidmore_Altagracia: j1340, my favorite thing to do is to attend on campus events- just for fun events, performances, and even those which are organized by the academic departments. Its a great way to meet other students and see what student's hard work can create on our campus. Best.

jl340: What do you wish you knew before coming to Skidmore?

Skidmore_Altagracia: Hi j1340, honestly, I wish I knew four years would fly by so fast. You have the time of your life then graduation creeps up. :/ Best.

Skidmore_Emma: Hey jl340, I wish I knew that transitioning to college is not as bad as you think. I found that Skidmore did a really good job making me feel comfortable on campus, I made friends a lot easier than I thought I would, and overall, Skidmore has really become a second home to me.

Skidmore_Geoff: Before coming to Skidmore I wish that I had had a better idea of what I wanted to study, however I think that's just a personal thing. Skidmore is definitely a place that can help people who don't necessarily know what they want to study yet.

Perri: I am interested in the health sciences. I understand that the college offers biology but I am unsure if I want to enter the premed track, nursing or even study to become a physicians assistant. What does Skidmore offer in these areas of study?

Skidmore_Anya: Hi, Perri! There are a ton of options for students interested in the health sciences. First of all, you do not have to be a science major to be pre-med (there's actually a slightly higher med school acceptance rate for non-science majors). If you are interested in the health profession topics such as human anatomy, physiology, and exercise, I would suggest looking into the ex-sci major. The Biology major is focused more on plant/animal ecosystems and cellular and molecular biology. Exercise science has incredible equipment only found in top hospitals and has some amazing breakthrough research going on looking at the health of firefighters and trying to understand why they run such a high risk of heart attack. We have a great collaborative program for nursing with NYU, where you take a certain set of courses and will be automatically accepted into their nursing program after Skidmore graduation if you get a C or above in those pre-req courses. Let me know if that fully answers your question.

Perri: How does Skidmore ease freshmen into the transition between High School and College?

Skidmore_Dara: Hi, Perri! The FYE of Skidmore is the perfect transition from HS to college life. During the few days of orientation, you get a chance to meet everyone from your Scribner Seminar [which you select over the summer], including your peers, your peer advisor, and your seminar professor. You also live in the same dorm as the people in your seminar, so right off the bat, you've got a network of friends who are in your boat. Also, your professor becomes your advisor, and they get to know you really well. Anya was actually my peer advisor, and I don't think I would have gotten through my first year without her help.

Sean: How difficult is it to double major?

Skidmore_Dara: Hi, Sean! Double majoring is entirely manageable, and your advisors will always be there to help you out. As long as you keep on top of your workload and keep a clear sense of what you need/want to accomplish, you'll be absolutely fine.

jl340: Can you describe the freshman seminar you took?

Skidmore_Emma: Hey jl340, my freshman seminar was called Social Justice. It looked at the psychology behind law- we discussed topics like the death penalty and "mercy killings" and other similar issues. The class focused on discussions/debates which really helped my public speaking.

Skidmore_Dara: jl340: My Scribner Seminar was called Human Origins. It looked at the evolution of human culture through the lenses of both English and biology. In a word, it was awesome. I've never been a science person per se, but that seminar was the reason I actually stayed here last summer to take a class in genetics. The best thing about the seminars is the way in which they allow-and really encourage-you to take risks and explore as much as you can.

Skidmore_Geoff: My freshman seminar was called Faces of Capitalism. We studied a number of economic theories from Smith, to Marx, to Hegel, and then examined modern economic systems and talked about elements of these respective theories in each. My final paper was a 15 page paper about SuperCapitalism and Venture Capitalism, and had to tie them together.

jl340: Any advice for incoming freshman (other than being open to new things and new people)?

Skidmore_Geoff: I would say some good advice would be don't kill yourself trying to get a 4.0. Obviously try for A's and what not, but don't spend all of your time in the library editing a paper or getting way ahead on homework. Theres a lot about college besides schoolwork that you may miss if you put too much focus on school.

Peedee: According to the Master Schedule for the fall, lots of the Scribner seminars offered partially overlap the meeting times of other classes. For example, there's one seminar on W/F from 12:20-1:40pm that conflicts with any classes scheduled M/W/F from 1:25-2:20pm, and another seminar on W/F from 10:10-11:30am that makes it impossible to take a M/W/F 11:15-12:50pm class. It happens with other T/Th choices too. Why do so many Scribner seminars conflict by 15 minutes with the meeting times for 'regular' courses?

Skidmore_Aaron: Great question Peedee, it looks like you've been doing your research. Because the class schedule is already set when you register for classes at Skidmore, there may be some conflicts between classes that you really want to take. This is unavoidable because of the huge number of classes offered here! Since you have 8 semesters to complete your coursework, you will have plenty of time in future semesters to take a class that conflicts with your Scribner Seminar.

memurray12: Emma- I will be a Studio Art major in the fall, and I would love to hear about your experience in the art program!

Skidmore_Emma: Hey memurry12, first of all congrats! In regard to the art experience, so far I have taken three art classes- Color, Visual Concepts, and Form and Space, all of which are introductory classes. So far I have really enjoyed all of them. Some of them are tough work wise, but I have learned about using many different materials and different ways to approach art. The professors are amazing and I am looking forward to taking more art classes.

Evan: I have a question for Anya; Hi! When I came to visit Skidmore, i spoke with you in the admissions office and, having similar interests as I, you got me really excited about the school :). What made you decide to come to Skidmore as appose to a larger research or specified schools which have a better known science program? Also as a general question to everyone else, what schools did you turn down to attend Skidmore? Thank you :)

Skidmore_Anya: Hey Evan! I'm so glad I was an influence. I chose Skidmore because the facilities far exceed those of a typical small liberal arts school. While much larger research universities may have similar equipment as Skidmore, there are grad students who get priority for using the equipment and they take up the majority of the professor's attention and research openings. Skidmore has amazing, passionate professors in the sciences that love working closely with undergraduates. I actually applied early decision to Skidmore because of the science tour. After I saw the incredibly established microscopy center and learned about the many research projects, I found that Skidmore stood out in the sciences compared to the other schools I looked at (solely small liberal arts school in the north east area).

BMiles: How big are the classes?

Skidmore_Emma: Hi BMiles, so the average class size is 16/17 students. 95% are below 30 students and only 1% of classes are above 50 students. These bigger classes are introduction classes like Intro to Psych or Bio and all have labs attached to them which have a limit of 15 students.

Skidmore_Dara: Hey, BMiles! The average class size is about 16, but that's open to fluctuation. While intro level classes can tend to be a little larger [anywhere from 80-100], they'll always be broken up at least once a week into lab groups of no more than 25. You're always a person here, you're never just a number. But some classes-for me, usually in the Religion department-can be smaller, anywhere from 8-10.

jl340: Geoff - Where did you go in Germany, and what was it like?

Skidmore_Geoff: jl340, I studied in a small city called Freiburg, right in between France and Switzerland. It was definitely an unforgettable experience. I lived with some German students, learned quite a bit of German even though everybody in Germany speaks English, and got to travel all over Europe, including Bulgaria and Greece. The language barrier wasn't a problem, my classes were in English, and my professors were very knowledgeable about their subjects. I've actually developed a new interest in Germany, and am continuing my studies in German, as well as some German history, and plan to go back this summer. Definitely recommend going abroad. I haven't met anybody who hasn't had a good time.

ZRothfeld: What is the Skidmore social life like? I am very uncomfortable at first in social settings. What information can guys give me; have any of you experienced this? Was Skidmore the welcoming place you were looking for?

Skidmore_Dara: Hey, ZRothfeld! The social life is super easy going. Skidmore is more than a college: it's a community. Whatever you're looking for, you're going to find, whether it's a small group of friends who take a night each week to go out to eat, or whether you're a larger crowd to spend time with. The Skidmore populace is so warm, and so welcoming. For me, my social life has revolved around my Theater major: we've become a family. It was almost immediate. Whether or not that's your case, I know you'll find people you'll feel comfortable with.

