Pregnancy

If you think you may be pregnant you can have a pregnancy test done at Health Services or with an at home test kit that you can pick up at a local pharmacy. Most pregnancy tests can detect a pregnancy within a few days of a missed period or 10-14 days after the pregnancy occured.

You have three choices if you are pregnant: you can choose to have a baby and raise the child, you can choose to have a baby and place the child for adoption, or you can choose to end the pregnancy. There is no right or wrong choice and only you can decide what is right for you.

Remember that you are not alone, you can talk about your feelings with your partner, you parents or someone you trust in your family, a trusted friend, someone you think will be supportive, or someone from Health Services or the Counseling Center on campus. Make sure that you look for a health care clinic that will give you complete information about your options and take care of your health, both physical and mental.

If you are going to continue the pregnancy, you should begin prenatal care as soon as possible, which will include a medical exam to make sure you are healthy and the pregnancy is normal.

If you are considering abortion, you should make your decision as soon as possible. Abortion is safe, but the risks increase the longer the pregnancy goes on.

While you are deciding what to do, take good care of yourself. Eat enough good food, keep your body in good shape, get enough sleep, do not smoke, do not drink alcohol, do not take any drugs or medications -- not even aspirin -- without checking with your clinician.

You can get support on campus through the Counseling Center and Health Services.
