Skidmore -> Everyone
Welcome everyone! Thanks for attending the Skidmore Admissions live chat! Before we
begin, the panelists will introduce themselves.
Student_Kevin -> Everyone
Hi friends, my name is Kevin Berry and I'm a sophomore here at good ole Skidz. I'm
a double-major studying Theater (concentrating in directing and playwriting, but my
real passion is in musical theatre, even though Skidz doesn't have a MT program) and
Gender Studies (concentrating in queer theory and LGBTQIAAP+ history). I'm president
of AIDSBenefit, a fundraising group on campus that puts on performances and donates
all proceeds to the Saratoga HIV/AIDS Coalition and (a new addition this year) Broadway
Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. I'm also a blogger and Tweeter and Facebooker for Communications
and Admissions in the #SS2S (Student-to-Student Online Ambassador Program) My favorite thing about Skidmore is
that you can go out on weekends with your face painted like a zebra and everyone accepts
that as "You Being You." I have recently come to the dramatic realization that the
squirrels here are enormously fearless and will stop at nothing to get at the bagel
in your backpack. I even saw a squirrel yesterday eating an English muffin. Riveting
moment, seeing a squirrel acting so human. But seriously, I will answer ANY question
you have. ANY. #meow
Student_Chet -> Everyone
Hi Everyone, this is Chet Cochrane from Woodstock, NY! I'm a junior here and a Business
and Spanish major. I am also a tour guide, a student blogger and I work with the Big
Brothers Big Sister chapter in Saratoga Springs. I'm happy to answer any questions!
Student_Abby -> Everyone
Hi guys, I'm Abby Silverman. I'm a junior from Sudbury, MA. I am a double major in
Government and Anthropology. I'm a tour guide, treasurer of our Voices for Planned
Parenthood club, and also a member of Hillel. I'm happy to answer any questions!
Student_Matt -> Everyone
Hi, my name is Matt and I am a senior Exercise Science major with a minor in Environmental
Studies. I spend most of my time playing and preparing for Baseball. Last year, I
spent my fall semester studying abroad in Australia. Also, don't be afraid to ask
about summers in Saratoga, as I spent this past summer here. Welcome!
Admissions_Dale -> Everyone
I am Dale Nemer, Associate Director of Admissions. I have worked at Skidmore in Admissions
for over 20 years. I recruit in So. California, Westchester Co., NY, No. Ohio and
Michigan. I co-coordinate all open houses, counselor programs and on-campus events.
Admissions_Jane -> Everyone
Hi, I'm Jane. I am Associate Director of Admissions at Skidmore. I have been at Skidmore
for 20 years, and in the fall I visit high schools in the Boston area. I also coordinate
open houses, accepted candidates days and programs on campus. Welcome to our chat!
SarahRabinowitz -> Student_Kevin
I am interested in becoming a screenwriter. Is there a path of study for me at Skidmore?
Student_Kevin -> SarahRabinowitz
Hi Sarah, well, within the theater department there is a playwriting concentration
but no screenwriting concentration that I know if. There's always the possibility
of self-determining a screenwriting major! Hope this helps! - Kev
Seohnni -> Student_Kevin
How is the food ?
Student_Kevin -> Seohnni
SO DELICIOUS
gsni -> Student_Abby
Is the hillel on campus active?
Student_Abby -> gsni
Hillel is definitely one of the most active clubs on campus! Hillel hosts Shabbat
dinners every Friday night, which always have great attendance. Hillel also has religious
services, as well as hosts events ranging from weekend retreats, to bowling, to baking
challah and more!
stephanie -> Student_Kevin
How accesible is the musical theatre program to students who do not major in the art?
Student_Kevin -> stephanie
Hi Steph - We don't have a specific musical theatre program, but we do have very strong
music and theatre programs. Typically, the theater department does not do musicals
but Skidmore does have Cabaret Troupe, which puts on one musical a semester! And any
student interested in the arts will be SUPER SUPER happy here!
Seohnni -> Admissions_Jane
How is the food ?
Admissions_Jane -> Seohnni
We have a wonderful dining hall that serves many delicious items. There is always
brick oven pizza, a vegetarian option, a pasta bar, deli sandwiches, meals like you
would get at home, fruit, ice cream and cookies to mention a few items. Skidmore students
are very happy with our Dining Services.
Seohnni -> Student_Chet
Is the campus Lively ?
Student_Chet -> Seohnni
Seohnni, thanks for your question! One of my favorite things about Skidmore is how
lively campus is for a student body of roughly 2,400. There are student performances
in music, art, and theater almost every weekend night and the school does a great
job of bringing in off campus entertainment. As far as party life goes there is something
for everyone. We also have over 60 clubs ranging from hiking, skiing, martial arts,
film clubs, and radio stations. Campus life is anything but boring.
Rebecca -> Student_Kevin
1. How are the performance opportunities, since auditions are open to the whole student
body? 2. I plan to double major in theatre and sociology, but one is a BS and the
other a BA, how would that work out? Thanks in advance!
Student_Kevin -> Rebecca
Hi Rebecca! 1. In the theatre department each semester, there is a large-cast mainstage
performance, a smaller black box performance and at least three workshops. So there
are plenty of opportunities to perform in the department. PLUS, there's always CabTroupe
and AIDSBenefit!
brendanchevs -> Student_Abby
For the students from Sudbury, Massachusetts, what made you decide to go to Skidmore
as opposed to a school closer to home.
Student_Abby -> brendanchevs
Sudbury is about 3 1/2 hours from Saratoga Springs - so not that far away! I wanted
to be somewhere a little further from home, but also not too far away and Skidmore
I felt was the perfect distance. Saratoga Springs is really what drove me to Skidmore.
It has something for everyone - restaurants, coffee shops, ice cream shops, shopping!
VanessaMae -> Admissions_Dale
1. Is it recommended that students applying visit Skidmore for a formal interview?
2. In general, what do those in admissions look for in a personal essay? 3. I have
taken Spanish since 7th grade and last year I took an IB level Spanish course. However,
this year I decided that that course was going to be to difficult for me. I am now
doing an independent study of American Sign Language. My question is, does dropping
the IB course look bad and does Skidmore accept ASL as a language credit? 4. I also
started in an IB math class last year and was falling far behind. I took a regular
math course for the second semester. This year I am not taking math. Does only three
years of math count against me at Skidmore? 5. When do applicants receive notification
of acceptance vs. information about financial aid and how does one apply for financial
aid? 6. Finally, I would ask the students, if they could name the main reason they
chose Skidmore as their school? I am sorry I cannot join the chat but
Admissions_Dale -> VanessaMae
Hi VanessaMae, So glad to hear of your interest in Skidmore. While we do encourage
prospective students to visit Skidmore during their college search process, we realize
not everyone can visit. If you live within a three hour radius a visit is recommend,
if possible. Your personal essay is your opportunity to tell us who your are - not
what we will hear from your teachers, etc. We do not give credit for ASL. We do recommend
a student taking the most challenging program they can manage,as well as four years
of each subject area but many factors are considered when reviewing an application.
Students applying in the regular spring pool hear of their decision at the end of
March. the financial aid information is in the acceptance packet.
To apply for financial aid, one completes the FAFSA and profile. Students chose Skidmore
for the many majors, close faculty relations, wonderful town and active student body.
Hope you can visit !
brendanchevs -> Student_Chet
what made you choose Skidmore
Student_Chet -> brendanchevs
Brendan, I have always valued close relationships concerning education. At Skidmore
you are never treated like just a number. Average class size here is around 16, so
you are almost always engaged in class. In addition, professors love to see students
after class hours to answer any questions or concerns. Saratoga Springs is also a
huge attraction to Skidmore. It has the charm and safety of a small town, paired with
the culture and livelihood of a city. I would recommend a visit to campus and downtown
Saratoga Springs to see if Skidmore feels right for you.
Seohnni -> Admissions_Dale
How is the food ?
Admissions_Dale -> Seohnni
Fantastic, healthy, and the Dining Hall responds to students' requests. They will
even make your favorite recipe.
Amanda -> Student_Kevin
I guess my first questions are do you have to be a theater major to be involved in
the plays and are there courses in theater management and stage managing?
Student_Kevin -> Amanda
Hi Amanda! In short, no. We have a broad variety of majors within the department.
Many of our theater majors are double-majors! While there are no courses specifically
in theater management and stage management, the department sees these two areas as
experience-based and so you would need to jump right in and get involved as soon as
you can, by ASMing (assistant stage managing) or doing some work in the management
office!
Martianmartinez -> Student_Abby
I was wondering how good your pre-law or political science programs were.
Student_Abby -> Martianmartinez
We have a great Government program here at Skidmore. It is a very popular majors on
campus and the professors are excellent! As a Government major, you take classes in
American Government, International Politics, Political Theory and Comparative Politics.
There are a wide variety of incredibly interesting classes on many different topics.
Our Government professors do their research on all areas of the world. I have enjoyed
every Government class that I have taken thus far!
stephanie -> Admissions_Dale
How would you describe a typical Skidmore student?
Admissions_Dale -> stephanie
Curious, energetic, flexible, and risk-takers.
stephanie -> Student_Kevin
How would you describe a typical Skidmore student?
Student_Kevin -> stephanie
Happy. Thoughtful. Magic. Creative. Political. Well-rounded. Knows where it's at.
Olivia6 -> Admissions_Jane
Hello, I had a question about the London FYE program. The program looks great- my
only concern would be getting situated when I returned. Do you think students who
did not get that initial two months at Skidmore are missing out and have trouble getting
back into the swing of things?
Admissions_Jane -> Olivia6
Students who go to London for our First Year Experience program visit Skidmore's Saratoga
campus for an orientation right before they fly to London, so they feel like part
of the Skidmore community. The students are in London with two Skidmore professors,
so they return knowing 35 other Skidmore students and two professors. We have an orientation
for the London students when they return to campus in January and a club fair so that
they can sign up for clubs and meet new people. The freshman who started on campus
have not made their best friends in the 4 months they have been here. Yes, the London
students have to be a bit pro-active when they return, but most have said there has
not been a problem getting involved in the campus life and making new friends.
