SSP-100 (025) Jewish Christian Relations from Jesus Christ to Mel Gibson
Matthew Hockenos, Associate Professor of History
What is anti-Semitism today, and how has it evolved over the centuries? This seminar
introduces interdisciplinary perspectives on Jewish-Christian relations, from medieval
depictions of Christ’s passion and crucifixion to more contemporary settings such
as Nazi Germany and Mel Gibson’s 2006 anti-Semitic rant. In this seminar, students
read texts by historians, theologians, philosophers, and political scientists as well
as view films and analyze Holocaust memorials, concluding with an examination of the
growing anti- Semitism in parts of the Muslim world.
