2004 scholarship winners, clockwise from left: Erin Brody,
David Baker, Alyssa DeStefano, and Irene Gilb
On Saturday, October 30, 2004, the winners of the 23rd annual Filene
Scholarship Competition performed in concert at Filene Recital Hall.
David Baker, tenor (West Hartford, Conn.), sang pieces by Ralph Vaughan Williams, W.A.
Mozart, and Robert Schumann; Erin Brody, flute (New Rochelle, N.Y.), performed Cantabile et
Presto by Georges Enesco; Alyssa DeStefano, viola (Glassboro, N.J.), played the
Arpeggione Sonata by Franz Schubert; and Irene Gilb, piano (Sanbornton, N.H.), performed
the Concerto No. 3 in C minor Op. 37 by Ludwig Van Beethoven.
The Lincoln and Therese Filene Foundation established the scholarships
to provide gifted young musicians the opportunity to further their
musical studies and develop their talents as part of a liberal-arts
education. Winners are selected through a performance competition
open to high school seniors.
Filene Scholars need not major in music; however, they must continue
to develop their skills through private instruction in the Department
of Music each semester and participate in department ensembles each
semester as determined by the department chair.