KatieS -> Student_Abby
Is equestrian at Skidmore a club or division sport? I'm interested, if admitted, in
joining the team--would I have to try out? Thanks in advance!
Student_Abby -> KatieS
The equestrian program at Skidmore is excellent! Our equestrian team is Intercollegiate
Horse Show Association, which encompasses nearly 400 colleges. Last year we came in
second in the country, and we were the 2010 national champions! You do have to try
out for the team. You can also take equestrian lessons for credit!
brendanchevs -> Student_Kevin
what made you choose Skidmore
Student_Kevin -> brendanchevs
I chose Skidmore because of the strength of the theater program and the fact that
it wasn't a conservatory program (I got into a few theatre BFA programs and ultimately
decided a conservatory program wouldn't have been the best for me) and because Skidmore
is a small liberal-arts college which gives a better sense of the world around me.
stephanie -> Student_Chet
How is the town around the college, and how accesible is it?
Student_Chet -> stephanie
Stephanie, Saratoga Springs is one of the reasons I chose Skidmore. Many small liberal
arts colleges are located in remote areas where there is not much to do off campus.
This is not the case in Saratoga. If you don't have a car at school you can take a
free bus ride to town every half hour. At times there seems to be more restaurants
than there are people and once you turn 21, there are just as many bars downtown to
explore. In addition, campus and the town of Saratoga Springs are very safe so students
get to enjoy the best of small town and city life.
stephanie -> Student_Kevin
How accesible is the theatre department to students who do not major in the arts?
Student_Kevin -> stephanie
Hi Steph - Very. Very accessible.
Sashreek -> Student_Matt
I have a few questions to ask, for i cannot make it to the live chat. So, What do
students there mostly like about the college? Presumably, the best social event in
Skidmore College? What are the benefits at Saratoga Springs being a Skidmore student?
What happens during the beatlemania? and finally, How do we get into the soccer team?
Thank You....:)
Student_Matt -> Sashreek
Hi Shashreek. These are all very good questions. Skidmore students here are very diverse
and there are many things that students love about being here. For me, I love being
part of the baseball team and being part of my exercise science major. I also love
how talented the rest of the students are. On any given weekend night, you could go
out and see singing, dancing, or theatre. The campus is great and I love being in
upstate New York. On one side of campus there is woods and on the other side is the
beautiful downtown of Saratoga Springs. I now live right downtown and I think it is
the greatest part of being in Saratoga Springs, as the nightlife and shopping is really
great. There are a few great coffee shops and a park that many students like to go
spend weekend afternoons hanging out there. There are also many resources that you
can take advantage in town. For example, right now, for one of my classes we were
paired with a health organization in town. The best social event for me on campus
is no doubt Fun Day, where everyone goes out on the green and enjoys music, dancing,
and a carnival. It's just great. Beatlemania is an event where students and faculty
get to perform Beatles songs. This event usually sells out early as students get very
excited about this.
The best way to get on the Soccer team is to contact the coach. You can find their
email here:
http://skidmoreathletics.com/. You can either walk-on to the team by trying out or be recruited. Contact the soccer
coach and ask him what his personal policy is!
Thanks!
Rebecca.Gorlin -> Student_Kevin
How do you feel about living in Saratoga during the school year? Also, do you enjoy
the proximity to NYC?
Student_Kevin -> Rebecca.Gorlin
Hi Becky (I hope it's okay that I'm addressing you this informally) - I LOVE Saratoga.
So much. So so so much. I can't even handle how much I love Saratoga. Also, regarding
NYC - I'm from Long Island and am in NYC at least 4 days or nights a week when I'm
home, so I do miss being able to get there as frequently when here at school, but
there's so much to do here at Skiddy that I rarely even think about not being in the
city.
Rebecca.Gorlin -> Studnet_Matt
What can you tell me about the women's rowing team?
Studnet_Matt -> Rebecca.Gorlin
I don't everything about the team, but I have a few friends on the team and they love
it. They row on Saratoga Lake, at fish creek. They have an urg room, where they get
in, blast music, and work very hard when it is too cold to go out on the lake. You
can learn more by contacting the coach. Their email is,
jtucci@skidmore.edu.
Thanks so much for your questions!
jessica -> Student_Abby
Is the size of the school (relatively small) an advantage or disadvantage?
Student_Abby -> jessica
Hi Jessica. For me, the size of the school was one of the major reasons I chose Skidmore!
I really wanted to go to a school where I would have small class sizes and be able
to interact with my professors. I love the fact that every professor I have had thus
far still remembers my name!
KatieS -> Student_Kevin
Is there greek life on campus?
Student_Kevin -> KatieS
Yo yo Katie - No Greeks here, but with so many clubs on campus there's a place for
everyone to fit in and to find something to commit to for their four years! It's great.
Lindsey_S. -> Admissions_Dale
Hi! Can you guys elaborate on the First-Year Experience please? Thanks so much, this
is so cool!
Admissions_Dale -> Lindsey_S.
The First-Year Experience is the foundation of your Skidmore life. Fall semester of
your freshman year, you will chose from among the 45 Scribner Seminars offered. These
are inter-disiplinary courses. The professor is your advisor until sometime in your
soph year when you declare your major. The class is assigned an upper-calssman to
be your peer advisor. The other 14 freshmen in your seminar will live in your dorm.
This is a highly successful program and it helps our students find community and understand
our close faculty/student relationships. Our web site can give your more detailed
info regarding the program.
Renae -> Student_Kevin
Based on experience, which is the best freshman dorm?
Student_Kevin -> Renae
Hi Renae - Freshman are spread out through all eight dorms across North and South
Quads, so there is no "freshman dorm." They're all the best. And all the most magical.
Hope this helps!
stephanie -> Admissions_Jane
How would you describe a typical Skidmore student?
Admissions_Jane -> stephanie
I would say there is no typical Skidmore student, except that they are open minded
and excited about learning new things. Skidmore students have many different interests,and
majors. It isn't a cliquey place and students seem to respect each others' talents,
hobbies, interests.
Susan -> Student_Abby
Are students politically active? Is there ever a protest on campus?
Student_Abby -> Susan
Hi Susan! Skidmore is definitely a politically active campus. With the election coming
up, there is definitely a lot of activity. Almost every day you can find a table where
students can register to vote. Last week for the Presidential debate there was a showing
of it in one of the auditoriums, and it was completely full! There are lots of opportunities
for people across the political spectrum to be involved and active!
Susan -> Student_Matt
Do upperclassmen live on campus?
Student_Matt -> Susan
Hi Susan, great question.
Upperclassmen have the option to live on campus or off-campus. I now live off-campus,
close to downtown, which is really great, but many juniors and seniors choose to live
on campus. Right now, they are building new Scibner apartments, where there are 4-7
students living in each. There is also Hillside, which are brand new this year, and
North woods. Those are all apartments on campus that are great options. Many of my
friends have chosen both options for various reasons, but there are housing options
for everyone as an upperclassmen!
alex -> Student_Abby
Hi, would anyone in this chat be able to answer questions about the equestrian team
at Skidmore?
Student_Abby -> alex
Hi Alex, I have a little bit of knowledge about the equestrian program, is there a
specific question you have?
Jennifer -> Admissions_Dale
Can you tell me about applying ED and it's effect on financial aid?
Admissions_Dale -> Jennifer
About a third of our classes are accepted Early Decision. Students receive the same
package regardless if you apply Early Decision versus regular decision.
gsni -> Student_Kevin
Are there any Skidmore traditions that are done on campus and in the town?
Student_Kevin -> gsni
My favorite tradition here at Skidmore is actually in downtown Saratoga. Every year
around Christmas / Hannukah / those holidays, for one night, downtown Saratoga goes
back to Victorian England for the best night ever called Victorian Streetwalk. Everyone
dresses up like they're straight out of a Dickens novel and sings Christmas carols
and eats free food and marvels at the music and lights and smiles a lot. That's just
my take on things!
Jennifer -> Student_Chet
Hello! I have a few questions...can you tell me about the elementary education major?
i'm very interested in pursuing a career in that field. Also, Chet, from a student
perspective, can you tell me about the Spanish major? Lastly, can you give me some
insight on the financial aid when applying early decision? I plan on applying ED.
Do I just send the CSS profile since it will be before 2012 taxes?
Student_Chet -> Jennifer
Hi Jennifer, it's great to talk to a prospective Spanish major! Firstly all education
majors are automatically certified to teach K-6 in New York State, this is a great
option for students who may opt to postpone grad school immediately after leaving
Skidmore. The Spanish department here is small but full of dedicated professors, also
the major here is mostly literature based yet there are many available language based
classes offered here in addition to stellar study abroad programs in Latin America
and Europe (I'm applying to go abroad in Madrid next semester!). I applied ED myself
and, yes you should send in all your financial aid information with the ED application.
If you are accepted, you will receive your financial aid package with your acceptance
letter. Good Luck!
VictoriaHernandez -> Student_Abby
What tips or suggestions would you give to a transfer student?
Student_Abby -> VictoriaHernandez
Hi Victoria! I am not a transfer student, but I actually have a lot of friends who
transferred to Skidmore last year, as sophomores, and absolutely love it! The transfer
students are all housed together so that they have the opportunity to meet other people
in a similar situation. Through classes, clubs, sports teams, etc. transfer students
have the ability to meet their other peers on campus, and have a very easy transition!
Sam_Kristen -> Admissions_Dale
Hi, I'm Can Quynh Phuong. a Vietnamese student who really wants to be accepted to
Skidmore next fall. I want to submit art supplement for Filene Music Scholarship.
Must I have to attend the competition next April?
Admissions_Dale -> Sam_Kristen
To apply for the Filene Scholarship, one submits a CD or DVD of ones work. Finalists
are required to come to campus for the final competition.
Clara -> Student_Kevin
What is the typical day for a student at Skidmore like?
Student_Kevin -> Clara
I wake up, I shower and dress, I go to d-hall, I make an egg or eat some cereal, go
to class #1, eat lunch, go to class #2, then hang out for a while or workout, eat
dinner or go to hot yoga, and then do homework and write papers. I'm usually asleep
by 12:30 or 1. Hope this helps! - Kev
Seohnni -> Student_Matt
How is the food ?
