<< Unit 2: Tragicomedy >>

The second unit of CC 223 is devoted to the intersection between comedy and tragedy — that is, tragedy as both genre and as a fact of Athenian life during the Peloponnesian war.

Our readings will include both Aristophanes' last plays, which indicate a deteriorating relationship between comedy and the polis, as well as plays by the tragedian Euripides (c. 485 - 406 BCE).
