The Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morristown, New Jersey and the Willowwood Arboretum are both part of the Morris County Park Commission. These arboretums have some of the best Metasequoias in the country. The Frelinghuysen is about 45 minutes east of New York City. Dedicated in 1971, the 127 acre Arboretum is part of the Morris County Park Commission and boasts a very respectable botanical collection along with an educational center. The arboretum centers around a magnificent 19th century mansion.

The Metasequoias in the Morris County Parks Commission, both the Frelinghuysen and Willowwood Arboretums, include some of the most impressive Metasequoias in the country. The Frelinghuysen’s Meta has grown incredibly quickly. Five plants were received in 1972 from a local nursery, and while two have died, the remaining three have grown very well. In 33 years all three are around 80 feet tall with extremely impressive base diameters from 39 to 42 inches. This demonstrates the quick growth rates that Metasequoias have in temperate regions like New Jersey.

If you are in the region, do not miss these trees. One of them is in my Top Ten, receiving very strong scores for growing so quickly. But all three are about the same size. While not quite as significant as Princeton University or the Morris Arboretum, it holds the third highest total on my Average Formula map behind only Princeton and the Rowe Arboretum.