Student_Matt -> Seohnni
DHALL is THE BOMB! Take it from someone who no longer has a meal plan for DHall, that
every time I go back in there is a wonderful experience...They have options for everyone.
I like to go vegetarian sometimes, and that station has so many delicious options.
There are many great food options off-campus too. My favorite (less-expensive) places
are Legends Cafe Subs, Ravenous (crepes), and Putnam Market downtown. When my parents
come out, there are some other really great restaurants that they love to take me
to.
I am a foodie. (not self-proclaimed, my friends tell me). And, I will tell you, I
love the food in Saratoga and on-campus.
stephanie -> Student_Chet
How would you describe a typical Skidmore student?
Student_Chet -> stephanie
Stephanie, when I came here I heard all the stereotypes that Skidmore is extremely
artsy. In my experience, this has not been the case. Skidmore does not seem to have
a "typical" student, yet some common threads I have noticed are: most students here
are well informed, intelligent and considerate of all view points. Yes, there are
artsy students and jocks but there are jocks who make art and artists who play sports.
I love the lack of cliques at Skidmore.
alex -> Student_Abby
Thanks Abby, I know the team is very successful, and I was wondering if that affects
the attitude of the riders and makes them atmosphere more competitive than fun?
Student_Abby -> alex
Riding in college is very different than other sports because you get scored as a
team. All the individual scores matter, so everyone is there to cheer each other on.
So, while it is certainly competitive, the team is very close and supportive of one
another! In addition, team accommodates all ability levels, so there is a place for
everyone on the team, which takes away some of the competitive nature inherent in
sports. Hope this helps!
ConnorNYC -> Student_Kevin
I'm worried that going from NYC to upstate NY I won't find much to do. Is the campus
lively on the weekends? What kind of events and parties are commonly found on campus?
Student_Kevin -> ConnorNYC
Hi Connor, OH YES THE CAMPUS IS AS LIVELY AS A NIGHT ON THE TITANIC ON THE WEEKENDS.
Whether you're looking for comedy shows, a cappella concerts, or just straight up
lookin' to have a grand ole time, there's always something for you to find. Hope this
helps, yo.
lrk39 -> Admissions_Dale
Does Skidmore accept all AP credits?
Admissions_Dale -> lrk39
The Registrars Office decides what classes one receives credit for . Typically they
accept up to one semesters worth of credit toward graduation. As a rule, AP scores
of a 4 or a 5 receive credit. In the sciences a 3 is accepted. However, I would contact
the Registrar for the formal policy. Our web site , under Registrar, explains in more
detail. The Admissions Office likes to see AP classes, of course!
Student_Chet -> Everyone
Hi Stephanie, it's great to talk to a prospective Spanish major!. The Spanish department
here is small but full of dedicated professors, also the major here is mostly literature
based yet there are many available language based classes offered here in addition
to stellar study abroad programs in Latin America and Europe I'm applying to go abroad
in Madrid next semester!.
Rebecca.Gorlin -> Student_Kevin
Yes, Kevin, you may call me Becky if you want. I am currently on a foreign exchange
program for my senior year in France. (Which means that yes it is 2:00 am in the morning
for me right now). Since I am on an exchange now, am I considered an international
student?
Student_Kevin -> Rebecca.Gorlin
Hey BeckBeck. Short answer: No. Long answer: If you're from the United States when
you're not on your exchange in France (which I hear is lovely by the way - I'll be
there next summer for vacation) you are not an international student. However, if
you're normally from South Africa or Laos or any country that is not the United States,
you are an international student. Hope France is fabuFrench!
stephanie -> Student_Abby
If I want to come in undecided, are there any programs or advisors that would keep
me on an organized path that would allow me to explore different things I am interested
in?
Student_Abby -> stephanie
Hi Stephanie. 80% of incoming students, when they enroll, put undecided as their major.
You have until the second semester of your sophomore year before you have to declare
your major, so you have plenty of time to decide if you are unsure. The professor
that teaches your Freshman Seminar is your advisor, and they are there to help you
choose classes and head down the best path for you! Once you declare your major you
get an advisor in that major.
dmaffa -> Admissions_Dale
Hi! I'm Daniel from Lexington, MA! Quick question - So I'm interested in applying
ED and I wanted to do an overnight stay before I officially apply, but apparently
that is not offered. Any other suggestions?
Admissions_Dale -> dmaffa
Do you have any friends on campus you could stay with?
We do have a day visit program where you spend a day with a current student going
to class(es), having lunch in the Dining Hall, and perhaps going to an extra -curricular
club. Please visit our web site under Admissions to sign up for a day visit.
Claycad -> Student_Abby
Can you discuss the abroad programs offered and is this popular among students?
Student_Abby -> Claycad
About 60% of Skidmore students study abroad. Skidmore offers programs in China, London,
Paris, Madrid and Alcala. In addition, there are a wide variety of programs in countries
throughout the world for students to choose from!
Mag -> Student_Matt
How are the sciences programs?
Student_Matt -> Mag
Mag, I am an exercise science major, and many of my friends are in biology, chemistry,
environmental science, and Psychology. One thing I definitely can't stress enough
to you is how great the facilities are. In the exercise science department, for example,
we have the opportunity to actually use some of the top-notch equipment. This makes
classes much more engaging because labs are motivational and exciting. Communication
between students and faculty is great and there are so many opportunities for research,
tutoring, student teaching, and independent studies.
Also, there is a new science building coming...So, that's something to look forward
to. I wish I could be here for that.
BelmiraEtiambulo -> Admissions_Dale
Hello, I have a couple of questions: I would like to know if a non-native English
speaker need to take TOEFL? Is it required to take SAT subject test? Is it possible
to double major in whatever I want or there is a specific requirement? Thank you
Admissions_Dale -> BelmiraEtiambulo
Yes the TOEFL is required if your SAT verbal scores are the lower end. Ask your guidance
counselor if you are not sure.SAT subject tests are recommended but not required.
Double majors are very common at Skidmore due to the wide array of majors on our campus
as well as our inter-disciplinary approach to learning.
Bev -> Student_Kevin
What was your transition like between high school and (Skidmore) college?
Student_Kevin -> Bev
Hi BevvyBB - I went to an all boys' Catholic high school that ran from 7:30 in the
morning to 6 at night. I also had to wear a jacket and tie every day and dress pants
and sensible flats. So the transition to Skidmore was the best thing ever. There are
gals here, so that's nice. And I can wear sweatpants and a flowy t-shirt to class
if I so choose (but I would never. Don't want them fashion police officers httin'
down on me with fashion infractions). The adjustment was great, and now I feel like
Skidmore is the only place I can really be myself. I'm totally 100% happy with myself
here. And also I told myself I'd never wear a jacket and tie again until I get married
or I have to accept a major award.
Jennifer -> Student_Kevin
Kevin you're awesome
Student_Kevin -> Jennifer
THANK YOU JENNIFER, GOTTA BE DA BEST TO BE DA BEST.
Student_Chet -> Everyone
Hi Stephanie, your academic advisor for your first two years is the same professor
you have for your Scribner Seminar. After you declare a major at the end of sophomore
year, you are assigned a professor of your choosing for your last two years. This
professor will be an instructor in the same department as your major. So, you will
be advised by an actual professor all four years. If you would like other views points
there is a separate office of academic advising. There are plenty of opportunities
to step out of your comfort zone, ranging from art to music to dance to just about
anything. If you have any questions specifically let us know!
EmilyS -> Student_Abby
I'm interested in studying psychology, but the school seems very theater/art focused.
Is there still a lot of opportunities for psychology majors as there are theater majors?
Student_Abby -> EmilyS
Hi Emily! There are opportunities on campus for students in all different majors!
The Psychology professors offer research opportunities for students, which is a great
opportunity! In addition to a Psychology major there is also a Neuroscience major,
so there is definitely a lot of overlap between students in those majors.
Mag -> Student_Kevin
What are your favorite clubs on campus?
Student_Kevin -> Mag
Yo yo Mag, here's a little list of my favorite clubs: AIDSBenefit, I'm biased though
since I'm president, and Ad-Libs, which is an improv comedy group and because one
of my best friends is in it (does that make me biased as well?)
Louise_Athens -> Panelist(s)
When I visited my tour guide talked about an outdoors club. I'm really interested
in that, especially with biking. How easy is it to get involved in that club (or others
like it) and how often are there scheduled bike rides?
Student_Chet -> Everyone
Louise, I love weekends at Skidmore. There seems to be something for everyone and
I've never seen someone pressured to do anything they don't want to do. Students go
to athletics events, student performances, concerts and parties.
nicolez -> Admissions_Jane
Can you tell me a little bit about your pre-vet/pre-med or biology programs?
Admissions_Jane -> nicolez
Hi Nicolez. Thanks for your question about the pre-vet/pre-med or biology programs.
Our science departments are extremely strong, and students can do collaborative research
with professors as early as second semester freshman year, and we have a 10 week collaborative
research program over the summer. This experience makes your application to medical
school much more competitive. We have a 76% acceptance rate into medical school; the
national average is much lower. We have a Health Professional Advisory Committee that
meets with students and makes sure that they are taking the courses necessary to be
admitted.
Skidmore's Science/Math Open House every fall is a great open house to attend if you
are interested in science and math. Our website has information on it and the opportunity
to register. This year it is scheduled for October 14th. Anytime you would like to
visit the science departments or classes, this can be arranged through the Admissions
Office.
shay1414 -> Student_Kevin
Hi! I'm Alex from NJ. What's Skidmore like during the winter? I love the snow and
sipping hot cocoa when the cold season comes around.
