Study Abroad/Internships - Europe

Belgium - IES European Union

As the European Union continues to grow in size and influence, understanding it becomes key to understanding Europe and our world. Come and learn about the economic, political, social, and cultural issues that confront the European Union today.
Taught in English, the IES Abroad European Union Program gives you the chance to study Politics, Economics, Business, and International Relations like you never have before.

The program features an integrative seminar that incorporates approximately 21 days of field study to travel to numerous countries inside and outside of the EU. As you visit each new country, you develop your understanding of the European Union, its history, and its institutions.

Internship in Freiburg.  Internships are conducted in German. Placements have included:

  • Business – Work at a small- to medium-sized business such as Ormed or SpielPlanVier, and assist with business campaigns and updating public relations information.
  • Government & Politics – Assist with the preparation of political campaign materials, flyers, and PR information for organizations such as the SPD, Bündnis 90/die Grünen, and Freiburg City Council's Foreigner Advisory Committee.
  • Non-Governmental Organizations – Work at a local NGO such as FESA (an agency for solar energy) and provide support for marketing campaigns and various events.
England - Skidmore in London
  • Choice of enrollment at one of seven outstanding schools in London
  • Cultural reimbursement program for all participants
  • Internship opportunities available through Westminster University

France - Skidmore in Paris

Internships are available in a variety of fields for students with appropriate qualifications and experience. Skidmore interns have been placed in areas such as anthropology, banking, education, psychology, theater, television, and studio art. Year long students will find a wider range of internship possibilities than those joining us for only one semester.

Germany Study & Internship Program (SIP) in Germany

UAS7, in cooperation with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), would like to invite you to apply for this unique educational experience involving one semester of study at one of our universities, followed by a six-month internship in a company or research institute in Germany. This is an excellent opportunity to put Germany on your resume: In-depth international study as well as internship experience! You will study for a full semester together with German and international students at one of Germany's leading universities of applied sciences. You will have the opportunity to apply your academic and professional skills in a five to six months hands-on supervised internship in Germany.

Italy - Trinity College in Rome

The Rome Campus offers a broad liberal-arts curriculum with courses for majors in art history, classics, economics, English, history, Italian,  and political science. Whatever your major, you will come to know Italy's treasures, thanks to the availability of courses at your level in art history and Italian, as well as academic excursions to Venice, Florence, and Naples/Pompeii/Capri for all students. Field seminars and engaging internships foster quality immersion. All courses are rooted in Rome.

Ireland - Boston University – Dublin Internship Program

Politics/International Relations
Work with an NGO, the press, humanitarian organizations, or a political party. Past internship placements have included the Institute of European Affairs, Fine Gael, Amnesty International, the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, the Department of Foreign Affairs, and Fianna Fáil.

Spain - Skidmore in Alcala
Internship with the PSOE

  • Researching and comparing the political campaigns in Spain and the United States
  • Working with the assessor of the party, analyzing the different motions that the party brings, which are passed or rejected and why
  • Working with the media and the interactions between them and the parties

Internship at a Feminist Organization

  • "Vindicación Feminista" is a Publishing Co. Editorial, and Feminist organization. It publishes books, magazines, and pamphlets on all feminist movements. Lidia Falcón, founder and president of the Feminist Party of Spain, has her private office at the center, therefore we also work with political issues. The internship duties include research for books and magazines presently being written, and translations into English of letters and pamphlets distributed throughout the European Union. This internship is highly recommended to anyone interested in the Women's Movement and/or politics. The research is interesting and Lidia is an incredible feminist, politician, and woman
Internship at a Spanish Government Agency
  • Work in the international department of IMADE (Instituto Madrileño de Desarrollo Económico):
  • Read and summarize the economic situations of countries around the world.
  • Write faxes, memorandums and letters to businesses.
  • Update and create company profiles.
  • Make telephone calls to companies concerning business deals.
  • Observe business meetings and lectures.
  • Assist in the organization of conferences and business meetings.
  • Investigative research to update economic statistics and to encounter information to help Spanish companies.
  • Analyze data and respond to the faxes and questions of companies.
  • Translate from English to Spanish and vice-versa.
Internship in a Social Movement Organization
  • The Spanish Commission for the Aid of Refugees (CEAR) is a Non Governmental Organization created in order to promote the solidarity of Spanish Society in favor of refugees in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner from Refugees (UNHCR), CEAR develops diverse programs for the legal and social protection of refugees in Spain, as well as creates projects for refugees in the third world. CEAR has free legal services that aid asylum seekers each year, and it also a social service that promotes the integration of refugees by providing educational and work assistance. The student will participate in the area of social service, by creating a resource guide for immigrants that will not only aid CEAR, but the Spanish government itself. The student's objective is to create a detailed guide of all the services that may benefit immigrants. In addition, the student will interview separate individuals and families that are currently receiving aid from CEAR (financial aid) and write updates of their progress, detailing whether or not, the aid is being used correctly. A summary of the person's situation is then handed in to the CEAR office for review

Switzerland - Boston University – Geneva Internship Program

International Relations

CAS PO/IR 444: The Activities of International Organizations (4) (Prerequisite: CAS IR 445.) The proliferation of both the number and types of international institutional arrangements has been accompanied by the development of specialized areas of international law: international criminal law, environmental law, and trade law, to name a few. Several types of institutional arrangements, both within and outside the UN system, are examined, as well as their normative, operational, and enforcement activities. Introductory lectures provide an overview of the substantive law relevant to the institution considered, thus building on the Introduction to International Law course. The role of non-state actors in their relations with international institutional arrangements is also considered. Teaching is by a combination of lectures, talks by specialists drawn from the various international institutions located in Geneva and to the greatest extent possible, visits to those institutions.

CAS PO/IR 455: Internship in International Organizations (International Relations) Students work with an NGO, humanitarian organizations, or inter-governmental organization. Past internship placements have included International Catholic Migration Committee, Centre of Applied Studies in Negotiations, and World Women Summit Federation. Students must submit a written portfolio or paper regrading their internship experience and receive an evaluation from their internship supervisor.

European Union - SIT Samoa: Pacific Communities and Social Change

Through interdisciplinary coursework, field study, and independent research, students explore processes of change in Samoa and other Pacific communities. Students consider the impact of new and different values on Pacific Island communities and social structures in light of development and globalization pressures.