Skidmore_Anya: Hi ZRothfeld, congratulations on your acceptance! The social scene is extremely diverse at Skidmore. As someone who wasn't a huge fan of high school, I can tell you that the Skidmore social scene is very different than the typical popularity hierarchy in high school. There is a large range of student interests and a ton of clubs on campus that make finding people with similar interests extremely easy. I highly suggest taking part in a pre-orientation program, they bring together new students who are all part of a new, foreign environment. This will immerse you with students coming from many backgrounds, and it will be impossible to avoid making friends. I hope this answered your question!

Skidmore_Geoff: ZRothfeld, that's definitely a good question. I can tell you I was kind of the same way when I first came to Skidmore, and was uneasy about the social scene and what it would be like. Being on a sports team helped me, as there were people that I got to know immediately. However, there were times that I ended up in places where I didn't know anybody, for instance at a party, and I found that everybody was very welcoming, and was more than willing to stop and talk to you and get to know you. Most people at Skidmore are like this, and I definitely go out of my way to try to help new students not feel like new students.

Charlie: What is it like to be a science major at Skidmore, and how much support or advising is available?

Skidmore_Anya: Hi Charlie! I'm a Biology major at Skidmore and love the science departments here! We have incredible research opportunities, you can start research as soon as the second semester of your freshman year, and many students will work intently on the same project for up to three years of their Skidmore Career. Our students are trained as research scientists, and many graduate having presented research at conferences and having co-authored with professors on articles in lead science journals. Additionally, we have amazing facilities. We are one of the few undergraduate institutions to have a microscopy center, which houses top-notch microscopes usually only found at a graduate level school. Our science professors are very dedicated to Skidmore students, and since we don't have a graduate school, undergrads are getting all the research opportunities! Let me know if you have more questions!

jl340: What do you think is really important for incoming freshman to know about the school?

Skidmore_Geoff: There's a wide variety of people at Skidmore, from athletes to artists. There are people who you may not get along with, but there are also people who you will become very close with as well. My two best friends at Skidmore aren't on the baseball team, however, I am still very close with my teammates as well.

Dimitriy: I've been accepted to Siena College along with Skidmore, why should I pick Skidmore?

Skidmore_Altagracia: Welcome Dimitriy, congratulations. I can only speak to why I chose Skidmore. I visited on an overnight stay and had the opportunity to meet students, professors, and attend events on campus. I was so impressed with the students - everyone was so interesting, driven, and passionate. No matter how many interests students have they do not hesitate to fulfill all. Skidmore encourages this- students are encouraged to double major even if the two do not seem to particularly go together. I knew, when I visited, that I would be able to learn from the students. So learning for me happens in the classroom and outside of the classroom in unconventional ways.

H ope this answer helps. I love Skidmore !! Best.

Skidmore_Geoff: Hey Dimitriy, I really don't know a whole lot about Siena, except that its much bigger than Skidmore. If your looking for a smaller school, with a lot of people you will be pretty close to, in my opinion, Skidmore would be the place to be. That being said, I really can't say a whole lot about Siena.

lisaf: What is Jewish life like at Skidmore?

Skidmore_Aaron: Hi Lisa! There is a thriving Jewish population at Skidmore, and students are welcome to be as involved as they wish. When you sign up for Skidmore Hillel at the club fair, you will receive e-mails letting you know of all the activities that they are planning. These range from weekly yoga and meditation classes, and Shabbat dinner every Friday night, to a weekend trip to a cabin on Lake George. There was even a Matzoh "Ball" this past Saturday night to celebrate the end of Passover, complete with music, food, and dancing! Let me know if you have any other questions!

memurray12: How competitive is it to get into the a cappella groups as a freshman?

Skidmore_Dara: Hey, memurray12! I'm not in an a cappella group, but I have a ton of friends who are. There are six a cappella groups on campus, so there are tons of opportunities to get involved. One of those groups is actually all-inclusive: no audition required, which I think is pretty cool. Other than that, the a cappella groups are pretty competitive, in all honesty, but every group sincerely wants you to be with them. When I was a freshman, I auditioned just for fun, and actually got a callback with one group. I didn't get in [I've never been the strongest singer], but they made it really clear that, if you even auditioned, they considered you part of the family.

memurray12: What are the requirements for math and science?

Skidmore_Anya: Hey memurray12! Two of our ten distribution requirements are a natural science with lab and a quantitative reasoning course (math). There are many, many types of classes that can fulfill these requirements. Some popular science classes for non-science majors to take are Physics of Sound where students build their own instruments, Marine Biology, and Ecology of food (there are about 20 other science courses designed for non-majors). For quantitative reasoning, you can take economics courses that include statistics, stage lighting in the theater department, and many others that would not fit under "conventional" math courses.

jl340: What is the most interesting or unique class that you have taken?

Skidmore_Geoff: jl340, the most interesting class I've taken was probably my English requirement during my freshman year. It was called Political Rhetoric, and I'm not even sure if its offered anymore, which would be too bad. Basically what we did was read an editorial from a newspaper such as the NY times or Washington Post, write a small summary of it for every class, and just talk about politics and the way the writers phrased their arguments based on their political viewpoints. I didn't even realize how much I liked it until I decided I may want to do some writing after college.

francis927: Were any of you guys in the Pre-College Program?

Skidmore_Dara: Francis927! How's it going? I did two pre-college programs before coming to Skidmore. Neither of them were here, but I will absolutely recommend that you take as many opportunities to do such programs as you can. They definitely got me used to college life and all that comes with it.

elaine: When do I need to determine my major?

Skidmore_Altagracia: Welcome elaine! You do not need to choose a major until the second semester of your sophomore year. This gives you some time to explore your interests. By the time you determine your major you most likely would have already fulfilled general requirement courses and requirements for your major.

Dimitriy: Are the teachers and students easy to get along with at Skidmore? And how supportive are the teachers?

Skidmore_Dara: Hi, Dimitriy! In short, the answer is YES. Skidmore seriously operates on an "all boats rise" philosophy. My professors have all been great, in every department. There was one week where I spent every single morning with one professor, working so hard to understand what I hadn't been. Not once did he kick me out, but rather he actually brought me coffee. I wouldn't say that that's at all uncommon. And the students? Are awesome. Everyone has each other's backs. I was in this one particularly tough philosophy class last year, and my classmates and I met in the dining hall almost every night to work together. All boats rise.

Skidmore_Altagracia: Dimitriy, Everyone on this campus is easy to get along with. I mean it. This is something I learned since the first time I stepped foot on campus and remains true today. Even students who come to visit often express how impressed they are with how friendly and approachable students around campus are.

This also goes for professors. We are a small campus and do not have to share our professors attention with grad students because we do not have a graduate program on our campus so professors have heaps of time they can give to students. They run on an open door policy which means if a professor's door is open outside of their office answers you are welcome to chat with them. And I have never met a professor who did not keep his or her door open and was not eager to chat with students so as to actually get to know them. I also still keep in touch with professors I had semesters ago, because they care !

P.S I just got an email from one of my professors saying she will be hosting class in her home and will be cooking "good food". Just saying, way cool.

Sean: I'm not really into drinking and drugs and all that stuff, and I've heard there is no pressure to do any of it, but is there a social scene outside of that? Or do most people just go to parties all the time?

Skidmore_Anya: Hey Sean! Skidmore is a great place to be for students not interested in drinking and drugs because of the huge number of events we have each year (~3500 events/year)! While it is a college campus and drinking and drugs do occur, it is extremely easy to avoid and there is a large community of students who choose to abstain. We have dances, movie nights, comedians, lectures, and tons of other obscure and fun events on Friday and Saturday nights that many students choose to attend rather than taking part in the party scene.

memurray12: What have your favorite elective courses been?

Skidmore_Geoff: Hey memurray12, my favorite elective course so far has been Business Law. I took it my freshman year, and studied the law surrounding business such as contracts, civil law, etc... The professor was excellent; she knew her stuff inside and out, and was able to communicate very effectively. She was a very tough grader, and I got a B+ despite the effort I put in, but it was definitely one of those courses where you really wanted to do the work for the professor. I'd recommend taking it regardless of your major.