Student_Kevin -> shay1414
HEY HEY HEY SHAY SHAY SHAY - Skidmore is cold. And snowy. I recently saw a statistic
that I feel like might be a little crae crae, but it probably so so true but the average
snowfall per season is 61.5 inches! THAT'S OVER FIVE FEET, DO YOU REALIZE THAT? OVER
FIVE FEET OF SNOW. Last year, winter was inspired by the Sahara Desert and decided
to stay warm the entire time, so we only got a foot and a half of snow. But this time,
they're predicting the first major snowfall for November 16th, AND I AM SO EXCITED.
nicolez -> Student_Abby
Abby, another question about the equestrian team. I heard that it is hard to make
the team as a freshman due to limited spots. Would there be other opportunities for
me to ride throughout the school year if I don't make the team?
Student_Abby -> nicolez
Hi Nicole. In addition to the equestrian team, you can take riding classes and receive
credit! That is a great opportunity for students of all skill levels to have the ability
to take riding lessons! For specific questions about the equestrian team, feel free
to contact the head coach, Cindy Ford, at
cford@skidmore.edu and you can also check out the riding webpage,
http://skidmoreathletics.com/index.aspx?tab=riding&path=riding
Susan -> Student_Matt
What do students at Skidmore do after graduation?
Student_Matt -> Susan
Hi Susan, like any college there is a wide range of things that students do after
college here. Right now, I have friends that are alumni that are teaching in China,
going to law school, working for a health care software company in Wisconsin, starting
a farm in Vermont, financial advising in Boston, and much much more!
Career Advising is a great resource and I recommend that if you decide to come to
Skidmore you go see them your freshmen year and set out a plan!
stephanie -> Admissions_Dale
If I want to come in undecided, are there any programs or advisors that would keep
me on an organized path that would allow me to explore different things I am interested
in?
Admissions_Dale -> stephanie
Dear Stephanie, Many of our freshmen enter as undecided, in fact, we do not encourage
students to declare their major until the end of their sophomore year. We do have
a flexible core curriculum and students are required to take one class is certain
subject areas by the time they graduate. Our educational philosophy encourages our
students to be well-rounded. Faculty are very accessible and available and work very
closely with students to guide them with their course selection, etc. Importantly,
everyone can study everything!
Renae -> Admissions_Dale
Does Skidmore superscore ACT test scores?
Admissions_Dale -> Renae
Dear Renae, No we do not super score the ACT. Dale
college? -> Student_Kevin
But what is the theater program like and how do you manage without a musical theater
program if you love it so much?!
Student_Kevin -> college?
Hi college? (first of all I think you're name should be COLLEGE! because you should
be excited) - The theatre program is AWESOME. I'm currently in rehearsal for a play
I wrote and am also directing. I manage by watching as much of it online as I can
and by seeing as much of it as I can when I'm home! Huzzah! I have tickets for at
least one show a day over Thanksgiving break. (Two on Wednesday, Two on Friday, and
one on Saturday.) Hope this helps.
Renae -> Admissions_Jane
Is there any way to be in the London FYE group if I will be turning 18 on September
16, 2013?
Admissions_Jane -> Renae
Hi Renae, Unfortunately, students must be 18 by August 26 in order to be part of the
London program. We do have many opportunities to go abroad, and about 60% of Skidmore
students do go abroad, usually junior year. Some students do visit various countries
through their majors.
shay1414 -> Student_Kevin
SO PUMPED KEVIN! BRING IT SNOW!
Student_Kevin -> shay1414
WINTER IS COMING AND I AM PREPARED I HAVE A BIG PUFFY JAY-Z JACKET AND MY BODY IS
READY.
Student_Chet -> Everyone
Hey there Rebecca, we offer three language majors: Spanish, German and French. Languages
here are mostly literature based but there are language based classes and fabulous
study abroad programs to Spanish speaking countries. I will be in Madrid next semester!
If you are interested in other languages, we offer Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Latin
and many self determined course (such as Arabic and Hebrew). Let me know if you have
any questions about specific languages!
stephanie -> Student_Abby
How would you describe a typical Skidmore student?
Student_Abby -> stephanie
Hi Stephanie! There is no such thing as a typical Skidmore student, which is one of
the best aspects of the school! Everyone at Skidmore is unique, which makes the student
body very interesting and it means that everyone is able to feel like they belong!
FionaMcAuley -> Admissions_Dale
Where can I schedule an interview?
Admissions_Dale -> FionaMcAuley
Dear Fiona, We offer on-campus interviews Monday - Saturday. We also offer off-campus
interviews with alumni in many local areas. Interviews are recommended but not required.
EmilyS -> Student_Kevin
Do you miss not having Greek life?
Student_Kevin -> EmilyS
Nope. When I visited other colleges that had Greek life and went to some of the parties,
I was VERY overwhelmed. That might be because it's just so so different to what we
have here, but when I am here, I wouldn't have it any other way.
Louise_Athens -> Student_Matt
When I visited my tour guide talked about an outdoors club. I'm really interested
in that, especially with biking. How easy is it to get involved in that club (or others
like it) and how often are there scheduled bike rides?
Student_Matt -> Louise_Athens
Outdoors club is one of my favorite clubs on campus. Every weekend there are great
events such as hiking, climbing, or even white water rafting. Most events are completely
subsidized.
As far as biking, I know that the outdoors club is involved with that too. 2 years
ago, during spring break, the outdoors club led a bike trip in North Carolina. However,
there is also a bike club on campus. This is a really great place to bike, especially
in the fall. I personally did quite a bit this past summer. You'll love it in upstate
New York.
Bev -> Student_Kevin
What is one thing you would change about Skidmore?
Student_Kevin -> Bev
Definitely less bees. I have a paralyzing fear of bees. They love coffee. I love coffee.
It's terrible.
Claycad -> Student_Kevin
What is your favorite part about Skidmore?
Student_Kevin -> Claycad
Hi Claycad - Fave part about Skidmore: Sunsets on the green.
Susan -> Student_Matt
How active is the Outdoor Club? Was there an event last weekend? Is there one this
weekend? What are they?
Student_Matt -> Susan
Outdoors club is one of my favorite clubs on campus. Every weekend there are great
events such as hiking, climbing, or even white water rafting. Most events are completely
subsidized.
Last weekend was white water rafting, and this week they are climbing one of the high
peak.
Amanda -> Admissions_Jane
By checking the box on the application that says we only want to be considered for
the London trip, does that mean that if we can't have a spot on the trip we won't
be admitted as a student at all?
Admissions_Jane -> Amanda
Hi Amanda. When you check the box on our supplement saying that you would like to
be considered for the London program, you are considered for both. If you are admitted
to Skidmore you are eligible for either campus or London.
Bev -> Admissions_Dale
What sets Skidmore apart from some of the other liberal arts colleges? What helped
you make your final decision to apply for/accept admission?
Admissions_Dale -> Bev
Our wide range of majors, i.e. business as well as economics, 15 inter-disciplinary
majors, strong sciences including neuroscience, exercise science , strong visual and
performing arts, elementary ed, social work and the fact many students double major,
major/minor and make up their own major. Our eclectic student body, wonderful location
(Saratoga Springs!), and many extra-curric clubs and organizations are a draw. Lots
of study abroad too.
Lindsey_S. -> Student_Abby
Hi! Can you guys elaborate on the First-Year Experience please? Thanks so much, this
is so cool!
Student_Abby -> Lindsey_S.
The First-Year Experience is a great program that Skidmore runs. My freshman seminar,
for example, was called Waging War, Making Peace, and was a government related class.
I absolutely loved it, and it sparked my interest to become a Government major! The
courses offered are on a variety of topics, so there is something for everyone! The
professor who teaches your freshman seminar becomes your advisor until you declare
your major - in my case, my seminar professor is still my advisor, as I am a Government
major! The class has about 15 students, and you are all housed in the same dorm, so
that you will get to know people in your dorm from the start. Each seminar also has
a Peer Mentor, which is a sophomore, junior or senior who takes the class with you
and is there to help you in the class - whether it is writing a paper, studying for
an exam, or just with time management - and is also there to help you with any other
questions you might have about Skidmore.
stephanie -> Student_Abby
I love that you all say there is no typical Skidmore Student!! That is exactly what
I am looking for in my college search. This chat has really been such a great help
and is making me want to go to Skidmore more and more!!!
Student_Abby -> stephanie
So glad we could help Stephanie!
Martianmartinez -> Admissions_Dale
How would it be possible to apply for an application fee waver?
Admissions_Dale -> Martianmartinez
Yes , please ask your guidance counselor to submit the appropriate forms with your
application.
Student_Chet -> Everyone
Hello there Ann, studying business and music at Skidmore is actually more popular
than you might think. There are plenty of career opportunities available, wether you're
interested in production, becoming a professional musician, or just working in the
business of music. A background in business never hurts, but don't feel that you have
to major in business if you're not passionate about it. In a lot of cases minors work
just as well, but I would recommend trying some business and music classes as soon
as you can. That way, if you like it continue, if not you can explore other options.
All that being said, I think business and music is an awesome combination!
shay1414 -> Student_Kevin
Also, what is freshman orientation week like at Skidmore? Are there any special activities
to help the transition from high school to college?
Student_Kevin -> shay1414
Yo Shay Shay - Orientation is perfection. But if you want perfection before the perfection
even starts to perfect itself, you can do pre-orientation! Pre-orientation is a whole
bunch of programs in a topic/subject/activity - theatre, Japanese drumming, SkidNews,
canoeing, rock climbing - and is the best. Then regular orientation begins and you
meet up with your Scribner Seminar and make the best of friends. I hope this helps.
LOL.
Sam_Kristen -> Admissions_Dale
If I submit art suppplement later than ED deadline, will it hurt my chance? And if
my art supplement is not quality enough, will it also hurt my chance?
Admissions_Dale -> Sam_Kristen
It is advisable to send the art supplement with or shortly after submission of your
application so that it can be reviewed along with your application. As it is not a
required submission, it will not hurt your chance of acceptance.
Susan -> Student_Kevin
Please describe the relationship between a freshman and the advisor. How often do
they meet? How much guidance is offered?
Student_Kevin -> Susan
Hey Sooz - First years meet with their advisors at least twice a week in class for
the first semester and once or twice a semester outside of class to plan academics
and pick classes for the next semester. If a student is really struggling, they can
schedule more meetings with their advisor. Hope this helps. Kev.
