IM Indoor Soccer Rules

(There will be a limit of 7 teams per league)

STARTING THE GAME: A match is played with 6 players per team, one of whom shall be the goalkeeper. A minimum of five (5) are needed to start /continue a game. A ten (10) minute grace period will be given before a game is called as a forfeit. There is an eleven (11) player game roster limit. At all times during the contest, there must be one(1) woman or one(1) man on the field. There is a limit of three (3)varisity players on the court during competition, including the goalie. Those three players can not all be of the same sex. A varsity player is anyone who is currently on a varsity soccer roster this academic year. Any team with a varsity player will automatically be placed in the V-League.
EQUIPMENT: The ball will be a standard indoor soccer ball provided by the Intramural Department. The first team listed will wear light colored T-shirts. The second team listed will wear dark colored T-shirts. (i.e. 1 v 2 - team one would be in lights and team two would be in darks). The goalies will be given colored pinnies to wear. Proper shoes are required. No jogging or black soled shoes, cleats or street shoes are permitted. All jewelry must be removed before start of game.
PLAYING TIME: Games shall consist of two (2) twenty (20) minute halves with a running clock. No time outs. An official’s time-out will be called in the case of injury, emergency or incident in which the official will determine the length of the time-out. There will be a three (3) minute break between periods. League games can end in a tie. However, ties will be broken in playoffs.

PLAYING AREA: Games will be played in the upstairs gym near the dance theater (court 1) and if necessary in the gym near the weight room (court 2). The ceiling is out of play. The ball will be put back into play by an indirect kick directly under the place of contact.

TIEBREAKER PROCEDURES: In case of a tie game during playoffs, a five (5) minute sudden death overtime is played. If the score is still tied after five (5) minutes, five persons from each team take a penalty kick.

KICK-INS: When play is in the Intramural gym, all walls are in play. However, this is not the case when play occurs in the Rec gym. When the ball crosses entirely over the touchlines, it shall be kicked back into the game in any direction from the place where it crossed the touchline by a player of the opposing team. The ball must be stationary on the touchline before being kicked in. The kicker shall not play the ball a second time until another player has touched it. The players of the opposing team shall be at least 3 feet away from the spot where the kick-in is being taken.
FREE KICKS, GOALIE THROWS AND CORNER KICKS: Before any free kick, defending players must be away from the ball at least five yards. All kicks are taken from the spot of infraction except penalty kicks. Kicker should kick immediately following the officials whistle.
- A goal can be scored directly against the offending team in a direct free kick.
-A goal cannot be scored unless the ball has been played or touched by a player other than the kicker before passing through the goal on an indirect free kick.
-When the ball crosses over the goal-line excluding that portion between the goal posts, play continues (ie. ball can be played off wall). On court 2, the net side is out of bounds - attacker kicks the ball out results in a goal kick / defender kicks the ball out results in a corner kick.
- Once the goalie picks the ball up (in play), he has four (4) steps to put it back in play. A goalie cannot bounce the ball or put it down and pick it up again. Goalies may not pick up a ball that has been passed back. Results in an indirect kick.
- Goalies must release the ball within five (5) seconds.

SUBSTITUTION: The number of "flying" substitutions made during a match is unlimited except in the case of the goalkeeper who may only be replaced when the ball is not in play. A player who has been replaced may return to the court as a substitute for another player. A flying substitution is one which is made when the ball is still in play and for which the following conditions shall be observed:
-the player leaving the court shall do so from the half court line.

-the player entering the court shall touch with the player leaving the court and shall not enter until the existing player is entirely off the court.

PENALTY KICKS AND DIRECT KICKS: Penalty kicks will be taken from the foul line. The following will result in a direct free kick:
-charging an opponent violently or dangerously.

-charging an opponent from behind.

-holding the ball.

-striking or attempting to strike an opponent.

-pushing or tripping an opponent.

-slides in an attempt to play the ball whether touching an opponent or not (sliding tackle).

A penal offense by the defense in their own penalty box will result in a penalty kick. Repeated and/or malicious penal offenses may result in an ejection.

Goalies may not pick up a ball that has been passed back.

EJECTIONS: A player will be ejected from the game for violent conduct, serious foul play, using abusive language or of he/she persists in misconduct. If a player is ejected, another player cannot replace him. This means the team has to finish the game with one less player. The ejected player is automatically suspended from league play until reinstated by the Recreation Sports Department.

CONDUCT: The "Honor System" will be used among the players in place of officials when officials are not present. Only the captains may speak to the commissioner and/or official about a questionable call.

The commissioner has the right to throw out a player for any reason the commissioner deems appropriate, including consistent arguing, obscene language, etc.

DISQUALIFACTIONS/FORFEITS: If a player is disqualified for any unsportsperson-like act, he/she will be suspended from league play until reinstated by the Recreation Sports Department. Any player suspended from league play will not receive a championship t-shirt should his/her team win.

Any team with a forfeit will not be eligible for any playoff game regardless of record.

Any team with two forfeits will be disqualified from further league play.

To qualify for a championship t-shirt, a player must have competed in at least two league games and the championship game.

Any disputes should be taken up with the commissioner on site. Any further discussion should be directed to the Intramural Director immediately following the game at ext 8350.