Skidmore_Emma: Hey memurray12, some of my favorite elective courses have been ones that are in topics that are not related to psychology or art. I really enjoyed a history class on the British Empire- the professor was an amazing lecturer and the reading was entertaining. I have also really enjoyed some sociology courses as well- one is called Individual in Society and looks at how people interact with each other and society.

francis927: This is for Aaron: So I'm planning on majoring in music and something else (undecided) what advice do you have and what do you plan to do with that major after college?

Skidmore_Aaron: Great question, especially since I'm graduating in just two weeks! One of the great things about Skidmore is that you can be as creative as possible with your coursework. In my year there are two other students double majoring in music and psychology. One will be attending graduate school for music therapy, and the other will be doing research on how music can effect cognition. I am currently applying to two fields of work: college admissions as well as arts administration, hopefully to work in a music venue. In my senior seminar in music last semester we were visited by about a dozen Skidmore grads who were involved in music. These alumni ranged from entertainment lawyers, to music producers, to music critics, and everything in between!

ZRothfeld: I want to be a filmmaker. I understand that Skidmore doesn't offer that, but does that really mean anything? Will there still be opportunities for me to excel in Film, and make a career out of it?

Skidmore_Dara: ZRothfeld1! Do it! One of the coolest things about Skidmore is that you can design your own major, and I actually have a few Film Major friends here. Between the Theater and the Studio Art departments, you'll make it work. Even outside of the departments, you can work on your own projects. A ton of my friends have gone through Skidmore to make sitcoms/webseries/documentaries/short films during their time here. Also, there are a ton of classes outside of filmmaking. As it were, I'm in a French Film class this semester, and it's quickly become my favorite class. So, yes: Skidmore will support you, and will absolutely help you on your path to becoming a filmmaker.

Kate2003: Why did you guys decide to go to Skidmore over other colleges?

Skidmore_Geoff: Whats up Kate2003? To be perfectly honest, I chose Skidmore because they chose me. I was recruited to play baseball here, and that was kind of the tipping point. Granted, there were a few other schools who wanted me to play for them, however, the coach here made a point to call me about once every two weeks for my entire senior year of High School, and really made it seem like he wanted me to play for Skidmore. That being said, I liked the campus aspect of Skidmore (some city schools were recruiting me), as well as the wide range of academics, as I had no idea what I wanted to study coming into college.

francis927: What influenced your decision to attend Skidmore?

Skidmore_Dara: Hey, francis927! For me, it was a bunch of things. For one, the Religious Studies department is entirely academic: not faith-based at all. Everything we do is sociological, anthropological, historical, etc. Furthermore, the freedom within the department has allowed me to focus on Hinduism, which I've always wanted to delve into. The Theater department was another draw: it's incredibly strong, and we do a lot of work that's out of the box. Plus, we don't do musicals, and that's a plus for me. Outside of academics, the community here is incredible. When I was looking at schools, the Admissions team here really stressed the Skidmore Community and how it is just that, and it's lived up to every expectation.

Skidmore_Emma: Hey Francis927, what set Skidmore apart from the other colleges was the community. I found that here at Skidmore the people are so open and welcoming that I felt very at home on campus. I find people here to be friendly and willing to help out even if they don't know you.

Skidmore_Geoff: Hey francis927, my decision to attend Skidmore was very heavily influenced by baseball. I was recruited to play here, and probably wouldn't have looked here if it hadn't been for that. My mom used to tell me that any school that I looked at had to pass the "broken leg" test. This was that if I broke my leg and couldn't play, would I still want to go to the school? I kind of blew this off in high school, however, looking back, I would definitely say that Skidmore passes that test, and I would absolutely stay here if I had a career ending injury.

LeahM: Dara, you mentioned that students can design their own major? How does that work exactly?

Skidmore_Dara: What's up, LeahM? You can absolutely design your own major: if you have an idea, talk to your advisor[s], and they'll point you in the right direction. A good friend of mine designed a major in Genocide Studies, combining her interests in history, sociology, anthropology, religious studies, and more. With your advising team, you'll pick the classes that could potentially apply to the major you want to create.

Charlie: I'm considering being a physics major- can anyone who has taken a physics class at Skidmore describe to me the teaching style and approach in this type of class?

Skidmore_Anya: Hey Charlie! Our Physics faculty are truly wonderful! I am a Biology major and have only taken Physics I and Physics II here at Skidmore but I know many of the faculty well. Physics is a very hands-on department, we have a woodwork shop as part of the physics department where students build elaborate circuits and amazing sound technology. Some examples are an acoustic levitator that can hold up a pure drop of water in mid-air by sound waves and a rubin's cube, that will shoot flames along with music when hooked up to an ipod. Also, we have some amazing resources for astrophysics. We have access to the hubble telescope and Arecibo, which is the largest telescope in the world that takes up an entire hillside in Puerto Rico (it's in Golden Eye, the James Bond movie). Students travel down to Puerto Rico over spring break to work with Arecibo. Physics classes are quite small, and all physics students get plenty of individual attention. Let me know if you want any more details!

jl340: Any advice for incoming freshman (other than being open to new things and new people)?

Skidmore_Dara: JL340: TAKE SO MANY RISKS. Try new things! Eat things you never thought you would, hang out with people you never thought you would, take classes you never thought you would. Read, write, try, just dive in. And don't be afraid, either: the people here-both students and faculty members-will catch you.

Anastasia: Can you tell me a little bit about what your academic profile looked like in high school? AP classes, community service, extracurricular, etc?

Skidmore_Altagracia: Welcome Anastasia, during my time at the High School of American Studies, I took 4 AP classes, 4 college courses, was a member of the Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, and the varsity cross country team and, the varsity tennis team. I also was the vice president of the Key Club- a community service group, the president of the Dance team, and tutored at a local middle school.

Keep in mind Skidmore College looks at everything. For instance, grades and test scores are not everything. Other things like commitment to particular interests are also important to the admissions counselors. And interviewing never hurts as well !

Skidmore_Emma: Hey Anastasia, during high school I participated in athletics for all four years, was president of the Student Council my senior year and a member for all four, I was editor of the yearbook my senior year, and my school required at least 30 hours of community service. As for classes I took 6 AP classes over the four years and tried to challenge myself academically while taking classes I enjoyed. I recommend that you show what you are passionate about for your academic profile and challenge yourself. You do not need to have a certain amount of honors/AP classes but should show that you are willing to explore your interests!

cecilia: I have a question for Geoff, how difficult would you say the curriculum has been for your majors?

Skidmore_Geoff: Hey cecilia, I would say that it hasn't been over the top difficult by any means, however, it hasn't been a breeze either. Neither major is a very large commitment compared to some others (I know Biology is pretty large), and I've been able to fit both of them in in time to graduate. There is a lot of writing involved, as well as analyzing of articles, books, etc... There isn't a lot of homework from class to class, however, generally each class will have 2-3 papers to write, as well as a mid term and a final. The professors are pretty tough grading wise, it's pretty tough to get an A, but a lot of the professors are more than willing to work with you to improve on anything, from writing, to analyzing, to participation in class.

Sky: Are you graded in the sciences by absolute knowledge or on a curve where some are always doomed to fail no matter how much they know?

Skidmore_Anya: Hi Sky! I have taken many, many science classes here and have never encountered a class with a curve. As far as I know, curves really don't exist in the sciences. If you study hard and know the information, you will certainly get a good grade.

jl340: What is the most interesting or unique class that you have taken?

Skidmore_Dara: jl340: Your questions are awesome! I love this! Right now, I'm head over heels for my French Film class. We're focusing on Renoir, Truffaut, and Leconte, and I'm hooked. That class is the reason I'm turning into a film buff.

Sean: How difficult is it to double major?

Skidmore_Geoff: Whats up Sean? Double majoring hasn't been that difficult, especially with those two majors. There are a few courses that overlap, and there is more than enough time in four years to complete them both. I wasn't even really considering IA until I realized I had about half of the courses needed simply by getting my requirements out of the way and taking a few Government courses.

Evan: I apologize if this question is inappropriate, but Skidmore has a reputation for being a "high" campus in the sense that many students use marijuana. How true is this and how does it affect campus life if true?