KatieS -> Admissions_Dale
I have two questions about recommendations. How many teacher recommendations does
Skidmore require? And are supplemental recommendations from coaches accepted?
Admissions_Dale -> KatieS
Dear Katie, Two teacher recs are required but you can send an additional one(s) if
you would like. We'd love to hear from your coaches as well!
stephanie -> Admissions_Jane
How heavily does the admissions office look at SAT and ACT scores?
Admissions_Jane -> stephanie
Hi Stephanie,
Skidmore does ask for either the SAT or ACT. We take the highest scores of any test
you have taken, but your scores are not the determining factor for admission. Your
transcript is the most important piece of information we consider. We look at the
courses that your high school offers, the ones you have chosen to take, and your grades.
We know that your success in high school is a better predictor of how you will fare
in college.
Mag -> Student_Kevin
What did you do last friday night?
Student_Kevin -> Mag
Hi Mag - What a question! I went home after class, and went to hot yoga between 5:30
and 7pm, then came home, ate an apple, showered, and climbed into bed and watched
The New Normal for the rest of the night. Saturday night is a whole nother question.
:-)
Bev -> Student_Abby
What sets Skidmore apart from some of the other liberal arts colleges? What helped
you make your final decision to apply for/accept admission?
Student_Abby -> Bev
Hi Bev. I think one thing that really sets Skidmore apart from similar liberal arts
colleges is Saratoga Springs. The location was one of the major reasons I chose Skidmore.
When I was looking at colleges, one of the things I was looking for was a school not
in "the middle of nowhere." Saratoga Springs has so much to offer Skidmore students
- there are restaurants of all type, coffee shops, ice cream shops, clothing stores
- anything you could possibly want, and its only a 10 minute walk away!
Student_Chet -> Everyone
Hi Alyssa, business is one of our most popular majors here. Double majors here are
pretty standard, as long as you finish all of the requirements for both majors. One
reason people decide not to double major is that it doesn't leave much room to explore
academics outside of those majors. However, if you are passionate about both, go for
it!
alex -> Student_Kevin
Hi, Do you feel that Skidmore is a generally happy campus? Or that students are too
stressed or too busy to really relax and have fun?
Student_Kevin -> alex
YES SKIDMORE IS THE HAPPIEST EVER.
Clara -> Student_Kevin
I am from Cleveland so I have to ask what's the snow like? Is there a lot? and is
it good packing snow?
Student_Kevin -> Clara
Hi Clara - The snow is white and cold and hurts if your bare skin is in contact with
it for a while. Yes, there is a lot. And yes, the snow is the best for making igloos
and snow forts.
shay1414 -> Admissions_Dale
Hey! What's the music program like at Skidmore, in particular the orchestra? I play
the violin. I was wondering if I would be able to participate in the program without
actually becoming a music minor or major.
Admissions_Dale -> shay1414
It is considered a very strong Music Department. You do not have to be a music major
to participate in classes nor the orchestra, nor other musical groups. We just opened
our new Zankel Music Bldg. - state of the art!
LT -> Student_Matt
Matt, can you give me some idea of how much time baseball takes up in your week? Do
you practice year-round? How comfortable is it balancing a sport and academics?
Student_Matt -> LT
LT- In the Fall We play four days a week. Its my favorite part of the year. We practice
at 4 o'clock, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday mornings.
Throughout the later fall and winter, you are on your own with your teammates getting
ready for the season. We try to take this seriously too, but this part of the season
is not considered mandatory.
The spring is when it really picks and we have short practices 4 days a week and games
on Saturday and Sunday.
Overall, it does take quite a bit of time, but it so rewarding. I have made some of
my best friends on the team, and I have had my greatest memories on the field. The
athletes at Skidmore are a great bunch of kids and they are also very committed to
academics. The average GPA of an athlete tends to be higher than the average of the
rest of the campus. In that sense it is easier, because it forces you to be organized
and disciplined. You also will get great support from the older kids on the team,
Student academic services, and your coach.
Mag -> Student_Kevin
Sounds fun- I've always wanted to try hot yoga. What was Saturday night?
Student_Kevin -> Mag
Hi Mag - Hot yoga is not for the faint of heart. It's so detoxing. And Saturday night
was TOGA PARTY, which was a part of Senior Class Weekend. Everyone was dressed in
their classical Grecian and Roman best and just danced the night away. So much fun.
Jennifer -> Admissions_Dale
What is the best way for me to show Skidmore how much I would love to attend? (Plan
on EDing and already had an interview)
Admissions_Dale -> Jennifer
Dear Jennifer, Applying ED is the best way to show us your appreciation of Skidmore
and all we offer.
Jennifer -> Student_Abby
Do you think you have enough down time between school work/jobs? (esp. if double majoring?)
Student_Abby -> Jennifer
Hi Jennifer! Yes, being a double major still allows you plenty of down time! I am
an active member of many clubs, including the treasurer for one! Being a double major
certainly does not limit you in what activities you can be involved in on campus!
Student_Chet -> Everyone
Hi There Clara, first off if you live in the dorms (as all freshman and sophomores
do) you have an unlimited meal plan so a lot of your time will be spent in our dining
hall. Classes generally run about an hour and twenty minutes but there is no standard
number of classes you might have during a day. Also expect a few hours of homework
every night. Weekend life is great here, there is everything from athletic events,
parties and performances.
laurajen95 -> Student_Kevin
What is your favorite thing about Skidmore, and where is your favorite place on the
Skidmore campus?
Student_Kevin -> laurajen95
Hey Laura/Jen/1995 (Are you one person? Two people? A year?) And fave thing I already
said above. But my favorite place on campus is the middle of the South Lawn on a cloudless
night. I go out there with friends and lay there and just stargaze. Every time we're
out there someone says "Guys this is real life. I'm so glad we're here."
Emma_Brand -> Admissions_Dale
So I'm a bit confused about my test scores. My SAT is 1640 and my ACT is 27. Which
should I apply with? I already interviewed and they told me I'm very Skidmore-ly.
I'm also applying Early Decision and I'm really hoping that I can get in.
Admissions_Dale -> Emma_Brand
Dear Emma, I recommend submitting both scores. We take the highest into consideration.
So glad you appreciate Skidmore enough to apply ED!
Susan -> Admissions_Dale
Do you know if any students went into the Peace Corp or worked for Teach for America
in the last few years?
Admissions_Dale -> Susan
Dear Susan,Recent graduates have enrolled in both!
brendanchevs -> Student_Matt
For the students from Sudbury, Massachusetts, what made you decide to go to Skidmore
as opposed to a school closer to home.
Student_Matt -> brendanchevs
I thought that the distance was perfect. I wanted to be outside of Massachusetts,
but still be close enough that my parents wouldn't mind making the drive. They come
all the time, and I can go home whenever I feel like it (There's a bus to Framingham
and I have a car).
Rebecca -> Student_Kevin
Hi, I want to double major in theatre and sociology, but one is a BS and the other's
a BA, how would that work out?
Student_Kevin -> Rebecca
Hi Rebecca - A double major in Soc and Theater would work out well. One of my best
friends is a Soc/Theater gal and she's doing very well. My double major, gender studies,
is very similar to Soc, so we're in similar boats here.
Le -> Admissions_Dale
May I ask about your requirements, as in SAT scores and such
Admissions_Dale -> Le
Dear Le, Either the SAT and Act are required and SAT IIs are recommended but not required.
The most important factor we consider is your transcript, the rigor of your program
and your grades.
Student_Chet -> Everyone
Hi Alyssa, sorry I forgot to answer the digital media component of your question.
I am a student blogger here, there are opportunities to find on campus employment
in our media services center, and we have radio and television stations. Hope that
answered your question!
KatieS -> Student_Abby
How helpful is Skidmore with placing students in internships?
Student_Abby -> KatieS
Hi Katie! Our Career Development Center here at Skidmore is great at helping students
find for internships! Whether you need help drafting a resume or practicing interview
skills, the Career Development Center is always available to help! In addition, there
are often internship opportunities in Saratoga Springs and the surrounding area, and
they will send out e-mails to the relevant majors recruiting Skidmore students - I
have a friend who is an intern at the Saratoga County Court this semester! Professors
are excited at the opportunity to write recommendation letters you may need for the
internship application. Skidmore students are also great at taking the initiative
and creating opportunities for themselves - for example, this summer, I was lucky
enough to get an internship at the Israeli Consulate in Boston, which was an amazing
experience!
nicolez -> Admissions_Jane
What exactly are you looking for when you read the essays for the Porter Science scholarship?
Admissions_Jane -> nicolez
Hi Nicolez; The Porter Committee is comprised of representatives from each of our
science and math departments. The committee is looking for students who have shown
a passion for science and or math, and that enthusiasm can be articulated in the essay.
Rigorous science and math courses, good grades in those areas, and high testing are
also important
factors in the selection process. The committee is also looking for some outside research
if available in your area.
Rebecca -> Student_Chet
Is alcohol/drug use big at Skidmore? Would I feel ostracised if I abstain from it?
Student_Chet -> Rebecca
Hi Rebecca, great question. As I've mentioned before today one of my favorite things
about Skidmore is that no one is really pressured to do anything. We have amazing
performances (both student run, and off campus talent) almost every weekend night,
athletic events and plenty of people just choose to hang out with friends. We have
no frats or sororities here which adds to the inclusive environment we try to perpetuate
here. Hope that was helpful!
Josh -> Student_Matt
Hi. What is the neuroscience program like at Skidmore? If I major in neuroscience
will I still be able to branch out into various scientific fields like chemistry and
biology? I may want to go into Medicine and just want to know how broad the field
is and what my options are.
Student_Matt -> Josh
Josh, you can definitely branch out to other scientific fields. I have neuroscience
students in a few of my exercise science courses. As far as medicine, there is a pre-med
club on campus and you will have to fulfill some requirements, some of which will
line up with some of your neuroscience courses. Hope that helped!
Jennifer -> Student_Kevin
Do you think you have enough down time between school work/jobs? (esp. if double majoring?)
