Honors Forum Fall Induction
[Thursday Sept. 5th, 2002 ] 5 pm - Tang
This first Honors Forum event of the 2002-2003 school year welcomes returning members of the Honors Forum and new members of the Class of 2006. A short program during the reception will feature remarks from the Honors Forum Director and the Dean of Faculty.
Dr. Christopher Pelling to lecture

Dr. Christopher Pelling, McConnell Laing Fellow in Classics, University College, Oxford University and Academic Advisor to Advanced Studies in England (Skidmore Affiliate) will speak about the various interpretations of Caesar from Plutarch to Shakespeare. This event is sponsored by the Departments of English and Classics, the Honors Forum and ASE.
John Tytell to Lecture

John Tytell discusses his recently published memoirs of Beat Generation figures with reference to photographs by his wife, Mellon, whose work contrasts with the New York Times photographs on display in the Tang exhibition, The Tumultuous Fifties, much as the beat writers and artists posed an alternative to the dominant culture of the Fifties. Tytell, a professor of English at Queens College, is the author of the classic study of the Beats, Naked Angels, and numerous other works. Mellon has exhibited at the International Center of Photography in New York City and throughout Europe. Co-sponsored by the departments of English and American Studies, Liberal Studies, Honors Forum and the Tang Museum.
Islam: War and Terrorism
[Thurs. Oct. 24, 2002] 8 pm Gannett Auditorium
The goal of this panel is to examine the relationship between Islam and terrorism, and the role Islamic political movements play in the contemporary world. The panelists will approach the topics from the perspectives of the Islamic legal tradition, Islamic fundamentalism and its role in emerging democracies, and the nonviolent tradition in Islam. The panelists include Assistant Professor of Religion and national co-chair of the section for the study of Islam, American Academy of Religion, Jon Brockopp of Bard College, Frank Griffel of Yale University, Rabia Terri Harris, founder and coordinator of the Muslim Peace Fellowship and Visiting Assistant Professor Laury Silvers of Skidmore College. This event is cosponsored by the Honors Forum and the Department of Philosophy and Religion.
A break-out session will be held prior to the panel. All members of the Honors Forum are invited to this small group session to speak with the panelists about two readings that will be available prior to the panel date.
Shades of Gray
[ Dec. 3,4,5, 2002]
Shades of Gray is a series of events that provide a campus dialogue for discussing the question: “Do we live in an ethical culture?” The events will include a viewing of several episodes from popular television sitcoms, a faculty panel and a student discussion. Everything from Art and Literature to Enron to the possible war on Iraq is up for grabs. Bring your opinions and your voice! These events are sponsored by the Honors Forum, Liberal Studies and ProArts.