Skidmore_Aaron: Hey Evan, what a provocative question! Just like at most any college, substance use does exist. Substance use, however, is in no way a defining feature of Skidmore, and the openness and friendliness of the student body really shines in this light. Whether you are one of students who chooses to partake in these activities or choose to stay as far away from it as possible, you will never be judged or looked down upon for your decision. Everyone comes together on campus to have as fun and rewarding of an experience as possible! Having said that, just like in the rest of the country, marijuana use is illegal, and in strict violation of the Skidmore College Handbook. While Skidmore Campus Safety's main goal is to the promote the safety of the students, this includes enforcing the rules that are in place.

LeahM: About designing your own major - so you can take essentially any courses you want and create a major out of that?

Skidmore_Dara: Great question, LeahM! It's a little more than that. Yes, you can absolutely take whatever classes you want here: the great part about the way our curriculum works is that it's roughly 1/3 for your major, 1/3 core requirements, and 1/3 electives. As long as you meet the pre-requisites, you can take absolutely any class [and I highly encourage you to!]. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that they'll all fit the framework of the major you want to create. Here's the link for the page: http://cms.skidmore.edu/sdm/ Hopefully this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions!

LeahM: Would you say that all of the students have a very close relationship? I am technically a part-time student at Boston University (I am a junior in high school) but I know that there is a slight lack of community at the school (partially because it is so large). Would you say that Skidmore students have a strong sense of community and school spirit? A lot of bonding perhaps?

Skidmore_Emma: LeahM, I would definitely say that Skidmore students have a sense of community. That is one of the things that drew me to Skidmore. There are a lot of events on campus which are well attended- students are very supportive of each other in academics, social events and athletics.

Evan: Did any of you attend the London Experience? I am planning on doing pre-med and was wondering if i would have any problems if i chose to go to london. Also, How possible would it be to double major in music and a science while also fullfilling pre-med requirements? If this is not possible, how easy is it to be part of the music department if you're not a music major?

Skidmore_Anya: Hey again, Evan! If I didn't mention my abroad experience when I talked to you in Admissions, I'll tell you all about it now. Although I am no longer pre-med, I have fulfilled all of the pre-med requirements and spent a full year abroad. In fact, I chose to go abroad to participate in a Medical Practice in Policy program in Copenhagen, Denmark to decide if I wanted to go to Medical School. The next semester I went to Australia where I took both science and music courses and did research in the outback. It is very easy to go abroad and be pre-med. If you decide to go to London freshman year, you will put off Introduction to Biology and Introduction to Chemistry until sophomore year. Introduction to Chemistry is required for Organic Chemistry, which is one of the pre-med requirements. You would still be able to go abroad again Junior year in addition to the first year London experience, but would have to take Organic Chemistry senior year (this really isn't an issue, I know a number of people who have done that). Besides Biology, Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry, all you would need to take is Calculus and a year of Physics, which can easily be fulfilled your sophomore, junior, or senior year. Also, double majoring in music and science is very possible!! I know a number of people majoring in that exact combination.

amina: what types of activities are going on afterschool

Skidmore_Dara: Hey, amina! There's so much going on on this campus! There are clubs all over the place, ranging in interest from the academic to the recreational, from the religious to the artistic, even over to the athletic world. We even have a quidditch team, if that's your thing! On top of that, there are always weekend activities: film nights, stand-up comedy in the Spa, dances, and more.

emicon: What are your weekends like? Can you give some examples of what they might include?

Skidmore_Altagracia: Hi emicon, there is so much going on on- campus during the weekends, there is so much to do always. We have over one hundred clubs and organizations on campus and they organize over 3500 events per year. So there should never be a night during the week, and especially on the weekend, where you are thinking to yourself "hmm there is nothing to do". Like I said earlier I love attending on campus events such as music performances, dance performances, theatre performances and comedy performances. And lets not forget lectures and guest speakers. So basically, I enjoy doing it all. I am so sorry there is not much narrowing down in my answer as far as what I do, but I seriously try to see as much as possible. And of course there are the usual parties that occur here and there, on and off campus, and the occasional visits down town. There is just heaps of options. You will never have a dull weekend.

charlottem: Hi! I am interested in sports, music, visual arts, as well as many other things. Would I be able to balance all of my interests and my academic work load at Skidmore?

Skidmore_Emma: Hey charlottem, you would definitely be able to balance all of your interests. One of the great things about Skidmore is you can explore a wide variety. I have been able to balance volleyball, art classes, and my other clubs with my regular schedule. It will take some planning but it is definitely possible!

connie: So any of you seem so art and theater focused- how is Skidmore for a student that is not really looking to study those areas? Also what can you say about Freshman housing?

Skidmore_Anya: Hi Connie! I am a very science focused student, and I have had a wonderful academic experience here. The top majors at Skidmore are English, Business, Psychology, Biology, and Studio Art. Some other majors that are growing rapidly are Exercise Science, International Affairs, and Languages. Although Skidmore was originally known for its strong theater and arts, that reputation is quite outdated and we are very strong in many other departments. While we have some incredible art students on campus, they certainly don't define the academic life at Skidmore.

Skidmore_Geoff: Hey connie, Skidmore does have a lot of art and theater majors, however there are a number of people who major in subjects other than art and theater. For instance, I'm a Government and International Affairs major, and my housemates are Business and Environmental Science Majors, and Exercise Science majors. There are plenty of opportunities for students not interested in the arts.

With regards to Freshman housing, freshman are required to live in the dorms, and will most likely live in triples their first semester. However, Skidmore does give you 300 dollars if you're in a triple, and you may end up getting detripled sometime during the year.

Skidmore_Dara: LeahM: SO MUCH BONDING! The First Year Experience will absolutely foster a serious sense of community, especially between the people in your seminar. But it definitely doesn't stop there. Within departments, people get really close, but I have a ton of friends from classes that are entirely outside of my departments. Because of our small size, it's possible to know as many people as you want. It's also possible to get to know people through non-academics: I've met a ton of my current friends at film nights, at Tang events, and more.

Perri: How does Skidmore accommodate students who may need extra time on exams?

Skidmore_Geoff: Hey Perri, I do know that Skidmore does give extra time on tests to students who need it, such as students with learning disabilities. I'm actually not really sure how exactly this works, I am not one of these students, but I do know it exists.

LeahM: What are the core requirements?
Skidmore_Anya: Hey LeahM! There are nine core requirements: Natural Science with Lab, Quantitative Reasoning (math), Expository Writing (english), Arts, Foreign Language, Non-Western Culture or Cultural Diversity, the First Year Experience, Humanities, and Social Science.

Blaxbro: what classes should you take if you want to get into psychology

Skidmore_Altagracia: Hi Blaxbro, if you are referring to classes you should take in H.S then the answer is you don't need to take any particular courses in preparation. And if you mean upon entering Skidmore, I would say taking the intro course to start with is a great way to go. After that maybe you should explore some 200 level courses such as neuropsychology, personality, applied psychology, and evolutionary psychology. Just to get a taste of what the psychology department has to offer.

rowler: Does Skidmore offer an Honors Program? If so, what does it offer for students?

Skidmore_Emma: Hey rowler, Skidmore does offer an Honors Program, known here as the Honors Forum. Once at Skidmore you can apply to be in the Forum. The requirements are a GPA of at least 3.5, you must take a certain amount of honors credit, and complete a Citizenship project (which is a community service based project for the local community). Some advantages are honors housing and class registration for specifically honors classes. There are also honors available upon graduation within the different majors.

Charlie: Aaron- can you describe your experience in the music program, in terms of both performance and academic music study? I am the kind of person who wants to get involved in as many groups as possible and perform often!

Skidmore_Aaron: Charlie--you sound like my kind of person. I too love playing as much music as I can and have found this incredibly easy to do here! While we are not a conservatory, meaning that music students do still get a liberal arts education through all of our core requirements, there are still tons of musical ensembles both in and outside of our music department. In the music department I have played in the Jazz Band, Orchestra, Jazz Combo, Chamber Group, Clarinet Quartet, Sax trio, and Wind Ensemble. I have taken private lessons in Saxophone, Clarinet, and Sitar while here, and play in a number of student bands on campus. The best example I can give you of the strength of the music scene at Skidmore is to talk about Beatlemania. This is a concert that occurs every fall at Skidmore featuring student bands, each covering their own take on a Beatles song. This year, for the 11th annual Beatlemore Skidmania (falling on 11/11/11) over 50 student bands auditioned for the show! For a school of 2,500 students that's a lot of bands! There are a number of performance spaces on campus, as well as in Saratoga Springs, which means an excess of gigs for any band that wants them!

chappy: Is there anything that you don't like about Skidmore?