Student_Kevin -> Jennifer
Hey Jenny from the Block - Yes, as a double major, I'd say that with some good time
management, I have just the right amount of free time to do me, whether it's catching
up on that episode of Jerry Springer that I missed, napping, working out, or casually
comparing the theories developed by two feminist scholars while sipping Oolong in
my window seat. Gender Studies: Even when you're not, you are.
AmaraG -> Student_Kevin
How is the "Acting Shakespeare" class and musical theater at Skidmore?
Student_Kevin -> AmaraG
Hi Amara - I haven't taken Acting Shakespeare, but all of my friends who have taken
it LOVED IT. And musical theatre - While we don't have a musical theater major, our
music, theater, and dance majors are all INCREDIBLE programs. Cabaret Troupe, the
musical theater club on campus puts on a musical once a semester and it's always a
blast!
Sophia -> Admissions_Dale
Hi, I'm coming into this chat a little late so I hope I don't ask a question that
has already been answered but I was wondering if someone could talk to me a little
bit about the music program at Skidmore.
Admissions_Dale -> Sophia
Dear Sophia,from Admissions_Dale: It is considered a very strong Music Department.
We also have a merit scholarship, the Filene, for talented vocalists and instrumentalists.
You nominate yourself for this scholarship on our supplement and send a CD or DVD
of your work. Please visit our web site for details. You do not have to be a music
major to participate in classes nor the orchestra, nor other musical groups. We have
6 a capella groups, a campus wide choir includes the local community. Skidmore has
many jazz and rock bands and lots of performances - a very lively music scene on campus
and in town. We just opened our new Zankel Music Bldg. - state of the art!
Mag -> Student_Abby
What are your favorite clubs on campus?
Student_Abby -> Mag
There are close to 100 student clubs at Skidmore! These range from athletic and outdoor
clubs, to comedy clubs, to academic clubs, to diversity clubs and more! Its hard to
pick a favorite because they are all great! The clubs on campus are responsible for
hosting a variety of events on campus, so there is always something to do, and there
are lots of opportunities to be involved! If you want to see a list of the clubs on
campus go to
http://www.skidmoresga.org/clubs-a-committees
FionaMcAuley -> Student_Chet
I have the same question as Jennifer! I am also very interested in pursuing a career
in teaching and would love to know a little bit more about that major. Also, does
Skidmore offer a major special education, or just elementary education?
Student_Chet -> FionaMcAuley
Hello Fiona, the greatest attraction of the education department is that students
automatically graduate with a certification to teach K-6 in New York State. Also,
there are on campus employment options for education students at our two on campus
daycare centers. Hopefully you and Jennifer can find more info here!
http://cms.skidmore.edu/education_studies/index.cfm
gsni -> Studnet_Matt
Are there any Skidmore traditions that are done on campus and in the town?
Studnet_Matt -> gsni
Funday (is fun)
Chowderfest (is cold, but delicious). Many of the restaurants in town make chowdah
for a dollah. There's tons of people in town its fun.
There are many more, but those are my favorite
rebeccagolub -> Student_Kevin
Also, what are the performance opportunities available to music majors, specifically
piano performance majors?
Student_Kevin -> rebeccagolub
Hi Becca Golub - Also, pianists are always in high demand! There are a ton of recital
opportunities! In addition, Cabaret Troupe uses a pianist player and this Friday,
AIDSBen is using one in our first Musical Theater Open Mic! Huzzah!
mwettick -> Admissions_Dale
I was wondering if you could tell me about the photography program?
Admissions_Dale -> mwettick
It is a part of our Studio Art Department, as highly regarded major.. It is digital
photo based, as that is what is current. Dark rooms are available in Saratoga Springs.
A number of our alumni go into the photography profession.
Kate -> Student_Kevin
What's the strangest thing you've ever seen on campus?
Student_Kevin -> Kate
Hey Kate - I've grown used to seeing all sorts of craziness on campus, but the strangest
thing I'd see that sticks out from the rest is a girl sitting on the branch of one
of the oak trees (YES. AN OAK TREE. GIRL WAS LIKE RUE FROM THE HUNGER GAMES.) playing
her ukelele and singing an Elton John song. True story.
alex -> Admissions_Jane
Hi, Do you feel that Skidmore is a generally happy campus? Or that students are too
stressed or too busy to really relax and have fun?
Admissions_Jane -> alex
Hi Alex; Skidmore was just listed as #9 on Newsweek's list of happiest campuses! I
hope you will be able to visit Skidmore; I think you will sense a positive energy
on our campus. Students seem to have time for academics but also have managed to be
involved in clubs, sports and an active social life. Learning at Skidmore seems more
collaborative than competitive, and that helps reduce certain types of stress. Our
students know how to work hard and also enjoy what goes on socially.
shay1414 -> Student_Abby
How are the roommates? Does the college do a good job of matching you with a compatible
person?
Student_Abby -> shay1414
Hi Shay. Skidmore does an excellent job at pairing you with roommates. Before you
come as a freshman, you are given a simple survey with questions such as "are you
a morning or a night person," " what kind of music do you like," etc., so that they
can pair you with people they think you will get along with. My freshman year I had
2 roommates, both of whom were very nice and became great friends of mine. On the
off chance that you don't have as positive of an experience as I had, the RAs and
the rest of the Res Life staff does a great job at assisting students who may have
problems with their roommates.
Tracey -> Admissions_Dale
Hi. Are the choices for admission just Early Decision or Regular Decision? There is
no Early Action, correct?
Admissions_Dale -> Tracey
Dear Tracey, You are correct: we offer ED and regular decision.
Emma_Brand -> Student_Kevin
I also have a question about theater. I do the set-designing, costume design, scenic
art and soon stage manager at my school. So I was wondering how easy it is to be involved
with stage crew.
Student_Kevin -> Emma_Brand
Hi Emma - Short answer: Very easy. Just jump right in as soon as you get here.
AmaraG -> Student_Kevin
Thank you Kevin! Skidmore is one of my top choices and I know that its strong in the
performing arts department.
Student_Kevin -> AmaraG
Hi AmaraG - I hope you come here, then! COME TO SKIDMORE, WHERE DREAMS COME TRUE.
Jordyn -> Student_Abby
Did any of you do the first semester in London? If so, was it hard when you came back
since all the other students had already been on campus together for a semester?
Student_Abby -> Jordyn
I did not do the first semester in London, but know quite a few people who did, and
the absolutely loved it! Students who do the London program find that when they come
back it is very easy to be integrated to the Skidmore community. You are constantly
meeting new people - I am a junior and I am still meeting new people in my class -
and therefore no one ever feels as if they are not apart of the Skidmore community!
Sophia -> Admissions_Dale
do you accept creative supplements in the mediums of film or music recordings?
Admissions_Dale -> Sophia
Dear Sophia, We gladly accept additional submissions. Regarding music, please note
if you are applying for the Filene Scholarship with your submission.
KatieS -> Student_Matt
How accessible are the professors?
Student_Matt -> KatieS
All professors have office hours and encourage students to come and ask questions
or just chat. They are very approachable. This is one of the greatest parts about
being at Skidmore.
Many students take full advantage of this, as I recommend that you do, and make great
relationships, get involved in independent studies, and collaborative research. The
Skidmore is a great community of students and faculty and everyone is interested in
helping everyone else out!
Rebecca -> Student_Kevin
Kevin, could you tell me a bit more about AIDSBenefit? It sounds like a club I'd be
really into.
Student_Kevin -> Rebecca
Hi Rebecca - AIDSBenefit is a performance-based fundraising organization that puts
on performances and art shows at least once a semester each to raise funds for AIDS
research - Saratoga HIV/AIDS Coalition & Burton-Mitchell Fund and Broadway Cares/Equity
Fights AIDS. Hope this helps!
FionaMcAuley -> Admissions_Dale
Hello! I am currently a senior in high school and I am taking some pretty challenging
courses this year, such as AP English and SUNY Spanish. I know that my grades aren't
going to be as high as they normally are due to the difficultly of the courses but
will Skidmore take that into account? I'm nervous that the school is going to think
that I'm slacking, or something!
Admissions_Dale -> FionaMcAuley
Dear Fiona, We look very closely at the rigor of your program as well as your grades.
We are glad you are challenging yourself with advanced level work.
Emma_Brand -> Student_Kevin
Thank you all! :}
Student_Kevin -> Emma_Brand
YOU ARE WELCOME EMMA BRAND YOU ARE SO WELCOME COME TO SKIDMORE IT'S THE BEST
shay1414 -> Admissions_Jane
Hello everyone! I was wondering if you could tell me about merit scholarships. Would
I need to apply separately for those, or does the common app include this during the
process?
Admissions_Jane -> shay1414
Hi Shay1414,
Skidmore's financial aid is all based on demonstrated need, except for our Porter
Scholarship for excellence in math and science, and our Filene Scholarship for excellence
in music. Information about those scholarships can be found on the Skidmore Supplement.
You check the box relating to those scholarships and follow the instructions.
ConnorNYC -> Student_Chet
I am interested in studying writing in college, what kind of options are available
to me at Skidmore? Will I also have good opportunity to study theater, political science,
etc. even with this major?
Student_Chet -> ConnorNYC
Hi there Connor and Shoshlg, the English department at Skidmore is fabulous. We offer
one of three concentrations within the major: literate, creative writing, and expository
writing. In addition to having an incredibly engaging faculty we also have Steven
Millhauser a two time Pulitzer Prize winning author here. To answer the second part
of your question, English goes well with just about anything, it never hurts to be
able to communicate your ideas clearly and understand our language, so go for it.
We also have many students of many different majors involved in our SkidNews program.
hope that Helped!
Phiabird -> Student_Abby
Oh also could i use the pottery facilities even if i would not be a pottery major
or minor?
Student_Abby -> Phiabird
Hi Phiabird. The ceramics classes are definitely very popular classes at Skidmore
- and you don't have to be a Studio Art major or minor in order to take ceramics classes,
or any studio art classes in fact! In order to use the pottery facilities you do have
to be in the ceramics class at the time, however.
