Coker College in Hartsville, South Carolina (not to be confused with the Coker Arboretum) has a Metasequoia of respectable size for the temperate-tropical climate in South Carolina. Located in Hartsville, South Carolina, Coker College was founded as a women's college in 1908. It officially became co-ed in 1969. It is a highly ranked college noted for its excellent student-faculty ratio. With a dynamic and progressive round table approach to teaching, the school is an important liberal arts school in the south.

Coker College features a Metasequoia that grows well in the fairly warm climate of South Carolina. The school is on the border between the Southern mixed forest and the Outer coastal plains region. It is within Hardiness Zone 8, a fairly tropical zone. Winds are light, precipitation is average, and the dominant soil orders are Entisols and Ultisols.

Coker College received a Metasequoia in 1951 sent from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The tree has grown more successfully than the specimen at the Coker Arboretum, reaching a height of 77 feet with a base 36 inches in diameter. These are respectable totals and the 36 inch base diameter is the largest that I have recorded in the southern states.

It is likely that there are not many Metasequoias in this region, so if you live in South Carolina, Coker College is a good bet. I would also recommend checking out the Metasequoias at the North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville, North Carolina, as they are likely the best in the region.
