Who can use Skidmore's E-mail for life forwarding service?
Alumni
of Skidmore College may sign up for this service. All
alumni of record have been pre-registered.
To begin using the service, simply sign up for Email Forwarding on SkidNet .
What
is the purpose of Skidmore's E-mail for life forwarding
service?
To
foster communication within the Skidmore Alumni Community.
The permanent e-mail address at the "skidmore.edu"
domain will forward e-mail to your current mailbox. No
more worries about losing e-mail as you move around or
change jobs. This is the last e-mail update you will ever
need to send to your friends and associates!
Who
decides what my Skidmore E-mail for Life address will
be?
We
are using some fairly standard naming conventions. Your
address will, wherever possible, consist of your first
initial, last name and class year followed by "@skidmore.edu"
For example:
lscribner22@skidmore.edu
As
current students become alumni, they will maintain their
student username class and "@skidmore.edu"
so it will be very easy for the Class of 2000 and beyond
to keep in touch after graduation.
What
do I need to have a Skidmore E-mail for Life Forwarding
Address?
You
must have an active e-mail account with an internet service
provider or your employer. The Skidmore E-mail for Life
forwarding service is not a full-fledged email account;
rather, it allows you to establish an e-mail address which
redirects e-mail to your actual e-mail account.
If
your e-mail account changes, you must notify Skidmore
in order to continue receiving e-mail. Simply update your
record in the alumni community and your record will automatically
be updated (usually within 24 hours).
I
already have an e-mail account. Why would I want to sign
up for this forwarding service?
Your
e-mail account will likely change when you move, change
jobs, or change ISPs. If you use this service, you can
give your friends and family this address, and it's the
only one they will have to remember. Whenever you change
your e-mail address, you only need to update your record
at Skidmore -- you won't need to alert everyone to your
new address because e-mail sent to "@skidmore.edu"
will automatically be forwarded to your new address (please
note that changes may take up to 24 hours to be effective).
Can
I use the Skidmore E-mail for Life Forwarding service
if I don't have an email account?
Because
this is only an e-mail forwarding service, it has to work
with an actual e-mail account. You cannot use this service
if you don't have an e-mail account to which e-mail can
be forwarded. There are many places on the Internet that
offer free, advertiser-supported e-mail accounts (such
as bigfoot.com, netscape.net, yahoo.com, hotmail.com etc.)
You can use the Skidmore e-mail for Life Forwarding Service
with such an account.
You've
convinced me. How do I sign up?
The
first step is to register
as a user in the Skidmore Alumni Community. Once you have
registered, you will be assigned a username and e-mail
address (typically consisting of your first initial, last
name, and class year followed by @skidmore.edu)
Start
using your new e-mail forwarding address. If possible,
you might want to set it as your return address in your
e-mail program. Remember to keep Skidmore updated on any
changes to your actual e-mail address. All you need to
do is update your record and the change will usually be
reflected within 24 hours.
What
if the e-mail address I've chosen to redirect my e-mail
to changes?
You're
free to update the address your e-mail is redirected to
at any time. Simply update your record in the Skidmore
Alumni community.
What
if I change my name?
When the service was launched
in January 2000, you were assigned a username and email
address based on your current last name. If you are assigned a married name but would prefer to use your maiden name contact Denise Jenks at djenks@skidmore.edu