Olivia6 -> Admissions_Dale
(Sorry my last question was cut off). I noticed on the Skidmore website that the school
"strongly recommends" taking the SAT Subject Tests. I prioritized taking the SAT Reasoning
Test again and decided not to take the Subject Tests because I wanted to focus on
my grades. I am planning on doing Early Decision to Skidmore, and I was wondering
if my lack of SAT Subject Test Scores will hurt my chances of getting in?
Admissions_Dale -> Olivia6
Dear Olivia, As SAT IIs are NOT required, it is not a problem if you do not submit
them.
EmilyS -> Student_Matt
Are the athletic events well attended? Do the teams support each other?
Student_Matt -> EmilyS
The athletic facilities are mostly right on campus and thus students will stop by!
As far as athletes supporting other athletes. You better believe it. Baseball players
are reffing volleyball games, volleyball players are chasing after foul balls. I go
to a lot of basketball and hockey games, but a lot of my friends are soccer players,
so I'll stop in there occasionally too!
shan902 -> Student_Chet
How are your business programs?
Student_Chet -> shan902
The idea of studying business at a liberal arts was very attractive to me. I have
many different interests outside of business and I am able to explore them here. We
do offer courses in finance, marketing, accounting, advertising, and international
business.
shan902 -> Student_Kevin
does skidmore have any traditions?
Student_Kevin -> shan902
Hey Shan - I already answered my first favorite tradition, so I'll chat about my second
and third fave traditions: Wafflefest and Fun Day. Wafflefest is the night before
finals start. Scenario: free waffles and breakfast food and dessert pizza for all.
Scenario: A ton of very full stomachs ready to study for the rest of the night. Fun
Day: A day of fun. A day of mystery. A chance to let loose and be a kid again.
1114 -> Student_Abby
what are some of the most popular majors?
Student_Abby -> 1114
The top five most popular majors are, in no particular order, Psychology, Studio Art,
Business and Management, Government and English. However, theres is no such thing
as an "unpopular" major on campus!
Josh -> Student_Matt
Are there any research opportunities available for freshman?
Student_Matt -> Josh
Josh, there are definitely research opportunities for Freshmen, starting in the spring
semester. I recommend talking to professors about summer collaborative research as
you get the opportunity to take a really big part in the research and ENJOY SUMMER
IN SARATOGA! Great question.
Lindsey_S. -> Student_Kevin
Thank you all so much for this! I look forward to visiting next month!
Student_Kevin -> Lindsey_S.
LINDSEY WE LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING YOU!
Skidmore -> Everyone
Okay folks, we have five minutes left. This is the last call for questions!
KatieS -> Student_Kevin
Thank you guys so much! This was really helpful and it definitely strengthened my
interest in Skidmore!
Student_Kevin -> KatieS
KATE KATE - THAT'S SO GREAT! COME TO SKIDMORE YAYY!
Sam_Kristen -> Student_Abby
How about internships in Skidmore?
Student_Abby -> Sam_Kristen
Hi Sam_Kristen! Our Career Development Center here at Skidmore is great at helping
students find for internships! Whether you need help drafting a resume or practicing
interview skills, the Career Development Center is always available to help! In addition,
there are often internship opportunities in Saratoga Springs and the surrounding area,
and they will send out e-mails to the relevant majors recruiting Skidmore students
- I have a friend who is an intern at the Saratoga County Court this semester! Professors
are excited at the opportunity to write recommendation letters you may need for the
internship application. Skidmore students are also great at taking the initiative
and creating opportunities for themselves - for example, this summer, I was lucky
enough to get an internship at the Israeli Consulate in Boston, which was an amazing
experience!
henrymszor -> Student_Chet
What kind of ways do students participate in community service on campus?
Student_Chet -> henrymszor
Henry, our most popular community service club is Benef-Action is our most popular
community service club here, they deal with volunteer work at hospitals, soup kitchens
and community centers. I personally work with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saratoga
Springs, where I meet with an "at risk" youth on weekends to be a positive role model.
If neither of these options interest you there are plenty of other opportunities in
town and on campus.
Kate -> Student_Matt
What kind of study abroad experiences does Skidmore offer? Have any of you ever studied
abroad?
Student_Matt -> Kate
I studied abroad!!! It was awesome! So many students take advantage of this opportunity.
I studied in Australia, and some of my other friends went to New Zealand, Spain, Italy,
Germany, Israel, or wherever!!
Kate -> Student_Matt
This was really helpful! Can't wait to visit this weekend!
Student_Matt -> Kate
You're so welcome. Have fun this weekend! Hope to see you around campus
Enxhi -> Student_Kevin
Is Skidmore diverse? Would someone like me (an immigrant who lives in diverse Brooklyn,
NY) fit in well?
Student_Kevin -> Enxhi
Yes, Skidmore is socially diverse, racially diverse (20% of students identify as students
of color), nationally diverse (6% are international), politically diverse, all of
the diversities. Also, yes, you will fit in. You don't have to worry about not fitting
in. - Kev
Jennifer -> Student_Kevin
Thank you! Kevin - expect contact from me shortly!!!!
Student_Kevin -> Jennifer
HI JENNIFER - OKAY I AM WAITING
Tasha -> Student_Kevin
What kind of food is served in the dinning hall
Student_Kevin -> Tasha
Tasha - DELICIOUS FOOD
eugenie -> Admissions_Jane
How would you describe a Skidmore student? And how financially, racially, politically,
and socially diverse would you say your campus is?
Admissions_Jane -> eugenie
Hi Eugenie,
There is not a typical Skidmore student, although I could say that our students seem
excited about learning, and the opportunity to study in many areas here.
Our population is very diverse; this year we are 24% multicultural, 42% of our students
are on financial aid and others on work/study.Our students seem open minded and have
all types of personalities.
Josh -> Student_Kevin
Thanks for all the help. I'm definitely going to schedule a visit!
Student_Kevin -> Josh
COME TO SKIDMORE AND BE HAPPY
Tasha -> Student_Abby
Hi My name is Natasha Dartey. I'm applying to skidmore this year. What do people do
for fun in Skidmore.
Student_Abby -> Tasha
Hi Tasha. People do a wide variety of things for fun at Skidmore! Every weekend there
are comedy shows, acapella concerts, dance shows, movie screenings, speakers, and
much more. Plus, we are located in the amazing town of Saratoga Springs, which has
plenty of things to do! There is never a dull moment here at Skidmore!
ConnorNYC -> Admissions_Dale
What differentiates Skidmore academics from other liberal arts colleges?
Admissions_Dale -> ConnorNYC
Dear Connor, We offer 65 majors. We are known for our strength in the sciences, including
neuroscience and exercise science, and strong visual and performing arts. Business,
not typically offered art a LA college, is one of our two most popular majors, along
with English. We offer 15 inter-disciplinary majors, i.e. Asian Studies, Gender Studies.
Many of our students double major, major/minor or make up their own major. Very close
faculty/student relationships, study abroad, internships and collaborative research.
1114 -> Student_Kevin
what is the biggest size class you have ever been in
Student_Kevin -> 1114
1114 (I assume you speak binary?) - 22 is currently the biggest class I've ever been
in, my theater history class this semester.
Student_Abby -> 1114
The biggest class I ever took was Intro to Political Philosophy, and it had 30 students.
Sam_Kristen -> Student_Kevin
Thank Abby and Mrs. Dale for helping me out! Kevin, you are so cool! Skidmore rocks!
This chat was awesome!
Student_Kevin -> Sam_Kristen
SAM_KRISTEN That makes me so happy that someone thinks I'm cool. Now if you come here,
I'll have a friend.
FionaMcAuley -> Student_Kevin
Thanks for the advice everyone, it really helped!I hope to visit soon!
Student_Kevin -> FionaMcAuley
FIONA - I AM SO HAPPY WE COULD HELP. ROCK ON, MILEY CYRUS.
Sophia -> Student_Matt
also is it easy to get involved in the college radio station and is it true that there
is a student run organic farm that supplies the dining hall with delicious food?
Student_Matt -> Sophia
The Radio station is easy to become a part of and many students come up with very
creative stations for WSPN. I listen to it myself...If you make a visit its 91.1
There is a student garden that is run by the environmental action club, and its definitely
a lot of fun
mwettick -> Student_Chet
Also - can you tell me about the big sib little sib program in Saratoga? How does
it work? Thank you so much!
Student_Chet -> mwettick
Hey mwettick, the BBSS club works pretty simply. You are paired with an "at risk"
youth from the local community. Usually these "littles" are about 5-12 years of age
and you are usually paired with a "little" of your same gender. This will be your
little for as long as you decide to participate in the program. Every other Saturday
you play with your little either in a group setting or one on one. it's a great opportunity
to get involved and give back to the community.
Louise_Athens -> Student_Kevin
Thanks for all the info! Can't wait to visit again ASAP and get my ED application
sorted!
Student_Kevin -> Louise_Athens
LOUISE - GET THAT APPLICATION IN! HUZZAH!
rebeccagolub -> Panelist(s)
Thanks, I'm excited to apply!
henrymszor -> Student_Matt
What are some of the most popular study abroad programs?
Student_Matt -> henrymszor
Study in Spain, and Italy are very popular, but I was in Australia and there were
a few others from Skidmore too. Students go all over the world!
Skidmore -> Everyone
Alright folks, that's it for questions tonight! The panelists will work on answering
the questions they have now, but we will not take any more tonight. Thanks for participating!
eruben -> Admissions_Dale
Is developing your own major difficult?
Admissions_Dale -> eruben
Not difficult due to the strong faculty/students relationships. It does require a
bit of leg work on the student's part to make sure it is a rigorous sound proposal.
Kate -> Student_Kevin
This was really helpful! Can't wait to visit this weekend!
Student_Kevin -> Kate
KATE YOU LUCKY DOG GETTIN' HERE FOR SKIDMORE IN THE AUTUMN. CRISP COOL WIND AND A
PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE - SOUNDS LIKE MY KIND OF VISIT.
SamRose -> Student_Chet
Are there martial arts clubs on campus?
Student_Chet -> SamRose
Hi SamRose, the martial arts club focuses mainly on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and kick boxing
and I believe they meet 4 or 5 days a week. Not sure what your background is but it's
nothing competitive and it's certainly all inclusive.
