The College Chartered

The 1922 commencement season must have been a time of personal celebration for Charles Henry Keyes and Lucy Skidmore Scribner, as the state Regents’ approval of collegiate status came just before graduation. The Saratogian commented in a June 10, 1922, editorial, that "in all the history of education for women it is doubtful if another institution can parallel the record" of Skidmore, which had grown in less than a dozen years from "a score of girls studying shorthand and sewing to 400 young women in college."

The class of 1922 included twenty-seven women who earned baccalaureate degrees, more than double the number of each of the previous three years.