Skidmore_Altagracia: Hi chappy, great question. But sorry to say, no. Seriously, nothing. Best.

Skidmore_Geoff: Chappy, I don't think there is anything that I don't like about Skidmore. It's a pretty great place, and I'm definitely glad that I came here

elaine: Hello! I'm an international student from China and I'm going to skidmore this fall. Can you briefly decribe the first year in skidmore. I mean, except for the seminars which are belong to academics fields, what other exciting experiences have you got, whether in academics or in after-class activities?(^^)

Skidmore_Geoff: He elaine, My freshman year was definitely a growing experience for me. I became much more social, got to know a lot of people, and found out a lot about myself. The classes were very different from high school, and that required a bit of adapting, but it wasn't very difficult at all. All in all, I don't think I would be the person I am today without my freshman year of college.

Skidmore_Emma: Hey Elaine! Welcome to Skidmore! The first year at Skidmore is amazing and goes by way too fast. Other than your Scribner Seminar, some of the FYE activities are the orientation (where you do plenty of ice breakers and have a scavenger hunt around campus), get introduced to programs on campus, and get to participate in all sorts of traditions on campus like the big dances and competitions around campus! My first year was a blast and I cannot believe how fast it went!

Sean: I committed to Skidmore knowing there wasn't as much of an emphasis on film or cinema than some other schools, but have you taken any classes on the subject, and if so, how were they?

Skidmore_Dara: SEAN! FILM CLASSES ARE AWESOME! I'm in one now that's focused on three of the great French directors: Renoir, Truffaut, and Leconte. There are other film classes, too: some have focused on Italian cinema, some on the German expressionist movement, and so much more. Also, you can absolutely combine the strengths of the Theater and the Studio Art departments to work on your own films. Or sitcoms. Or anything, really. A bunch of my friends have a web-sitcom they started here. Now that they've graduated, that same group has gone on to become a comedy group.

jl340: Is the workload very heavy, or does it give you enough time to enjoy extracurricular activities?

Skidmore_Emma: Hey jl340, the workload is more than in high school but there is definitely plenty of time to enjoy extracurricular activities. You will find that a majority of people are involved in at least one club or band or chorus or athletic team...and if they are not involved then they will be participating in the events available. There are plenty of fun events happening on campus, and there are plenty of them!

LeahM: Can high school credits or previous college courses transfer and therefore fulfill some requirements?

Skidmore_Anya: If you get a 4 or 5 on an AP exam or have taken a college course, you will get general elective credit for the course but it will not fulfill credit for a major or core distribution requirement. If you wish to place out of an introductory course, you will have to either take a placement exam or speak with the chair of the department about your background in the specific topic.

jl340: If you could change one thing about Skidmore, what would it be?

Skidmore_Geoff: jl340, The one thing I would change would be a new baseball field. In a perfect world I would like to see a major league quality field on Skidmore campus.

francis927: Aaron - How competetive are the music ensembles on campus?

Skidmore_Aaron: Hello again Francis, to answer your question I would really need to know which ensembles you are interested in as the level of competitiveness varies between groups. For choir, we have both a community chorus with no audition required and VCE (Vocal Chamber Ensemble) which is by audition only. Even within our Orchestra the competitiveness varies from instrument to instrument. Let me know if you have a specific ensemble in mind!

emicon: I'm not an athlete, does everyone participate in sports?

Skidmore_Dara: EMICON! I'm not an athlete either. I appreciate athletics, but from the stands, for sure. For me, athletic life is all about the support I can give them. My roommate freshman year was an athlete, and we had the perfect relationship: I went to her practices, and she came to my performances. I'd say that's pretty widespread here.

catherine: Would you say that you are ever bored at Skidmore? It seems to be in a rather confined area.

Skidmore_Dara: Hey, Catherine! In a word, nope. There's so much to do: my housemates and I are always at a loss for time to sit around and do nothing. We're always out at a restaurant for dinner, going pottery painting, catching a movie, playing Apples to Apples...there's far too much to do and far too little time.

Skidmore_Emma: Hi Catherine, I have never been bored at Skidmore. There is so much going on at Skidmore as well as in Saratoga Springs that you will find you are having to choose between different events that you are going to. Also, we are conveniently located three hours between Montreal, NYC, and Boston- there are school trips that go to these areas which allow students to get off campus if they want to. And we are also 40 minutes from Albany which has bus and train stations if you need to get anywhere.

rowler: How is Saratoga-Springs? Are there events for students to participate in? Is the community supportive of students?

Skidmore_Emma: Hey Rowler, Saratoga Springs is a great city! Saratoga Springs has lots of good quality restaurants and little shops/boutiques which are fun to poke around in. It's also beautiful to just walk down Broadway (the main street) and browse. There are also plenty of events for Skidmore students to participate in, like ChowederFest where restaurants sell $1 chowders and you can get a t-shirt for trying a certain number.

rowler: If you do a semester abroad, do you have the opportunity to earn credit for graduation?

Skidmore_Anya: Hi rowler, I actually finished my major while abroad! I went abroad to Copenhagen, Denmark for the fall semester of my junior year and Adelaide, Australia for the spring semester. I got credit for every single class I took abroad, be it either towards my major or as a core distribution requirement! It is extremely easy to go abroad as a Skidmore student, and it's always an amazing life experience...

Skidmore_Dara: Rowler! Absolutely! 60% of Skidmore students go abroad, so your graduation date will not be affected by your time away! The programs that are through Skidmore, as well as the programs that have been approved by Skidmore, will take the credits you earned abroad and apply them to your Skidmore transcript.

Skidmore_Altagracia: Hi Rowler, all credits from the Skidmore abroad programs and the Skidmore approved programs will count for graduation.

GO ABROAD !!!!!! :)

jl340: How much spending money should I bring for my freshman year?

Skidmore_Geoff: jl340, bring as much as you can. Dhall is unlimited, however there are delivery restaurants in town that blow the Dining hall away. And if you don't spend it, you don't lose anything, you still have the money.

Skidmore_Altagracia: j1340, honestly, I literally brought no money...I am pretty sure I had none. And if I did I am sure it was not much. I planned, before arriving, to get a job on campus. There are many opportunities for work on and off campus, in town. There is also so much that you can do to entertain yourself that will cost you nothing. Also, why order food when the dining hall is so amazing and you get an unlimited meal plan? Best.

jl340: What is the most interesting or unique class that you have taken?

Skidmore_Altagracia: Hi j1340, I 100% loved evolutionary psychology. The material was really challenging but the professor, Sheldon Solomon, was just so fantastic. You have got to take a course with him. The course was at 8am...I initially thought, "why am I doing this to myself?". But every morning we had class he never failed to wake everyone up with his humour and energy.

I also loved Theory and Method of the Religion Department. I thought the material was so fascinating. This is the class that influenced my decision to minor in religion- do wish I majored though.

mfly63: Hi! I'm interested in becoming a high school chemistry teacher but from what I've gathered Skidmore's education program only accommodates grades 1-6. Would I be able to get certified anyway by creating my own major?

Skidmore_Dara: What's new, mfly63? My housemate is an Education major, and she's loving it. Right now, as a junior, she's student teaching at a local school. Part of her schedule now is a class in teaching math and science, so I'd say you'll be well equipped for that. While you will have experience teaching grades 1-6 through Skidmore's program, you're by no means limited to those levels. You'll actually be certified to teach when you graduate.

Dimitriy: Are the teachers and students easy to get along with at Skidmore? And how supportive are the teachers?