Sarah -> Admissions_Dale
Will it hurt my chances of getting in if I apply regular decision instead of early
decision? I don't want anything binding, but I really love this school.
Admissions_Dale -> Sarah
Dear Sarah, It will not hurt your chances but be sure to let us know of your high
interest!
rebeccagolub -> Student_Kevin
Thanks, I'm excited to apply!
Student_Kevin -> rebeccagolub
YOU GOT IT REBECCA GOLUB. YOU ROCK, ROCK STAR. I LOVE ROCK AND ROLL SO PUT ANOTHER
DIME IN THE JUKEBOX BABY I LOVE ROCK AND ROLL SO TAKE A LITTLE TIME AND COME TO SKIDMORE.
stkrakoff -> Student_Abby
Hi all, I apologize if this question has been already posed -- I'm joining the party
just in the knick of time. I was wondering how politically active the student body
at Skidmore is. For example, are the ongoing Presidential debates a topic of conversation?
Are people comfortable expressing their political views? Thanks a million.
Student_Abby -> stkrakoff
Hi stkrakoff! Skidmore is a definitely a very politically active campus, all the time
and especially right now for the upcoming election. The Presidential debate last week
was shown in one of the largest auditoriums in campus, giving students an opportunity
to watch it together, and the auditorium was completely full! Almost every day various
clubs are running voter registration drives. You can always find people talking about
politics at Skidmore, and opinions range from throughout the spectrum. Skidmore is
a very accepting community, and thus everyone feels that they can voice their opinion,
whatever it may be!
Seohnni -> Student_Matt
is there a pre-med major?
Student_Matt -> Seohnni
There is no pre-med major, but there is a pre-med club, and all of your pre-med requirements
are offered at Skidmore. 76 percent of people applying from Skidmore to Med School
are accepted.
Tasha -> Student_Kevin
Thank you guys. I'm sending my application to Skidmore ASAP i hope I get in.
Student_Kevin -> Tasha
YOU GOT IT TASHA, COME AND EAT SOME OF THE DELICIOUS FOOD WITH US.
rebeccagolub -> Admissions_Dale
I am interested in pursuing a major in music. Is that a popular major at Skidmore
and is there any audition necessary?
Admissions_Dale -> rebeccagolub
Dear Rebecca, It is a very highly regarded major in the world of Liberal Arts colleges.
Auditions are required for the Filene Merit Music Scholarship. You are placed in music
classes according to your ability once you arrive on campus.
Enxhi -> Student_Abby
Is the 61:39 female-to-male ratio overwhelming in campus life?
Student_Abby -> Enxhi
Actually our current ratio is 59:41! Its definitely not noticeable. I have never had
a class where I felt that it was all girls; in fact, my freshman seminar was 10 boys
and 5 girls! That just goes to show that the ratio really does not overwhelm the experience
here.
nicolez -> Student_Chet
Do a lot of students have cars on campus? What are some other ways to get around,
such as to the town of Saratoga Springs?
Student_Chet -> nicolez
Hi Nicole, you are allowed to have a car on campus all four years. If not it's certainly
not difficult to get around town. There is a bus that runs into town every 30 minutes,
and every hour to the mall part of town. If not carpooling is really popular here!
Tasha -> Student_Kevin
I will Kevin
Student_Kevin -> Tasha
YOU BETTER!
EmilyS -> Student_Chet
Are there opportunities to volunteer in the community?
Student_Chet -> EmilyS
Emily and Susan, our most popular community service club is Benef-Action is our most
popular community service club here, they deal with volunteer work at hospitals, soup
kitchens and community centers. I personally work with Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Saratoga Springs, where I meet with an "at risk" youth on weekends to be a positive
role model. If neither of these options interest you there are plenty of other opportunities
in town and on campus.
Jordyn -> Admissions_Jane
What does Skidmore offer for students who want to pursue the premed route? What is
the medical school acceptance rate?
Admissions_Jane -> Jordyn
Skidmore's excellent science courses make our students extremely well prepared for
medical school. Our students can do collaborative research with Skidmore professors
as early as second semester freshman year. We also have a 10 week collaborative research
program over the summer with excellent presentations at the conclusion of the program.
This makes Skidmore students very competitive for admission to medical school. Our
acceptance rate to medical is 76%, while the national average is around 47%. Our Health
Professions Advisory Committee helps our students every step of the way in medical
school preparation.
Emma_Brand -> Student_Chet
Thank you all! :}
Student_Chet -> Emma_Brand
No Problem! Cheers!
Enxhi -> Student_Matt
Hello, how strong are the sciences in Skidmore? Also, do graduates typically go straight
into work or do they go to post-grad?
Student_Matt -> Enxhi
The sciences at Skidmore at excellent. Research is always going on here, and the equipment
is excellent. The exercise science department was just awarded a 1 million dollar
grant for a study on firefighters!
There is a very wide variety of places that graduates go. Many of my friends are going
straight to graduate school, others are seeking jobs, others are looking to travel.
Jordyn -> Student_Kevin
Thank you so much! :)
Student_Kevin -> Jordyn
YOU ARE SO WELCOME
Susan -> Admissions_Dale
If students transfer after their freshman year, what is the most likely reason?
Admissions_Dale -> Susan
Dear Susan, We actually enjoy a very high , 95%, retention rate. Students transfer
from Skidmore for several reasons, i.e. change of major, distance from home, wanting
a larger college/university. Likewise we enroll a number of transfers into our college
each year: students who seek what we offer.
Josh -> Student_Matt
Thanks for all the help. I'm definitely going to schedule a visit!
Student_Matt -> Josh
You are welcome Josh
Phiabird -> Panelist(s)
thank you!
eugenie -> Student_Abby
Your favorite thing about Skidmore?
Student_Abby -> eugenie
My favorite thing about Skidmore are the small classes. I love the fact that all the
professors I have had get to know my name, and still remember me even if I took their
class first semester of freshman year. It really adds to the experience when you feel
like you have a personal connection with your professors, and have a chance to have
great discussions in your classes.
Student_Chet -> Everyone
You all are so welcome, I had a great time. Good luck with everything, hope to see
you here!
Student_Kevin -> Everyone
So friends, it's been grand. So so grand. Wonderful meeting all of your quirky web
presences. I love you all and hope you all come to Skidmore and stay here for forever,
or at least the 4 years within which most of our students graduate. If you want to
keep up with my craziness and ask questions (with an option for anonymity for those
real life questions) follow me on Twitter at
@skidkevinmore or read my blog at academics.skidmore.edu/blogs/kevin/ . Hope to see you all soon!
Measure in Love, Kev.
alex -> Admissions_Dale
Hi, if an applicant applies ED 2 is that considered any differently than an applicant
who applies ED 1 in terms of their wanting to go to Skidmore?
Admissions_Dale -> alex
Dear Alex, ED 1 and 2 are considered equal. More students apply ED 1, however.
Studnet_Matt -> Everyone
Thanks everyone for coming! This was great!
Student_Abby -> Everyone
Thanks for all the great questions! I hope our answers helped! Good luck with everything,
it was fun!
Tracey -> Admissions_Jane
My son has 2160 on his SAT's and a weighted GPA of 4.1. How are the math and science
programs there-would he be a good fit?
Admissions_Jane -> Tracey
Hi Tracey,
Our math and science courses are extremely strong. Classes are taught by professors
who have done research in their fields, and are at Skidmore because they love to teach.Our
students have been accepted at excellent medical schools and graduate programs all
over the country. I urge your son to visit Skidmore. He can tour the science facilities,
sit in on a class, as well as chat with a professor in his field of interest.
rebeccagolub -> Admissions_Dale
Are there private lessons every week for music majors?
Admissions_Dale -> rebeccagolub
Dear Rebecca, Private lessons are offered. I believe it is every week, but please
check the web site for details.
Susan -> Panelist(s)
Thank you for all the helpful answers. This was extremely informative!
Tasha -> Admissions_Dale
What percentage of freshmen are accepted to skidmore every year?
Admissions_Dale -> Tasha
Dear Tasha, We accept a frosh class of approximately 640. Each year is a different
year in Admissions and the average acceptance rate is 35 %.
Admissions_Jane -> Everyone
Thanks for you questions. We hope you be able to visit Skidmore!
Jane
McKenna -> Admissions_Dale
Will it hurt my chances of getting in if I can't visit before I apply?
Admissions_Dale -> McKenna
While we encourage students to visit we realize this is not always possible. If you
live within 3 hours of a college it is advisable to try to visit. Demonstrated interest
is considered at Skidmore. If you cannot visit feel free to call our office to ask
a counselor any questions.
Susan -> Admissions_Jane
What major employers come to campus?
Admissions_Jane -> Susan
Susan,
We have had many employers come to Skidmore. Companies such as Exxon Mobile, Verizon,
Polo/Ralph Lauren. the Museum of Science in Boston. Imax,Teach for America, Sloane
Kettering, McGraw-Hill, to name a few!
KatieS -> Admissions_Dale
What is the law school admittance rate for Skidmore graduates?
Admissions_Dale -> KatieS
Dear Katie, Our students do very well in terms of law school admittance. The education
at Skidmore is held in high regard and the faculty gives strong guidance to students
in the law school admission throughout process.
Jennifer -> Admissions_Dale
If i am not in AP courses, but am in Advanced courses. I have had many difficulties
family wise over the years. I had an interview at Skidmore already, and this was discussed.
Even though I was not able to balance an AP course load during high school due to
such, I have gotten high grades in my classes. Would my admission decision be looked
at with these obstacles in mind?
Admissions_Dale -> Jennifer
I would advise you to send a short statement explaining your high school experience
and choice of classes. Your advanced level work and strong grades will be considered.
Admissions_Dale -> Everyone
Good bye and thank you for your interest in Skidmore!
Jennifer -> Panelist(s)
Thank you so much for getting to my question even after the allotted time!
Skidmore -> Everyone
Thank you everyone, that's it for tonight! For more information, contact the Admissions
office at 1-800-867-6007 or admissions@skidmore.edu. The transcript for this live chat will be available online tomorrow at http://www.skidmore.edu/admissions/.
