in, including Lauren Sidor (fish research from her REU summer research), Julia Cavicchi
(rural-urban migration from her study abroad in Bhutan), Dan Caserella (forest ecosystem
dynamics from his summer research on campus), and Zia O’Neill (Bike+Build: Zia’s summer
biking to raise awareness about affordable housing). Location: Palamountain 202

The Environmental Studies and Sciences faculty will give an overview of the ESS Program
and talk about upcoming classes for the spring, internship opportunities, and study
abroad options. Afterward, we will break into groups to talk about our 2 majors:
Environmental Studies and Environmental Science. If you are planning on majoring

in, including Jamila Roth (invasive shrimp research), Bella Bennett (volcanic ash
plume modeling from her study abroad in New Zealand), Miary Rasoanaivo (conservation

Friday, September 23, 3 p.m., ESS hike up Spruce Mountain
All interested students are welcome to join us on a 3-mile round trip hike up a nearby
Adirondack mountain, followed by a pizza dinner.
Wednesday, October 5, 6:30 p.m. – ESS Keynote speaker Jennifer Jacquet: “Guilt, Shame,
and Climate Change”
Dr. Jacquet is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at NYU. She will discuss
large-scale cooperation dilemmas like climate change, and the exploitation of wildlife,
including fishing. She will cover the role of social approval in encouraging cooperation
in policy development.

Informational tables from local environmental and conservation groups will be set
up in advance of the keynote address. If you are interested in finding out about
internship or volunteer opportunities, please come by to talk to local representatives.

Thursday, October 27, 5 p.m. – ESS Advising Meeting
In advance of registration for spring courses, the ESS Program will hold a meeting
to introduce students to the ESS curriculum and answer questions about major and minor
requirements and upcoming courses. ESS faculty will give an overview of the program,
and then students will break into small groups to discuss the different tracks of
the ESS major.