Skidmore_Geoff: Dimitriy, I have found for the most part that everybody is very easy to get along with, and the teachers are very willing to help students. I can't even tell you how many times I've met with professors to discuss papers or presentations, and they've always been happy to help me out.

lisaf: What accommodations does Skidmore provide for people with severe food allergies? (including peanuts)

Skidmore_Aaron: Hey Lisa--I too have a food allergy (cashews and pistachios)! Dining servies is unbelievably accommodating when it comes to allergies. Depending on the severity of your allergy there are different options that will be offered to you. We even have a test kitchen where your food can be prepared separately from everyone else's. Since my allergy is less severe, I look out for the signs signifying that a product either contains nuts or is nut free. Also, because of the way our dining hall is set up, you can watch the chefs prepare the food and ask them any questions about the ingredients that you may have!

catherine: Hi! At my school one has to be very experienced to get on a team or club, is it possible to make such things at Skidmore without being an expert? There are so many things I'd love to try!

Skidmore_Emma: Hey catherine, you don't have to be an expert to become a part of a team or club. There are groups like varsity teams or some of the acapella groups that require audition. However, there are plenty of groups which welcome beginners or any level of experience to participate!

sberger: What is the advising system like?

Skidmore_Anya: Hey sberger! Over the summer before your freshman year, you will be assigned a temporary adviser chosen based on your interests to help you with course registration for your first semester. Once at Skidmore, the professor of your first year seminar is your adviser until you declare your major. Once you declare your major, you choose a professor in the department to be your adviser. You are required to meet with your adviser each semester before course registration, but the faculty are always easily accessible for questions you may have at any time.

Skidmore_Geoff: Hey sberger, the advising system is pretty straight forward. Basically you meet with your advisor the week before you register for classes, and they go over courses that would be good for you, or that you should take for you major. Additionally, you can meet with you advisor whenever you need to in order to discuss possible internships, summer study options, etc...

jl340: (Geoff) I plan to major in science, education, and psychology, and I would love to study abroad in Germany. Do you think that would be a good option as far as having programs that would suit my interests, or should I look elsewhere?

Skidmore_Geoff: jl340, While the program I was on was government orientated, I'm sure there are programs in Germany that can apply to those majors. The Study Abroad office here at Skidmore is very helpful, and can help you find the program that you're looking for, whether its through Skidmore or not.

charlottem: Do you have to major or minor in music to participate in the performing groups?

Skidmore_Aaron: Hey Charlotte! What I love most about Skidmore is that all classes, clubs, and performance groups are open to all students, no matter their major. When you apply and are accepted to Skidmore, you are accepted into all departments, without submitting a portfolio, recording, or anything of that nature. In short, NO!

johndang2016: How does one really study for a college final? Is it impossibly hard?

Skidmore_Emma: Hi johndang2016, studying for a college final is a lot like studying for a final in high school. You need to make sure to prepare ahead of time and do your best to learn the material. Taking a college final is not impossible but does require time to study. I know I was freaked out by my first set of finals, but I definitely over-hyped them and they were better than I thought.

Skidmore_Geoff: Whats up johndang2016? Studying for college finals is interesting. Basically I go over my notes and whatever study guide the professor gives out, maybe outline possible essay questions, stuff like that. Professors are usually pretty good about telling you the format of the exam and what to study for. Finals may seem intimidating your first time around, but they really aren't anything to really get stressed out about.

Nicole: What SAT score do I need to get in and what Gpa and can freshman hve cars?

Skidmore_Dara: Hey, Nicole! First of all, don't worry about SAT/ACT scores and GPA. Do the best that you can: the rest will follow. Skidmore's admission process does take that into account, but the Admissions crew does take everything into account: grades, interviews, your essay, etc. Also, anyone can have a car on campus, but you don't really need one. We're a part of the regular bus route, and bus access is free with a swipe of your SkidCard. That bus will take you downtown, and from there you can pick up another bus that will get you to Target, the mall, etc.

Dimitriy: Are the teachers and students easy to get along with at Skidmore? And how supportive are the teachers?

Skidmore_Emma: Hey Dimitriy, I think the teachers and students are easy to get along with and are both supportive as well. Students here are supportive of each other and are willing to help out with projects; you won't find that people are cut-throat. Teachers are also supportive and are willing to help you out. That's one of the reasons why I like Skidmore so much is the supportive community you will find here!

connie: What about Communications and Media Studies? could a major be put together for that?

Skidmore_Anya: Communications and Media Studies is not a regular major here, but it can be declared as a self-determined major, which has been done a number of times. Here's a webpage directly addressing the question with an example of a media and communication self-determined major: http://academics.skidmore.edu/blogs/apply2skidmore/2012/02/10/i-know-skidmore-has-a-self-determined-major-how-does-that-workget-created-do-you-know-of-any-student-who-has-created-a-communicationsmedia-studies-major/

Also, I realized that I didn't address your question about freshman housing in my last answer to you. There are no freshman dorms, freshman will be in a suite with two doubles or triples and two singles. The doubles and triples are usually occupied by freshman, and the singles by sophomores. Students are housed around their classmates from the first year seminar, the students from a first year seminar are usually dispersed among one or two floors of the same dorm building.

charlottem: Hi! I am interested in sports, music, visual arts, as well as many other things. Would I be able to balance all of my interests and my academic work load at Skidmore?

Skidmore_Geoff: Hey charlottem, you should be able to balance everything. I know there are a number of clubs that should be able to encompass all of your interest, as well as intramural sports that go on all year long. I don't think it would be a problem at all.

Sean: How is the transportation into Saratoga? How often do you go into town?

Skidmore_Dara:
Hey, Sean! CDTA makes getting into town super easy. We're a part of the regular bus route, and that's free for all Skidmore students. Also, that bus can get you to a connecting route that will get you to the Wilton Mall, Target, etc. Also, Broadway is a 10 minute [and really pretty] walk to campus. You can easily bike, too: Campus Safety offers the Green Bikes program, where you can rent a bike for a day. That's the best. I go into town a lot: I was in a performance off campus last year in the upstairs blackbox of Caffe Lena, so I got to spend a lot of time there. Great space: check it out if you're a Bob Dylan fan! But other than that, there's a ton to do downtown, and I'm there a lot. There's nothing quite like reading a good book in Congress Park.

BMiles: Are any of you PoliSci or History majors?

Skidmore_Geoff: BMiles, I am a Government major, which is basically the same as PoliSci, and while I'm not a history major, I know a bunch, and have taken a number of history courses as well.

francis927: Aaron - I'm thinking maybe Jazz Ensemble or a guitar group, how competitive are those?

Skidmore_Aaron: The big band at Skidmore requires an audition, but I would not say it is highly selective. It does depend year to year, as some years 13 guitarists will audition, and other years only 1. The Jazz combos are a little bit more selective, but freshman are definitely regularly accepted into one of the groups. This past semester there were so many guitarists interested that they started an all-guitar jazz combo. For classical guitar, there is a class study of guitar, which has no audition, and a guitar ensemble (performing on the main stage this Thursday!) which is by audition, and moderately selective. Hope this helps!

mfly63: How active is the Pride Alliance?

Skidmore_Dara: Hey, mfly63! SPA, or Skidmore Pride Alliance, is really strong on campus. They have events year round, from panels to lectures to dances, and they offer a really warm, really welcoming environment for anyone and everyone, regardless of sexuality.

jl340: What are your favorite and least favorite things about skidmore?

Skidmore_Geoff: jl340, my favorite part about skidmore is baseball, by far. My least favorite thing is probably that I don't have the unlimited dining plan being a junior living off campus.

Nicole: Is skidmore SAT optional school and does interviews instead

Skidmore_Dara: Hey, Nicole! You do have to take either the SAT or the ACT, but you have your choice! I never took the SAT, and I'm glad I didn't! The ACT was much kinder to me. We do interviews as well, but the interview won't replace a standardized test.

rowler: How is the dining hall (big/small, new/old)? And how is the food?

Skidmore_Emma: Rowler, the food is AMAZING!!! I love the variety of food options and the ability for students to have an input in what food is available. Also the dining hall is a good size and accommodates for all the students.

Skidmore_Dara: What's up, Rowler? The dining hall is fantastic. Let me put it this way: I live in one of the Northwoods Apartments. I have a kitchen. I have a strong background in the culinary arts and want, at some point in my life, to be a pastry chef. And yet, I still take most of my meals in the dining hall. BEST.

