Quick Pitch

When people find out that I studied philosophy and religion at Skidmore, they often ask, "How in the world did you end up in the insurance and risk-management field?" The answer is quite simple. After returning home after graduation, my mom told me I had until the end of the month to find a job; and I happened to find a customer service position at an insurance company in York, Pennsylvania. When the company had an opening in their business continuity and disaster planning department I thought it sounded interesting, so I applied and was accepted for the position.

That role sparked my enrollment and subsequent completion of an M.S. degree in emergency management at Millersville University. Since that time I have worked as the radiological hazards emergency planner for Lancaster County Emergency Management, as well as in the safety and regulatory compliance arenas at two large health systems in Pennsylvania.

I have been blessed to be at my dream job since April 2015. As the director of compliance and enterprise risk management at Dickinson College, I get to combine all of my favorite professional activities: organizing and leading emergency preparedness exercises, as well as responding to campus emergencies; ensuring that the college is compliant with the plethora of statutes and regulations affecting higher education institutions; administering our insurance program; developing and reviewing policies; and working with some of the smartest, funniest, supportive, and inclusive coworkers that anyone could ever hope for!

Creative thought matters. Seriously. Skidmore prepared me to ask the "big questions" and to always have a sense of wonder and excitement for learning new things. I have found on many occasions that my philosophy and religion coursework has prepared me for my professional life by teaching me how to listen to diverse opinions and experiences, interact with those who hold different values and goals from my own, and how to communicate in a tactful and courteous manner, even during periods of disagreement.

As the compliance and risk person on campus, I enjoy being continually challenged to find creative solutions that allow our students, faculty, and staff to further the organization's mission, vision, and values while simultaneously keeping them safe. Each day is a new adventure in this line of work!

I live close to the Dickinson campus with my husband, Matt, and daughter, Caroline, who is 4 years old. We just moved to a new house, and are in awe of the mountains that surround us. We enjoy camping, hiking, having campfires, and spending time together and with our extended families and friends. We recently became the parents of two boxer puppies - Hugo and Winifred (nickname Winnie)!
