Raising the bar

Following one of the most successful years ever for Skidmore sports, the Thoroughbred fall athletes have kicked-off the 2012-13 campaign. Full results of their first weekend of competition can be found here.

Upcoming home games for fall teams include: field hockey, Sept. 8 at 1 p.m. against New Paltz on Thoroughbred Field; women's soccer on Sept. 8 at 1 p.m. against Farmingdale on Wachenheim Field; golf on Sept. 8 at 9 a.m. with the Tim Brown Invitational at the Saratoga Spa State Park; men's soccer Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. vs. Bard on Wachenheim Field; and volleyball on Sept. 28 against Bard at 4 p.m. and Clarkson at 8 p.m. at the Williamson Sports Center.

Skidmore won seven Liberty League championships in 2011-12. A program record nine teams qualified for National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III tournament play and the riding team competed in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association national show.

The Thoroughbreds finished 36th in the 2011-12 NCAA Division III Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings.  Skidmore compiled 409.5 points, first in the Liberty League. The final standings included 318 schools.

The on-field success was matched in the classroom with 100 Thoroughbred athletes earning a 3.67 or higher during the spring 2012 semester.

"I am proud that our student-athletes continue to raise the bar both academically and athletically," said Gail Cummings-Danson, Skidmore athletics director.  "As they continue to challenge themselves, they provide proof that outstanding academic and athletic achievements go hand in hand.”

Defending Liberty League titles in 2012-13 will be volleyball, field hockey, men's and women's tennis, men's basketball, golf, and baseball.