LeahM: What have been some of your best/most exciting parts of Skidmore and what have been the worst?

Skidmore_Geoff: LeahM, the most exciting part of Skidmore has been winning the Liberty League baseball championship my freshman year. Truly unforgettable. The worst part about Skidmore are those weeks when all of your assignments and papers seem to line up and you don't have any time for anything besides eat, sleep, class and study. Those are rough.

Charlie: Is Skidmore generally Apple or PC? Do you have any advice about the type of laptop I should bring?

Skidmore_Altagracia: Hi Charlie !! I would say that Skidmore is a Mac campus. It just seems that most students have Macs. But throughout campus wherever there are computers available there are Macs and PCs available. Also the Skidmore Shop sells both PCs and Macs. Best.

Alex: Hi Anya, if you don't mind me asking, what do you plan on doing after graduation with your degree in biology? (I hope you haven't already answered this. I just entered the chat a few minutes ago and quickly scrolled through the conversation.) What made you change your mind about medical school?

Skidmore_Anya: Hey Alex! I am moving to Boston in June to work under a Skidmore alumni in the Allergy and Immunology department at Brigham and Women's Hospital. We are doing a pioneering clinical trial on a disease called Samter's triad. Little is known about this bizarre disease, I'm very excited to be one of the first to work on it! I wanted to take a couple years to work after graduation before applying to grad school so I can have time to decide exactly which area of Biology I wish to pursue. But for the long-term answer to your question, I plan on pursuing a PhD in evolutionary biology or genetics and working as a full time scientist.

LeahM: how important are the academics? Do discussions from class continue outside of the classroom?

Skidmore_Dara: LeahM: Academics are important, but not everything. There's life outside of the classroom. That being said, there's nothing better than when a discussion is so spirited that it organically winds its way out of a classroom. I've become pretty close with some of my professors, and sometimes we'll end up eating lunch together in the Spa, carrying on the conversation. Sometimes that even happens on a larger, full-class scale.

LeahM: do most students live on campus during their four years?

Skidmore_Anya: LeahM, 90% of students live on campus all four years! Our new on-campus apartments are wonderful, and students love the close knit community fostered by our on-campus housing.

Skidmore_Dara: Hey, LeahM! 90% of Skidmore students do live on campus. I'm living in the Northwoods Apartments now, and I'm loving every second of it. That said, there are off campus housing opportunities, and Skidmore will help you find a place to live.

jl340: Do students tend to participate in and pay attention to current events and politics?

Skidmore_Geoff: jl340, I've noticed that as you get into college, people in general start to become much more politically aware. I've had a few government classes with kids who are incredibly smart, and extremely politically savvy. A lot of courses revolve around current events, and require students to stay informed.

Alex: Has anyone had Sheldon Solomon for a class? He was quite entertaining at the welcoming for accepted candidates day and seemed very knowledgable in his field.

Skidmore_Altagracia: Hi Alex !! I have had Sheldon for Evolutionary Psychology and he is also my advisor. I promise he is that cool and awesome and genius- like all the time! His Intro to Psych course is actually the only IntroPsych section that is a large lecture size course. You have to take a course with him!!

Best.

Sky: Skidmore has a fairly liberal reputation, as a conservative will I likely be ostrasized?

Skidmore_Geoff: Sky, I don't think you'll have any problems being a conservative. Personally, I'm fairly liberal, but a few of my closest friends are much more conservative, and its actually fun to talk with them about politics and such.

Skidmore_Dara: Hi, Sky! You're fine, just the way you are. Skidmore, again, is all about community: whatever you believe, where ever you lean, you'll be accepted.

francis927: How do they choose your roomate? Is it random? Through a quiz? Also, are there any Singles available? If so, how do you obtain them?

Skidmore_Dara: Hey, francis927! A large part of first year housing is through your first year seminar: you'll be in the same building as your classmates, for sure. Other than that, there is a survey you'll take, asking if you smoke, if you're a night person, if you like loud music, etc. Skidmore does a great job with matching you up appropriately. As a freshman, you'll probably be in a triple, if not a double. If you do need a single for some reason or another, you can definitely voice that, and Skidmore will respect that need.

lisaf: For english class (and other discussion based classes) are there round tables or group discussion tables where students can gather around to discuss instead of being at individual desks?

Skidmore_Emma: Hey lisaf, for discussion based classes the classroom is either set up with tables or desks in an arc so everyone can see one another, or everyone is gathered around the same table. Either way, discussion based classes focus their set-up on having an open dialogue.

elaine: what about the business major in skidmore?

Skidmore_Aaron: Hi Elaine! Unfortunately none of us at this live chat are business majors, but I'll take a stab at answering your question. I took MB-107, our Intro Business and Management course, and absolutely loved it. Every semester a different company is featured (I worked on Papa John's) and throughout the semester students are broken up into groups of 5 or 6 to work on a business plan for this company. Each group is assigned 1 or 2 peer mentors (upperclassmen business majors) to help them through the process. At the end of the semester, you put on suits, go to a conference room at the local Hilton, and give a 30 minute presentation to local businessmen and Skidmore Alumni. Some years (as when Amazon was featured), the CEOs and CFOs of the company come to hear your business plans! Aside from the intro class, the business department has a wide range of really interested classes. Business is always one of our top majors, and a really great program at Skidmore. An Alumnus, Kevin Freirich, even started an annual business plan competition only open to Skidmore students with top prizes of $10,000, $5,000, and $2,500 dollars!

catherineg: How well do you know your teachers? How do you like the class size?

Skidmore_Anya: Hi catherineg! I've become very close with most of my Skidmore professors, and certainly all of the faculty in the Biology department (my major). Class sizes are small, so professors always know you by name early on in the course and are extremely accessible both in and outside the classroom. Personally, I think that the small class size and individual attention from very personable professors is one of the best things Skidmore has to offer.

Skidmore_Emma: Hey catherineg, by the end of each semester you get to know your professors pretty well. One of my favorite things about having smaller classes is that the professor gets to know you well; I still have professors from my first semester here at Skidmore who recognize me, know my name, and are able to ask how my volleyball season is going or how my other classes are going. The class sizes are really reasonable; the intro classes are on the larger end, but I know people who are in a three person class, and have personally been in a class of seven. There are plenty of opportunities to get these smaller classes, especially as you get into the upper level classes.

Skidmore_Altagracia: Hi catherineg, most classes are small. The average class size is 16 students. Because the classes are small and because we do not have a graduate program on campus there is always time for professors and students to get to know each other. Professors here actually know students on a personal level.

Skidmore_Dara: Hey, catherineg! I love the professors here! My French Film professor is actually working on finding a time where we can all have a film night at his house, complete with a home-cooked dinner. Needless to say, I'm excited. And that's not at all uncommon: I've had cast dinners with faculty directors in the Theater department, and the professor of my freshman seminar had us over for tea. That was lovely. I think the class size that I've experienced [which has been pretty small] has helped that along.

francis927: are pets allowed on campus? really small dogs?

Skidmore_Dara: FRANCIS927! Pets are [kinda] allowed on campus: fish and hermit crabs are kosher to keep in the dorms, but mammals are generally not.

lisaf: Does skidmore have a gospel choir and what is its presence like on campus?

Skidmore_Altagracia: Hi lisaf, we do have a gospel choir. My housemate is actually the creative director of the gospel choir. It is fairly new on campus- it started two years ago- but they already are a large group of students and have made their mark on campus. I went to their spring concert this year, they filled the venue. They are a fun group and sound fantastic. The choir auditions welcome anyone who enjoys singing uplifting music.

Check them out !! http://academics.skidmore.edu/blogs/altagracia/2012/04/09/gospel-choir/

cecilia: Hi! Another question for Geoff. Have you found that Skidmore offers good internships and field-work opportunities for you majors? Careers in International Affairs and Politics are so much about connections, do you think Skidmore offers tools to make those connections?

Skidmore_Geoff: Cecilia, Skidmore definitely offers these tools. I get emails from the Chair of the Government and IA Departments with links to possible internships, career networking events, etc... I've also had meetings with my advisors to discuss potential internship opportunities, and I know most professors are more than willing to write recommendations as needed for applications and such. Theres also a link off the Skidmore website that takes you to an internship database of sorts. I haven't spent much time on it, but it is definitely there.

francis927: Are there any martial arts on campus?

