The Barnes Foundation in Merion, PA is a renowned institution in the Philadelphia area with humanitarian and educational pursuits. Established to advance and promote education and the appreciation of the fine arts, the foundation houses both an art collection and an arboretum. The art collection contains many impressionistic and post-impressionistic pieces, as well as paintings and sculptural works from around the world. Additionally, the 12-acre arboretum has a diverse collection of plants, with many notable species including the Metasequoia.

I recorded a single Metasequoia at the Barnes, and there is also a second one at the Barnes owned site called “Ker-Feal”, located about 20 minutes southeast of the Barnes site in Merion. I never received data on this second tree. The tree in Merion came from the Morris Arboretum in 1954. It is currently 100 foot tall with a base of 36 inches in diameter. Impressive size for a Metasequoia, this is a solid representation of the growth potential that the trees have in the Delaware Valley.
