GIS (Geographical Information Systems)

WHAT

GIS is a combination of information, techniques, software, and creativity to present, analyze, manipulate, and interact with data that is geographically referenced. GIS enables a user to combine in meaningful ways geographic information of a variety of different types. For example, demographic information about parts of a city may be shown in relation to that city's environmental, political, geological, or other type of information. One can also create queries of the information, e.g., how many people under the age of 6 live within 100 yards of specified water body in a given county, how many people live within two miles of a Stewarts Shop, how many elderly people live within a mile of a grocery store, etc.