Skidmore_Aaron: Another great question! While I stopped my practice of Tae-Kwon Do when I came to Skidmore, the Martial Arts club is alive and well! It was actually started by one of my friends freshman year, and after a year trial period now receives funding from Skidmore for equipment, travel, etc. They practice mixed martial arts, but whatever you are interested in you can probably find a student who has as much passion as you do!

mfly63: What events does the Pride Alliance participate in? Would it be an issue to openly be part of a same-sex couple?

Skidmore_Dara: Hey, mfly63! Pride Alliance, especially in April, hosts a ton of awareness events. There was just a walk downtown to spread Pride awareness through greater Saratoga. I think there was even just a panel last week! Skidmore's all about the community's safety: we're all here, not just as Skidmore students, but as humans. Everyone deserves to feel safe, in terms of students' sexuality, political alignments, academic interests, social interests, etc., and Skidmore students make that happen. There is absolutely no stigma against being a partner of someone of the same-sex.

Evan: Aaron, I came to visit Skidmore last week and spoke to a music teacher. He mentioned that lessons aren't free unless you are a music major in which case the first year is free. Is this correct? How much do lessons cost outside of that year? Also i find it awesome that Skidmore has a large reddit community :)

Skidmore_Aaron: Hi Evan, as 3 semesters of lessons are required for the music major (and 2 for the minor), these required lessons are free for majors/minors. Aside from this, lessons cost $600 for weekly 45 minute lessons for thirteen weeks, or $800 for thirteen 60 minute lessons. Scholarships for these lessons are available based on both need and merit, and are fairly easy to get so do not be discouraged by the cost!

rowler: Is there a gym available for non-athletes to use on campus?

Skidmore_Emma: Hey rowler, the gym and other facilities are available for non-athletes. Facilities are not just for varsity athletes- obviously they get priority for their practices and games but there are plenty of facilities available for everyone. In the gym we have 3 gyms (each at least 2 basketball courts), two weight rooms, one big cardio room, racquetball courts, a pool, etc. Any facilities that are used by varsity teams there are open hours posted so the campus knows when the facilities are available.

Ellie: How strong is the career center and its interaction with the alumni network?

Skidmore_Altagracia: Hi Ellie, CAREER SERVICES IS FANTASTIC. They will help you find internships and jobs. Career services will help you prepare your resume and prepare for interviews. They also invite alumni to campus and parents of students to discuss their post- Skidmore experiences. We have a great network of alumni that are always so excited to talk to students. Even after getting my job I kept in touch with alumni.

I love career services and I thank them for the preparation they gave me. Megan Jackson was my career services advisor. She rocks. http://skidmorecareerservices.blogspot.com/

francis927: Geoff- is it possible to make it to the mlb from Skidmore, are you planning on that?

Skidmore_Geoff: Hey francis 927, I would love to play professional baseball after I graduate, but the possibility of this happening are very very slim. I would have to get noticed by professional scouts, and then drafted, then make it through the minor league system before making it to the MLB. As a result, I'm doing everything I am doing everything I can to become the best player I can, while planning for a life in the real world with my studies.

LeahM: is there any research at skidmore? For the sciences or anything (I am particularly interested in psychology)

Skidmore_Anya: Leah, there are tons of amazing research opportunities at Skidmore! You can start as soon as second semester your freshman year, and students will often work on the same project for up to three years during their Skidmore career. In addition to research projects being done by every full-time faculty member, there is a 10 week summer collaborative research program that many students participate in. With the summer program, you get free room and board and a stipend of about $1500 to do full time research from June-August. The Psychology department has many projects using Skidmore students as subjects, and I know many many people who have both conducted semester and year-long psychology experiments and participated as the research subject. In addition, many students have co-authored with professors on authors in lead science journals and traveled to conferences across the country and the world to present their research.

LeahM: Would you say you spend a lot of money as students?

Skidmore_Geoff: LeahM, I spend a fair amount of money, but at the same time I have an oncampus job which provides me some income.

Erick_Campos: Knowing that Skidmore counts with a core-curriculum, would you guys tell me what it is like? How do you manage your free time? ( extracurriculars, jobs, etc.)

Skidmore_Emma: Hey Erick_Campos, the core curriculum is not as restrictive as one could think. The core curriculum is there so students explore a wide variety of departments/topics- I have friends who after taking a class for the core curriculum have changed their intended major. It's a good system that Skidmore has in place and I have really enjoyed the classes I have taken for the core requirements. As for managing my free time, you will find that you have a surprisingly large amount of time on your hands. There are a lot of things to do on campus so you may have to choose between activities/clubs/extracurriculars. But you can make your schedule as busy as you would like. Managing your time can be an adjustment, but it is definitely possible!

Sean: Is there anything at Skidmore that you think needs to be improved upon?

Skidmore_Emma: Sean, in my opinion I don't have anything I would change about Skidmore. Skidmore has really become a home away from home for me and I have loved my time here. I cannot believe that I am almost half way done! I wish I could have more time!

elle22: How is the greek life?

Skidmore_Geoff: Hey elle22, there actually isn't any greek life on campus. However, there are a number of clubs on campus, as well as Division 3 NCAA sports and intramural sports.

Ellie: Based on your experience (or that of your friends), what would you consider to be the stronger major - English or Psychology. Also, are there good research opportunities in the Psychology major?

Skidmore_Altagracia: Hi Ellie, both of those departments are strong on our campus and are amongst our popular majors. If you are interested in both there is always the option of double majoring. I would advise taking a course in both departments and deciding what you would like to do.

And about research. There are tons of opportunities to do research. Professors in the department do research and are always willing to look for students to assist in their research. Also, the psych department often sends emails about research and internship opportunities.

Blaxbro: What is it like for a psychology major at Skidmore?

Skidmore_Aaron: Hi! Psychology is one of the most popular majors at Skidmore, and we have a lot of great faculty who are doing really interesting research. No matter what field of psychology you are interested in you can find a member of the faculty to help guide you in your studies. Basically, be lax bro!

jl340: Have any of you stayed in Saratoga over the summer to work or do research? How is the weather (it was so hot yesterday!)

Skidmore_Dara: Hey, jl340! Togatown is great all year 'round, but the summers are awesome. I actually stuck around last summer to take a genetics class when I wasn't working in Admissions. The Arts opportunities are abundant: all of the events at SPAC prevent boredom entirely. Plus, there's a drive-in movie theater nearby, which is the best. Ever. There are other opportunities, as well: sports events, concerts downtown, etc. The weather is fine! I also prefer heat, so I'm a little biased, but it never really got too hot.

mfly63:
 How rigorous is Women's Swimming?

Skidmore_Geoff: mfly63, I can't speak directly on Women's swimming, however I know that most teams on campus practice 6 times a week unless there are games/events, in which case it may be a little lighter. Most NCAA teams are pretty competitive and as a result, a pretty large time commitment, but if you really enjoy your sport, can be the best part of college.

francis927: Aaron - if you could change something about the music program at Skidmore, what would it be?

Skidmore_Aaron:
I love the music program here, and one of the great things is that they do listen to your feedback and change the program accordingly (i.e. bringing in new faculty members to teach specific instruments, etc). Something that I have been asking for but has not happened yet are ear training courses. While it is possible to study ear training in your private lessons, there is no formal class for this. The head of the department, Joel Brown, has told me, however, that he too is pushing for ear training courses. Hopefully we will have them soon!

Sky: How easy is it for a commuting student to integrate and how many co

Skidmore_Geoff:
Sky, all freshman are required to live on campus. As a junior, I live off campus and have no problem staying in touch with all of my friends who live either at school or in Saratoga.

lisaf: What is the ratio of boys to girls? I hear there is a large more amount of girls than boys. Is it on campus or in the classroom?

Skidmore_Geoff: hey lisaf, the ratio of boys to girls is 40:60 respectively. Guys will tell you they love it, however its not quite you may think about it. It really has no bearing on the atmosphere of campus.
