The Stanley M. Rowe Arboretum in Indian Hill, Ohio, along with the Bernheim Forest Arboretum in Kentucky, show that Metasequoias grow superbly well in the Ohio Valley region around Cincinnati and Louisville. These two sites are the best among my research. The nine acre Rowe Arboretum is in Indian Hill, a suburb of Cincinnati. It was founded in 1926, by Stanley M. Rowe, Sr. He loved conifers, and collected many Red Oaks, European Larches, White Pines, and Scotch Pines which he obtained from the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station. |

The Rowe received two Metasequoias from the National Arboretum in 1952, and they are currently some of the tallest in the nation. Both are between 130 and 135 feet tall, with bases 30 to 35 inches in diameter. These are incredible trees that are the tallest between Princeton University and the Peavy Arboretum. While their base diameters are not massive, 130 feet in 53 years is unbelievable. It is likely that these trees will grow even more. It has been said that Metasequoias have reached 160 feet tall in China, and it is very possible that these trees may reach 150 or 160 feet in height someday. It is great to hear that Metasequoias grow so well in the interior of the country. Clearly in between the Bernheim Arboretum and the Rowe Arboretum, Metasequoias grow well in this Cincinnati-Louisville area.Stanley M. Rowe Arboretum 4600 Muchmore Road Indian Hill, OH 45243 |
